      He definitely needs to be written like Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. Creepy, snarky, and doesn't really give a shit if people die from their own stupidity. The rich are monsters, and that fat pig of a curator was grooming that poor girl. He got what he deserved.

    I love how most of the horror of this story didn't come from supernatural monsters, but from human beings and the broken mind of the tour guide. Like this could have been another story where the characters run from scary monsters and that was it, but the author spun that classic story into something that felt so much more real and tangible. Plus, this guy's narration paints such a vivid picture in your mind I can fully remember seeing Mariette through her glass exhibit and that freaky fly thing moving through the halls. It's just like watching a movie but better in some ways

      idk it felt a bit forced imo, still really enjoyed the story, but the whole ''the worst evil of this world isnt the supernatural but the depravity of humans themselves'' message was forced, its like you literally become inhuman if youre rich enough, wich makes no sense, honestly how comically evil all the rich guys were, but the second a middle class girl appears she just wants to make the human sized fly into her ''equal'' it feels like a chapter from the comunist equivalent of the bible, were every rich guy is comically evil and every middle class person is beyond a saint

    Ngl, this is really fucking good writing. The ending, him essentially dancing with the most prominent of the museums other victims, him accepting his insanity, only for the museum to continue his torture by one single act, revoking Mariettes life and allowing her to be a perfect, plastic doll. Such a happy, happy ending.
    :)

    • @sergeysmirnov1062
      @sergeysmirnov1062 3 года назад +262

      Personally, I tend to believe that the museum didn't revoke Mariette's life out of cruelty, rather, it allowed her to become the doll she always wanted to be, letting her soul move on then as he finally fully accepted his position as the guide. It probably sensed that he didn't truly want to be the guide before, thus trapping the soul of the old one in case he would actually manage to flee. Only at the end, after he finally accepted his position could Mariette in turn be free.

I get paid by providing customers plumbing services that took a 5 year apprenticeship to learn. Everything from installing medical equipment in hospitals, to refinery mains and towers, to sinks and johns in some far off middle school. I didnt MAKE the pipe, fittings, glue, tools needed, fixtures, ect. No, other people made all that. I didnt design the blueprints. I didnt do any of the mechanical engineering. Now, using all of those things made by others, I can create a final product. Much like when a narrator reads a authors work. Both are needed for YOU to be entertained. Engineers like to think they know how to do my job but rarely can they step up and show us how its done. Everyone on a project is important for a successful outcome. The narrator went mad, I believe the majority of the final sequence was completely in his head. He murdered people needlessly on an imaginary crusade for freedom until he finally got through the metal door. In that last scene, he wasn’t dancing with Mariette, he was dancing alone in the aftermath of the bloodbath he created.

    My theory about the ending is that when he had laid down in the snow “to sleep”, he wasn’t saved, instead his body started going through the stages of death, and he essentially imagined the rest of the story as a comfort in his last moments. His brain wanted him to die after seeing his daughter, happy and free, alive and all grown up. He was able to kill his boss that he hated. What really made me think that towards the end was the final moments when he starts mentioning mariettes “color of cold lips” and the night sky spinning, it felt like the final steps before passing on. At the end when he pauses and goes “Mariette?” I imagined its when he sort of realized what was going on and that the dancing wasn’t real, the music wasn’t real, he was alone. and then the end. Just my interpretation. The entire story is so amazing, and the narration was exceptional as always.

    Man, this story is great. I listened to it earlier today but I can't get it out of my head completely. It's a simple premise that's wonderfully expanded upon by the author's creativity, it has a satisfying but open-ended finale (a rarity in short horror stories), and it answers the immediate questions in the reader's mind but leaves the larger questions up to interpretation (e.g. the immediate mystery was what's behind the door, but the larger mystery is who exactly runs this organization that owns the museum).

    Steel, plastic, glass, Mariette, Micheal, and Sophia. Mariette is supposedly plastic, her mind was warped and molded by Johnny RazorTongue like a piece of plastic, yet she is imprisoned in glass, and her mind remains the most steel-like of the three. She is unwavering. Which is ironic. Micheal, the narrator, describes as he goes to speak with Johnny Razortongue, that his mind has been hardened into steel by his 15 years as guide, and that Mariette did not have as hardened of a mind. Yet, we see Micheal's personality shattering like glass throughout the story, and then the pieces are reformed or molded like a literal piece of plastic, warped into conforming to the role of the museum's guide. Finally, Sophia. She is imprisoned behind a steel door. She does not break or buckle like Mariette or Micheal. She sees Micheal as the monster he has become, and unwavering in her morality, flees the museum.
    Perhaps Mariette kills Micheal at the end. His mind and personality are plastic, fake and easily reshaped. None of the other glass enclosures were shattered. He opened the front door, fled the museum, opened the warehouse, and in the process shattered like glass. He opened the steel door, met his daughter, and was remade. Finally, he opened the last lock, Mariette's unscathed glass enclosure, and I think this must poetically be where he meets his end. He led her to the atrium for their dance, shortly after announcing himself as the guide. She is a former or current employee of the curator, so perhaps she is the one that the curator had mentioned would terminate the contract. She consumed plastic, and he had become figuratively a piece of plastic in the final act: fake, malleable, deformed, and compliant.

      TLDR: Basically he is going crazy and wasn't dancing with anyone.

      I wondering the same. If he indeed go completely insane, I’m wondering at what point did he break.
      Did his daughter actually exist then?
      Really nice story! But the emphasis on “Mariette” at the end definitely confused d

      I am pretty sure the end was him saying her name because she stopped moving and be reanimated and he was questioning why and the reason is because her soul has finally moved on is what they say.

      I am in the same boat as you. I don’t really get it. I’m wondering if everything he saw after going through the door was an illusion. That would mean that there was no happy ending. That whatever is inside that door is messing with his mind.

    I wonder if mariette is his mother and the whole guide job is just one large line of people throughout the generations getting trapped here. That his daughter's cancer was fabricated for him to be desperate enough to be driven here

    A lot of people have given their theories on the ending of this rather gripping and well-written story, and I’d like to give mine;
    I believe that Marriette truly became a doll, and he realized that he was simply dancing with plastic. Until that point she had a soul, a part of her was being kept there, allowing her to be partially animated. However, once Mike (the guide) fully accepted his job and everything he had done, her soul was released, allowing her dream to come true (that being her wish to become a doll). Her soul finally moved on, and she was put to rest, her old body now 100% inanimate and plastic. But I’d love to hear other theories :) this was just my personal take.

    My favorite theory is that, at the end, Mariette's soul finally found peace and passed on, and the guide realized that her body had become stiff, solid plastic.
    It's a bittersweet ending to me, because on the one hand, Mariette no longer has to be imprisoned. But on the other hand, Mariette was the last person or display at the museum who he could communicate with and relate to. Without her, all he has left for company are heartless killing machines, both human and non-human.
    To me, that final "Mariette?" was the mild concern before burgeoning panic, like when a mother looks up and realizes her child is no longer on the playground. She calls her child's name for the first time, thinking that he will just answer and everything will be okay. For the guide, he calls Mariette's name after realizing she is no longer there, just before he realizes that he's going to be alone until the day he dies, which will probably be painful and horrific.
