See, this is why Al is one of the best. If he doesn't know something, he is honest about it amd will tell you. He's not like 90% of the guys that just make up some shit to sound smart and cause you to have problems with your build for listening. I literally took his advice to call and talk to Haltech about my particular build and based off everything I need, I am getting the basic 550 with universal harness. They do not make a plug n play for my setup but he said that they will even help me with a remote start up base tune and even is helping find me a tuner in my area. I habe a megasquirt on my Camaro and only wish I had this kind of help when I was doing that mess.
It comes from a long career, of fixing and modifying past stupidity handed to him to film how to fix and modify!!! Al sounds like I AM after 40yrs of my trade life!!!
Have to agree with you a Al, haltech support is second to none and their looms and supplied diagrams make wiring a lot less daunting for those that don't make looms everyday. Anyone you speak to is super nice and very knowledgeable and make trouble shooting short work. Thanks Fernando, scotty and dave. Legends!
People that actually enjoy wiring are a rare breed. I am lucky enough to have my dad who enjoys wiring and electronics to help me when I need it. Currently he is showing me some basics on wiring with his 4AGE offroader and will be showing me how to build a megasquirt when he gets around to replacing his Porsche 928 ecu.
Thats looking nice and clean, no reason to hide quality work. I used a MegaSquirt controller for my 95 Dodge Dakota with 5.9 magnum series engine (was 3.9). Actually soldered the entire ECU myself and was able to configure for all my (not LS) sensors. I was also able to configure sequential injection and spark, using LS1 coils salvaged from a paying job. You always can find a few goodies when eating engines from a salvage yard. Able to work out overdrive and lock up on trans as well as AC. The ECU fit my budget and is basically universal for any application, good support from DIYAUTO (dealer) and the forums. Used my brain and read a lot before purchasing. Now working on the new engine and dash harnesses when I can. Great content, I’m sure having to film everything is a pain sometimes but we appreciate it.
I spent over 30 years doing vehicle wiring for public safety/radio/computer/siren/lighting systems. I have also been an electronics instructor. I appreciate this very helpful video.
I loved wiring so much as a kid and it just made sense to me that I made a career out of it. I'm an automation engineer now and I design and build control panels for industrial automation at water plants. I run into so many different levels of wiring on a daily basis that I just love being able to come here and watch a fellow artist get their work on. Keep up the awesome work!
The no-bull assessment of ECUs and wiring. Have also had really good experiences with Haltech, even in pre-sales. Pulling apart OEM looms still sucks but people shouldn't be so scared of doing it. Love your work guys.
A tough part is making sure you’re using the right combinations of wires, terminals and seals. They tend to only really want a specific range of core and insulation size when you read their specs closely. You often need sort of specialist wire like 18ga txl with thin insulation that you just can’t get a your local auto parts suppliers. It really does all come down to careful planning though.
I always learn something new on each and every episode and new build. Keep up the good work guys. And Woody dont worry to much about getting al Al's knowledge into your brain. It will all come with time, and having Al teaching and showing you the right way. That is worth gold, that no book in the world can ever teach you. I enjoy the show guys, keep up the awesome content.
45 minutes of pure bliss 👌🏻👌🏻 love ya explanations on how you do stuff Al ! Woody don’t be a chooch! Don’t stop Al from going on his tangents ... that’s where half the gold is hidden , especially when he gets fired up at how dumb people can be 😝👌🏻
Cheers for the video gents. Used to do stereo wiring flat out 10 years ago, but preparing to do some stuff with a Link G4 and was getting a bit flustered at the thought after being out of touch for so long. You've settled me back down and talked me off the edge again 🤣

Another great video guy's, great helpful instructions with very detailed information, this will come in handy when wiring my lx torana. I'm quite capable with most wiring jobs in the car, but the thought of doing the whole thing from scratch had me reaching the for the whiskey and valium, but I feel I can tackle it head on now. Cheers again guy's..
