You just taught me how to use an awl and insert safety eyes for the first time. I watched your video, followed your directions, and now I have two little black eyes on my stuffed bunny. I was very intimidated that I would ruin the animal I have been working on...but it went very smoothly. Thank you so much!
You all should be proud to know, my caffeine addicted shaking hands, successfully cut out a pattern Y'ALL I GOT 97 ON IT, YOU ARE A MIRACLE WORKER (I actually can't sew a straight line for my life soooo :))
Thank you so much for this series. I am making memory bears for my husband and SIL from their Dad's old Pendleton wool robe, and for my mother from her Dad's old Pendleton wool shirt. These videos will help me make sure they look great.
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm practicing making a patchwork bear right now as I don't see my son so I want to make him a patchwork bear from my clothes and plan on starting to make my own bears now as I've been collecting for years and want to make my own, just started learning to sew a few months ago and appreciate videos like this as I've learnt so mucj
I've never made stuffed animals before, and I am looking forward to trying this bear. I'm also glad to see that they make safety eyes for stuffed animals. I've always wondered what people do about that. As always, Good job with your instruction Whitney. :-)
+Yvonne Meister Yes, I love the safety eyes and noses! The pattern actually recommends specific shank buttons for the eyes and stitching on a nose, but I didn't want to spend the time sewing those and felt they wouldn't be as safe of an option.
Very cute!! I love making memory animals of all kinds! Using old baby clothes or loved one's clothing brings it so much meaning! #makingmemories #sewing
I am going to start (soon) the memory bears. Some of my family have asked me to make them in memory of lost loved ones. I got a tool to attach the safety eyes so it will be easier. Of course the bears are not for infants so no worry of chewing on them.
I like this idea for the Bears when the chosen fabric does not have buttons. otherwise I like using the buttons. I have not done this yet, so thank you for showing how it's done. Happy Sewing.
I have used iron on facing on thing men shirt material for my memory bears it was much harder to add the eyes than shown in video. I cut the fusible facing just a bit to get the eye thru. Then it worked well.
I use pellon p44f fusible interfacing on all of my bears (including the example in this video). Never had a problem getting the eyes and nose in as long as I poke a hole with an awl first.
OMG, Whitney! This is so helpful! I've been inserting the eyes and nose IN THE SEAM and then putting some fabric glue on the back before installing the clasp. There is a risk of the seam spreading...that is why I used glue. I like your instruction much better AND won't have to buy the glue anymore. :)
Would love a tutorial on the quilt hanging in the background if there isn't one already on your channel for it. :) I can't wait for the rest of this series...seems like a great project to use up scraps with.
+Kimberly Henry I started that quilt over 5 years ago and finally finished it last Fall. Didn't film a tutorial, was just something I made for fun from my scraps.
This is really helpful! Hobby lobby is about 45 minutes away so I usually go to joanns. Where do you get the tool you used to make the holes? I've only seen huge ones in home improvement stores
+kasey hulton I haven't had success finding the same bear eyes and noses at Joanns, but maybe yours will have them. The awl came with my snap setting kit, but you can find them near the leather working area of any craft store as well. I want to get a nicer one with a wooden handle soon since I use it so much now.
Whitney Sews thanks so much!! I will get the eyes and nose from Amazon. My joanns doesn't carry them either. What would we do without Amazon!! Can't wait to see the bear tutorials!!
I just had a memory bear made, but the person who made it didn't give the bear a nose. And she hot glued googly eyes to it. Any suggestions for adding a nose and eyes to a bear that's already put together?
Hey! I have a super random question. I got a huge stuffed animal for my aunt's dog, but it has plastic eyes and a plastic nose. I'm worried it's not safe for dogs. How can I take those off and what would be a safer replacement for them?
Thank you for this - it’s been a while since I made a teddy bear and when I got to this point in a memory bear for my niece I just couldn’t recall the next step. You saved me! 😉
What size are the eyes & 'noses? i looked them up on amazon, but there are so many sizes, i don't know what i need for an 18" bear. thank you for a great video. i couldnt do it with just the pattern.
