  • ‪@SaturdayNightLive‬ recently made a joke about a "schizophrenic man with a service dog"... Given the recent article by ‪@USATODAY‬, it's easy to see how this may be them making a joke about me.
In this video I talk more about how I felt about the joke, and why I think some of my fellow advocates may have been frustrated by it. However, as a comedian myself, I had to give a response.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

The direction I'd have gone was something like, "A man diagnosed with schizophrenia has been given a support dog that can help him determine what is real and what is a halucination. So far the results have been promsing and they're now looking to see if they can make this service available to US policy makers".

As the parent of someone with schizophrenia I agree with you, it’s funny but also, wish they would have advocated a bit.

SNL makes lots of jabs at mental health disorders & issues. I prefer it when they have people with the disorders in on it- eg. Pete Davidson parodying the song “I’m just Ken”- & in his parody he sings about being mentally ill, & on drugs. It’s funny because he’s making fun of himself, & he’s in on his own joke. They also did the skit well - production wise, lyrically etc.
I agree with you that they can work on educating & angling things. Imagine if they had reached out to you to have you in on a skit for it, & involved you in the process, & let you also advocate in the skit.

I agree and your dog is cute! People get sensitive over the littlest things. It would of been super cool if they had featured you.

The beauty about that SNL skit is that it makes people understand what it’s like to have schizophrenia.
The majority of people think schizophrenia only involves hearing voices. Now they know that it can involve visual hallucinations.

A lot of us cope with humor. Likewise, more upset they didn't mention the article or that you do advocate and do comedy yourself. It would be nice to see more about ppl with psychotic disorders that can manage it and live proactively rather than the medias extensive coverage of those involved in acts of violence. I think they avoided the mention of you on legal reasons tho. They hadn't known how you'd react or had your permission to use pics or info all of which could lead to lawsuit in some cases. SNL thrives on dark humor and there's a lot to be found in mental health. I'm totally agreed you can raise awareness and educate with comedy. It'd be cool if they came across this and contacted you about a mention. You've brought awareness to alot more than that one headline.

As long as Humor comes from love and acceptance and done in good taste then it's fair game. As soon as it's come from hate and indifference then it's becomes entirely different. I have a healthy sense of humor and I'm a trans woman. My mother told me before I transitioned she worried about breast cancer. Shame if I wanted boobs so bad they killed me😂

    • @Nabium
      @Nabium 3 месяца назад +1

Better tell her the survival rate for breast cancer is slightly better than for testicular and prostate cancer. But still, wishing you a long breast cancer free life lol!

Schizophrenic jokes might always be apart of comedy because the idea of seeing or hearing something which isn't there is such a shock to imagine or comprehend for a lot of people. It's not as easy to make jokes about say a complex personality disorder or bipolar disorder. You can, but not many would get it. Schizofrenia is just easier to imagine for people, even if the image most people have of schizofrenia isn't always accurate.
But when I was a kid schizofrenia was constantly being confused with split personality(DID). I don't see that as much these days.
Keep doing your amazing work, Kody. And give Luna a pet from me if you ever see this.

I had to train myself how to identify what was real and fake with my skitzophrenia ,
Thats why with all of my friends i make i talk to them about my slitzophrenia and tell them a hand gesture to make if i ask something among the lines of "are they real" , if not they will gesture with thier left hand , and if they are real they will gesture with the opposite eventually the way i figured out my self is by studying the "invisies" reactions and actions to help determine what is real or not

This is fine. Personally, I hate telling ppl I have schizophrenia when the only reference they have is Jim Carey’s character from “Me, Myself and Irene”. That movie did some damage… but this is fine.

    Nowadays I just skip TWU...
Those 2 are mid (at best) delivering a joke, never give any credits, they laugh (LITERALLY ALL THE TIME!) at their own jokes and just trying to be as edgy and "non-politically correct" as they can be but just to force a laugh. Sarah Sherman for example, could be edgy or weird about something and everybody would laugh 'cause it's obvious that this is who she is. She wouldn't be fakin' it!
People cry about how the cast of SNL is not as funny as it used to be and nobody mention those 2 who are on air for almost half of the show time...
But yeah, you did a great job on how you took the joke and how you handled it in general

I guess it's a bit of a double-edged sword... Yes, the joke was sorta funny, but it really doesn't do anything for awareness. Like you said; joking about such a topic definitely needs some educating to counter the joke. Not doing this can feed stigma.
