I have to say this was a great idea. Ive built one using the LMI tube they sell. Packed 2 boxes worth of aluminum foil in drilled the center ,which was a pain if the foil was loose but after the heater was put in I used 1000 degree silicone automotive gasket material to seal it up. Also used my temp probe from my multimeter to get temp reading .I used an old variac to adjust the temp and found 45 volts gave me 275 degrees,so there is room for more. I really dont know how long the heater will last but replacements are easy to buy, and cheap. great project.

Good job, I think I'll try making one. I've thought about getting or building a side bending jig, but I've also watched people bending on these irons and it's much more appealing to me to use the iron and it will take up a lot less room in my shop. Thanks for sharing!

They are used on stamping machines where the die must be heated to stamp a shape into the raw material.

I've made one but have currently gone through 2 cartridges. Have you had a problem with yours going out? I'm thinking it's just over heating but I could be wrong

    Hello.
That is a great bending iron!!
I am in the process of making my own bending iron and am thinking of a setup that's almost exactly like yours.
Could you please tell me how I could email/message you so i could get some much needed advice for a couple of details.
    Thanks.

Hi Chris. I know this is an old video but I found it informative in my quest for a side bender. Since its been a while since you've made it I wondered if you would have any ideas in which you would incorporate if you were to build another one. Just looking for any tips you've learned since the development of this one. Love your channel, thanks for what you do for us inspired to take on the humbling task of lutherie..

Unfortunately, this idea didn't work as well as I had thought it would. The heating element didn't last very long. I suspect it had something to do with how much electricity I was feeding it. If I were to make another one, I would incorporate a way to control the power going into the element.

@@HighlineGuitars Thankss for your reply! In the video you talked about using a router variable frequency drive. Did that not work to control the temp cartridge output?

@@dpdupuis5 I seem to remember a fuse in the controller blew. Also, packing the tube with aluminum foil seemed like a good idea, but there were still tiny voids that may have caused the element to heat unevenly, which I am told will cause the element to burn out. It's been a while and I've since moved on to heated silicon blankets. I left this video up for others who might be inspired by the idea and know a better way to pull it off.

Thanks for sharing this, I hope to be making one of these soon so I can get to work building my first ukulele. I like the idea of "free-form" bending as I'm limited with space and don't care for a lot of different size side bending jigs taking up my shop. Is this iron still working for you and have you made any improvements to speak of? Thanks!

Hi, can the heating cartridge be used as is, to bend very small strips of wood for jewelry for example? And can I ask you to better explain the crimping washer and how it is fastened to the pipe. Thanks for posting this video by the way.

These days I'm using an iPhone attached to a tripod with a clamp from a selfie stick. Works great and I can shoot in 1080p @ 60fps. For a mic, I'm using a lavalier mic that plugs into the headphone jack on my iPhone. I also bought a couple of cheap shop lights and fitted one with a 60 watt LED bulb and the other with a 100 watt LED.

i see that this is quite an old entry at this point, but these bending irons are made using a 60 watt light bulb as the heat supply, with a stainless steel (or i suppose it could be other metals) tube as the conduit. i was surprised to learn how easy they are to construct. ruclips.net/video/-py9FGKpYW0/видео.html this link shows how Pablo made his first one.
I'm a huge fan, Chris! thanks for all you post. I find all of your content to be very helpful!

To save wasted time. The original poster of this video failed with blown heater issues and went on to use blankets!
Trawl through the posts below to find out. He could do us all a favour and take this video off.

I would rather get 300w and wait little bit more time to get warm instead of getting the 500w and worry about over heat

I bought a cartridge heater and it arrived today. Does it matter which wire goes to positive and which to negative?
Mines a 220volt 400 watt one to suit my area and I got one of these to control the temp www.ebay.com/itm/131164014407
