  • In Ontario, it's going to be a lot harder to buy alcohol in the province over the next couple of weeks.
Thousands of workers with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario ( LCBO) went on strike Friday.
The issue at the centre of the job action? Premier Doug Ford's ambitious plans to make alcohol more accessible throughout Ontario.
This is a goal employees say could put their jobs under threat. Mackenzie Gray explains.

The LCBO does not control tobacco, cannabis, etc, so shut the LCBO down and let retailers get a license to sell.

The strike is just going to force people to go to supermarkets and once they leave they will never come back. I will never understand why hard liquor must be sold by government owned stores in the first place. Here in Florida, I can get alcohol everywhere. And the liquor store most of the time is right next to the supermarket or a beer barn. I can buy all the alcohol I need without driving around from place to place. Hell, some places even have a drive thru as well.

It's not the Union's job (OPSEU) to tell the management i.e. LCBO owners, how they are to run their business.
Sadly, these union members are an analog watch in a digital world. They are trying to roll back the clock to a point in time when only the LCBO had the monopoly on alcohol distribution and sales, and their members would have 100% job security.
If the province decides that they can collect the same amount of revenues without actually running the retail operations directly i.e. privatization, these employees should start retraining for a different line of work. The current wages, benefits and pay they are getting would never be paid by any private sector business for such a low and unskilled job.
    🤔🤔🤔

I heard the government, Ontario, will actually make less money going private and that means less money for our hospitals, schools, roads, etc. The Ford government actually put it in their report on the whole thing, it's something like $200-225 million a year lost by going private. Which means much less for Ontario infrastructure. But I guess time will tell.

LCBO is the 2nd biggest buyer in the world but what they brought in were pretty garbage. For instance, 2019 Burgundy, a great vintage but only saw 1 selection. 2006 Sauternes, tried 2 different producers and they all past peak. Sweet wines? even Calgary has better selection than LCBO. Now they want the profits from ready to go products? LCBO needs to accept market competition and what other countries are doing. Not only that, Niagara Winery can't export the good stuff all thanks to LCBO. Because of that, it became a laughing stock. LCBO needs a major restructuring from top to bottom in all operations. This strike isn't so convincing at all. However it creates an opportunity for small breweries and wineries to fill in the void.

In British Columbia, the competition between public-owned and private liquor stores is indeed unique. The public-owned stores, operated by the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB), often benefit from government subsidies, which can allow them to offer lower prices compared to private stores. This has sparked debates about fairness and market dynamics. From a progressive perspective, public ownership can ensure that profits are reinvested into public services rather than private pockets. It also allows for better regulation and control over alcohol sales, potentially leading to more responsible consumption practices. However, it's essential to strike a balance that supports small businesses and prevents market monopolies. What are your thoughts on the balance between public benefit and fair competition in this context?
