Your friend is correct. Sg govt imposes a 'sin tax' on alcohol and cigarettes. This is to discourage unhealthy lifestyle choices that might lead to costly medical conditions when one gets older. This is just one of the many strategies that the govt employs to nudge residents towards a healthier lifestyle, so as to reduce the burden on the healthcare system. Considering the ageing population of Sg, it is understandable that the govt wants to prevent a large and sickly population. One way to understand this is, if one wants to drink or smoke, one just pays for the choices one makes. Why should tax payers fund a costly healthcare system that results from other people's choosing an unhealthy lifestyle?
