This was from the greatest concert in the history of rock and roll. One hell of a way to spend a Thanksgiving in the City.
If you haven't seen the Last Waltz, you need to watch it a few times. And turn it up LOUD.

It was for sure incredible, but I wouldn't put it that high up. I've seen shows that were one act at their very best for 3 hours plus just blowing an entire audience away non-stop. This one had some acts doing short sets that weren't all what most fans wanna hear. Plus, stuff like the No Nukes concerts were phenomenal too.

I was there the night that Phish played their first Halloween “costume” show by covering the Beatles White album from start to finish as the second of three sets of music that night. So I absolutely agree that there have been more amazing concerts experiences better than the Band that Thanksgiving night in the City. I’d be willing to bet half of all of those were either Dead or Phish shows.

Van plays saxophone, guitar and harmonica, guys. This guy has released nearly fifty studio albums, plus a few live albums, as well. His original band, Them, was part of the British Invasion ( though they are Irish). This is the legendary Canadian/American band, The Band, playing with him here.

This was Van paying homage to ‘The Band’ in their final performance, The Last Waltz filmed by their biggest fan Martin Scorsese. The list of performers on this bill was incredible. Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Young, and a lot more. R.I.P. Mr. Levon Helm. The best frontman who is also a dynamic drummer. ❤

Yes that guitarist is Robbie Robertson aka one of the principle songwriters of "The Band." This is from their Last Waltz show which was their supposed final show where they hosted a thanksgiving dinner and show at the Winterland in San Francisco, where they brought out all their friends (Van included) to play songs with them. The show was turned into a concert film/documentary directed by Martin Scorcese. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Waltz

The lead guitar is Robbie Robertson. One hell of a song writer. “The Band” is backing Morrison. They were Bob Dylan’s band. The drummer, Levon Helm, was dying of cancer. Hence the name The Last Waltz.

Facts. Van Morrison is referred to as "The Belfast Cowboy". If you only know Gloria and Brown Eyed Girl you haven't scratched the surface. Get the album Moondance one of his early works. If you listen to any classic rock station then I'm sure you've heard the songs Moondance, Tupelo Honey, Into the Mystic, Wild Nights, and this song which is off the Moondance album. The performance here is from a concert called the Last Waltz filmed and made into a movie of the same name by Martin Scorsese. It was the last live performance by a group known simply as "The Band" that started as Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. They toured in the mid-sixties as Bob Dylan's backup band. So this is not Morrison's backup band. The band toured constantly (they played at Woodstock in 69) from the mid sixties till this final show in '78. Because the band was so well known (The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and a dozen studio albums) everyone showed up for this concert. Dylan, Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Dr John, Neil Diamond, Muddy Waters and Ronnie Hawkins. And amazingly it was all captured live on film by Scorsese who had a nightmare trying to film a 3 hour live performance on "film" not digital video. But he came through and produced a film by the same name (The Last Waltz). Google all this stuff to find out about the show and the movie. BTW I saw them live 3 times, once in 78 when they toured for the final time with Dylan out front. Check out the album "Before The Flood" which was recorded on this Dylan/The Band final tour.

This song is off the album Moondance, which is probably Van's most famous album. Funny you mention Neil Diamond and Bruce Springsteen. Early in his career Springsteen was sometimes accused of sounding a bit too much like Van Morrison, which imo isn't really fair since Van himself takes so much from others, especially Ray Charles and Solomon Burke. And Bruce really already had his own voice even if Van was a big influence on him. Also Neil Diamond also performed at this same concert. You should really watch the whole concert, which is called the Last Waltz, which btw was directed by Martin Scorsese. The lead guitarist of The Band to this day works with Scorsese on the music for his films. They started to become good friends back in the 70s. Scorsese has always been a great filmmaker when it comes to music. The film is one of the most important music docs ever made.

Terrific reaction. This performance from this legendary concert is wonderful, but I like the one from his "It's Too Late to Stop Now" concert is even better. That was with is band The Caledonia Orchestra, including a string section, and it'll blow you away.

That "guy", the guitarist is Robbie Robertson lead guitarist of the Band This was their last concert as a group recorded on Thanksgiving Winterland 1976.
They wanted to invite a group of their friends to celebrate and sing them out.
Include Van Morrison obviously a great singer and song. He is Irish and began in mid sixties as lead singer with a group Them. They had a big hit with Gloria and a couple of others hẹ left to go solo. He was successful. He met the Band when they all lived in Woodstock

Let's get this straight. Van Morrison was the front man for the group from Belfast, Ireland called Them. They had the hit called Gloria. This clip is Van Morrison live with the group The Band backing him up. Robby Robertson is the man you probably recognize. RIP Robby .Levon Helm is the genius on drums for The Band. I do not know how you can throw Neil Diamond into the mix here. Neil Diamond is pure pop. This is one of the most dynamic performanced Van ever did live!

The guitar player is Robbie Robertson, original founder of "The Band", along with drummer Levon Helm. Van Morrison is British, and started with the Rock group "Them" in 1965, and they had a huge hit called "Gloria." Van must be in his mid 70s at least.

The guitar player is Robbie Robertson. The band is not his band, it’s The Band (named for the fact they were Bob Dylan’s band). This concert was their last gig. Van was one of many guests to join the party which also included Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jonie Mitchell... a cast of rock royalty.
Now move up to 2008 and check the Hollywood Bowl gig......

Well many say astral weeks is his greatest. It isn't.Poetic champions (not his best but pretty damned good) is much better.Van Morrison grew as a songwriter exponentially.Veedon Fleece
Is an absolute masterpiece an album of beauty and wonder.Common One is a work of genius and too late to stop now is arguably the greatest live album ever.

His best album is Astral Weeks, and the best track on it is Madame George. Utterly beautiful. Not very easy to describe though. If you check out Bruce Springsteen on the BBC's Desert Island Discs radio show (in the UK) you'll find he chose Madame George as one of his favourite 8 tracks. Van does not reciprocate. But he has made a whole heap of fantastic music. Someone's mentioned It's Too Late To Stop Now - arguably the best ever live album.

That the Band playing with him. Like the band, The Band. Great job, if you've never seen or heard this version of Caravan you are in for a shock. They have the full version of this song being performed here but its not on the Martin Scorcesse remastered dvd (the one seen here), its available on the cd from the concert though. Its called The Last Waltz, it was The Band's last farewell show to touring and they had a ton of artist there playing with them.
ETA: The Band as in "take a load off Fannie, take a load for free" those guys 😂. But the 70s everyone was so young looking its hard to tell today.

As others explained already: this was taken from the 'Last Waltz Concert' by The Band who famously recorded with Bob Dylan, most of their members were Canadian.
