Steelers' Russell Wilson, Justin Fields Cause for Chaos or Hope at Quarterback? | Back to the 90s?

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback room with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields brings hope to some, but is it a preset for chaos? Chris Carter approaches that question with Jim Wexell, who covered the Steelers when they were searching for the next franchise quarterback in the 1990s and saw the rapid changes under Bill Cowher. Are Wilson and Fields better for the Steelers than the days of Kordell Stewart, Mike Tomczak and Jim Miller?
    Also, Chris gets Jim's insights on the NFL Draft, and which players he think the Steelers should prioritize for the first round. Could an offensive tackle that's drafted early still begin the season on the bench behind Dan Moore?

    I don’t think either Wilson or Fields could’ve asked for a better situation to be in and I don’t think the team could’ve landed a better duo to take them to the next level.

      Fair comment. If Fields is willing to be Geno Smith for a few years, he will benefit big time. If fans and media don’t let Russ don his surgery, the patient (i.e., the Steelers) will die. In Denver, Russ had almost no surgical instruments. Geno needs to be the intern that he is…sit, observe, learn, and be ready when his time comes. He will be better off if he just waits 3-4 years. The bag will be there.

    I'm more excited about this QB situation than I have been in a long time for the Steelers. Maybe I'm just delusional. But one thing that I keep thinking about chaos or competition in the QB room... Isn't every year, every practice every game a QB competition? For every team? Maybe not every game but certainly every training camp. But no one is saying that. No talks about that.
    To me, in the NFL no one gets to rest on their laurels. There is always someone waiting to take your spot.

    If last year's team got 26 passing TDs they would've won the division and the number 1 seed. That Cards, Patriots, Colts stretch was brutal.

    Cooper DeJean is the only player I would take other than a tackle with the first pick. Dejean reminds me of Rod Woodson consideration ... as DeJean is arguably the best athlete in this draft and could possibly slide to the Steelers #20 pick. Then move up in slightly in the 2nd and take C or tackle and seek to find the other in FA after draft. Use the two 3rd picks to go after WR & DL would be ideal.

      @@thee1melvin I wasn't comparing DeJean's athletic ability to Woodson. I was comparing the Steelers situation given the possibilty of DeJean sliding in the draft (like Woodson) to where the Steelers could land one of the more talented and versatile players in this draft. Make no mistake ...there's only 1 Rod Woodson.

    I want wilson for this year and Fields for next year/future. Longest wilson can stay is 2 years. Future should be fields. We have to give him a chance. If wilson wins super bowl which Steelers should compete for. Great. Still extra 1 year deal or let walk and let fields play. Let him learn this year and be ready to go next year.

  • @SteelCurtain_90
    @SteelCurtain_90 Месяц назад +1

    Russell Wilson or Justing Fields will obviously be dependent on the protection. I think neither will have success without a much-improved O-line from 2023 squad. If the running game meets team goal of getting firmly established. That may open the passing game to contribute some down field plays. Not to sound negative... but a balanced offense that actually produces would be a nice change of pace that's been absent for a long while. Thank you, Chris for emphasizing what has to be the priority in turning this team around. Keep up the great work.

      Lol clueless. If the line isn’t improved, then high it will be duh 🙄
      They are both mobile QB’s and the threat along with a solid run game is enough when void of protection.
      All you fans who want to keep
      On with the negativity when they haven’t even put on literal uniforms yet is crazy.
      The exact same fans who were optimistic about Rudolph and Pickett 😂😂😂😂😂😂
      A recent first round pick and a Super Bowl QB get more flack than a bust and a never been hmm 🤔 wonder what’s the difference 🙄🤐

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican Месяц назад

      Russ is superior to Fields at playing with bad or average protection, and that would be the case no matter which of Russ’s ages you used for comparison.
      Russ ranked 9th in mitigating negative plays, right behind Mahomes by a difference of just 0.12%, and Stroud by a difference of 0.15%
      Curiously, Russ was a notch above Kenny Pickett (by 0.16%), so people who claim Pickett sucks might want to rethink that.
      Russ also out-ranked Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Baker Mayfield, Jordan Live, Tua Tagovailoa, and Brock Purdy, all names people would strangely have guessed to be above Russ!
      Fields ranked 27th!

    The QB situation will come down to which one fits and handles Smith's offense better. With all of the WR 2 talk? The significance of TE usage in this scheme is lacking focus. Will Wilsom function effectively in that regard? Neither was tremendous in middle of the field situations, but Fields had some decent usage with Kmet in Chicago.
    Also, getting lost in QB/WR hype? Is the salary cap implications beyond this season. Trade options and either QB next year would put them in a precarious cap position in 25.
    Dan Moore, barring injury, is the starter week one, regardless of who they draft. The best case? Is an early/mid-season switch similar to last year.
    It's fairly safe to assume Moore is coming in at his best thus far. It's his contract season.
    Imagine paying a WR like Aiyuk, 30 mil at QB, another 20 mil or better at LT in 25. Then, look at the additional 25 FA's.
    OT, WR, C, and DL are must haves in this draft.

    I just don’t see than staying at 20. I see them trading down for another 2nd round pick or even up in the first round and then trading back down again for even more picks. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    If they stay with their 1st 3 selections, it’s going to be extremely difficult to land what they need.