until recently i had not done any full wire in looms before, im a qualified Diesel mechanic and have done some wiring of accessories and a such for electronic brake controllers at work, recently a friend paid for a pommy guy to make a loom for his super charged ncp13 echo with a maxxecu sport, he got the loom and it was more then average, feeling like ive got enough knowledge i put my hand up to fix it, i fully re-wired his flying loom whilst doing a proper concentric twist and heat shrinking it with proper heat shrink breakout boots, i even changed the wiring for sequential injection because the previous people wired it as batch style and then terminated it pulled it in and adjusted the ecu setup to reflect my wiring loaded a base map and turned the key and boom she fucking fired first go never felt so bloody proud in my fucking life and its from watching you guys do the work and actually listening instead of arguing in the comments that gave me the gonads to get it done, total time spent on loom, 8 hours, 15 minutes initialising the ecu and loading turn after firmware update, once again thank you so much for the information and giving me the drive to do it myself now i have friends lining up for my work because they where so impressed of my quality of work
Thanks for that very informative guide guys iv got to do this with the factory engine loom and was far from looking forward to it but you have made it less daunting thanks and keep up the great videos and the great work.
Theres probably 3 days in both engine and ECU. Reduce the ecu spec and cylinder count and it gets faster. Maybe 5 hours uninterrupted for a simple 4 cylinder. But you still have to make connections to the vehicle which is also time consuming.
Another great video. Wiring and programming is Fun. Like Al said "very rewarding" If you wire it yourself then fault finding is an easier task. Great show guys. All the best.
They are a good bit of gear, I have one in my RX2 boot for the fuel setup. I have another to fix the jacked up ignition wiring. If you are fussy, you could just put in better quality relays.
Keen for a pretty in-depth on the trans wiring. It's the only part I haven't wired as I've never messed with trans wiring but would like full functionality
I did a full custom harness with my elite 750, they couldn't have made it easier, can't recommend them enough. I emailed them for support, always got exactly the answers I was looking for and alot more info that I didn't know I needed lol. Next time I will get the 1500 so I get knock control
i did it for my barra swapped xw and stripped back the original loom and figured out what wire went where and cut out wires i didnt need. one wire at a time seemed to help me with not being over whelmed by it
Awesome. I never really liked wiring, but its the stuff that i have to work out relays and fuses, not so much cutting and connecting wires. Have gotten better at it over the years and reasonably confident at wiring an ecu as long as i can work out whats needed for where. Having an au that needs an aftermarket ecu I'd really prefer something mostly plug in but thats not looking likely.
always hated wiring until i realized i hated dealing with other peoples attempts at wiring i had to fix or dealing with looms and not wanting to dig into it to much due to a lack of confidence but having it opened up and traceable or even labelled like with a lot of new harnesses makes it so much easier for sure
Couldn't agree more on the spread out boxes mentality. There's a reason newer cars are chock full of coprocessors and modules all linked together with can and such. It leads to a super modular and flexible system! Crazy people are spooked by it.
Great video guys 😊 Wiring isn't scary so long as you are logical in your approach to it. One thing to add with connectors is that you also need to check the current rating of the connector itself. Fine for most of the engine stuff but especially for fans and fuel pumps the 15-20amps will need a larger rated connector or you'll melt the connector. Seen that a good few times 😉
My absolute favorite was the "woods screws" part when mounting the ECU lol! Just picked up a s13 1jz project and the previous owner used sheet metal screws to secure the shift boot 😑
I don't mind wiring, but where to get wiring & connectors is definitely one thing that holds me back from likes of going EFi & other wiring projects, Now off to make a cuppa blend 43
Probably worth noting for the home gamers that, if you aren't so confident in your mental road map, you can use masking tape instead of leccy tape and cable ties and write on each point what you're doing with that branch or where it lies.
Great vid, just finished my loom a few months ago. Audi 2.7 bi-turbo with an lpg ecu added. You mention 99% but no Alternator exciter wire. (Sorry i'm that chootch ). Yeh this as far as car content of actual work is leaving MCM for dead these days not that the two channels were every 100% comparable.
To be truthful, we watched a video on MCM about painting your wiper arms blaaaaaaack.
They aren't SUPPOSED to be the same thing.
MCM is the gateway drug to get the newbies hooked. The Skid Factory is where you go once MCM no longer gives you quite the buzz it once did.
