I've been listening to "Don't Shoot Me..." a lot lately. Granted, I never gave it its due either coming after "Madman" and "Honky Chateau" but it really is brilliant. I mean, "Have Mercy On The Criminal" is amazing! Ditto "High Flying Bird". Some of Bernie Taupin's best lyrics too. That said, I also think it's one of Elton's worst sounding recordings unfortunately. I've never heard a decent vinyl copy. Thin, sibilant...I guess the mastering on this record fell by the wayside.
It was a number one album for 4 weeks. It’s considered one of his classic albums released between 1970-1976. I never thought of it as underrated. It was actually the album where he began to transition to more of a pop sound.
Always one of my favorite Elton John songs. My first time seeing a live version. I love the faster pace here and the added guitar solo by Davey Johnstone is awesome.
"The album's title came from an incident with legendary comedian Groucho Marx. Elton was playing the piano at a party at Groucho's home; Groucho, after an evening of constant ribbing (he referred to Elton John as 'John Elton'), held out his middle and index finger in the style of a pistol, pointed at John. John then raised his hands and said "Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player" at Marx's gun imitation." Wikipedia
There are two stories behind the album’s unusual title: one says that the phrase was on a plaque that Bernie had found in an American junk store, inspiring Elton to name his sixth studio album. The other is that it is a derivation of the 1960 François Truffaut film “Shoot The Piano Player” and was inspired by a comic moment Elton had with his new friend Groucho Marx.
Sara Martínez García Dee Murray was the best around. The soul of the band. Great singer too. His first wife has released a clip of him singing lead in 1983. Brilliant!! Search Dee Murray and you will find it. There was none better than the original band.
"Don''t Shoot Me! I'm only the Piano Player" is one of the greatest Elton John albums, and the story behind the title is very interesting, if you should care to research it.
@t This is one of the greatest albums Sir Elton did. see the summary at wikipedia, they did the whole album at strawberry studio. The end product was a list of fantastic songs. especially "texan love song" and "Teacher I Need You"
Nice to see the lotto numbers at the end. I swear this gets faster and faster as the song goes on but oh well... The nasally affected voice probably answers why.
The whole shoot me album is underrated.
This album is always considered to be one of the greatest of Elton
It seems underrated because we were born after 70s
awaiting yours

I loved Elton in the 80s.
Eu o amo hoje e o amarei até o dia de minha morte, em 2100.

Gotta love those '80s headless basses and guitars.
I love this song since I have heard. Very Well.
This song was my actual introduction to Elton John due to my older brother having a copy of the album.
A lot of people had this album it's one of his best
I love this song and great seeing this clip! He didn't play this song live very often.
Hard to beat Elton, Davey, Dee, Nigel and Bernie’s lyrics.
Indeed

0:16 I love the little mock American accent there. Great song and performance by Elton, if just a tad bit faster than the album version.
Amazing
Magnífico, sublime, um verdadeiro show de genialidade de Sir Elton John.

I have seen Elton 12 times. when he plays the upbeat songs his tempo gets way too fast.
This is rock n roll. It should be played loud and fast live.