I have a pattern for an 18 inch bear, what size nose and eyes do I buy? It's a memory bear from my father's flannel shirt. I live in Canada so no Hobby Lobby here and most likely will have to order online.
There are links in the description box for the ones I use. You could try ordering those or get the sizes from the links and check other websites for the same size.
Been watching all your videos as I start a huge project to make 10 memory bears for my mother in law and all her siblings. How do I choose the right eye and nose size?
What if I'm replacing eyes in a stuffed animal that I found at a thrift store or sum? I have a lion and my mom is having a baby boy soon. The previous owner of the lion cut out the eyes and now there are holes where his eyes should be. I was gonna sew the holes up then put in the eyes but I can't rly do that cause idk how I'll put the back piece in the head without loosing it in the fluff. Let alone getting it through the body.
If the old ones were cut out then putting in new ones will not be safe to give to a baby/young child. The eyes are supposed to go in a very snug hole poked in the fabric so they cannot fall out or be ripped out and swallowed.
Hi Whitney , my name is Annette and I live in Tasmania and I’ve been watching you make a memory bear. I’ve sent for the pattern you like best and it’s on the way, I havnt seen in years and when my daughter died in March this year I had a memory bear made as my pain is unbearable. I’ve since decided I’d like to give it a go myself and was wondering what size nose and eyes you use for this pattern . Love watching you sew Thanking you Annette bishop 🌺
I obtained the pattern, I have made my first "practice" bear then I ordered eyes online. The problem is,... the ones I received are too small. Can you tell me what size eyes and noses you are using ?
I'm doing a cat has been stuffed already my cat eyes have a tack behind them how far away should I put my cat's from their nose. Is my first time ever doing something like this you really use some help
I love your memory bears I would love to have the pattern A2115 to make out of some of my son's clothes he passed away in 2016 and I still have all his clothes just can't get rid of them thanks.
Is there a video or can you do a video showing how to put eyes on an animal that is already stuffed? The eyes got ripped out and chewed up of one of mine by my dog and I’m trying to figure out how to put it back together again
Look at the head side piece. There is are two small circles on the seam line and one large circle. They are to mark where the eye and ears are placed. If you have the Simplicity 2115 pattern they are there.
Hi, can anyone tell me where I can find eyes and noses that can be sewn on items? I knit animal kids hats so I cannot have eyes and noses with posts. Thanks.
@@Whitney_Sews Really? Believe it or not, I already did that before posting the question here !!!! I found nothing but one site and they were very expensive.
I would greatly appreciate it if you would do that. I have 5 beats to make out of my father in laws overalls and his shirts. I was going to do the pillows but like the bears so much more. Bill was a WW2 veteran. He was at Pearl Harbor. 90 years old when he passed just short of three years ago. You have a lovely family and you are awesome behind the sewing machine. Keep up the great work. Now to try and figure out how to order in Amazon. Will go back to FB and read. ❤️
What size is the nose? I see where the pattern calls for 12mm eyes but not a size for the nose. Thank you for the Bear series. It has been so very helpful.
You can hand embroider them. The bears I made were intended as keepsake bears, not everyday stuffies so it's a bit different. If you know very small kids will be playing with them all the time make sure to research jow to ensure they are very safe.
To make them look like they are wearing pants just use denim for the legs. The overalls were a specialty thing I did on two bears. Don't have a video on that, but can make one of people are interested.
I have other eyes and i have trouble with tjose cs i have to kinda sew them in Theyre also plain glossy black eyes but on the back they have a little loop that almost looks like a tiny ring. Ive onky used these eyes once on a crochet plushie that i made for myself and the eyes are very loose and idk how to sew them in properly. I pulled a piece of yarn through the little ring and tried to secure the yarn on the inside with the other yarn but still too loose and idk what to do and I just can't find anything to help me I asked my mom and grandmother about it but they donr know either. Anyone here who can help me...? Cs I can't finish some of my projects and requests without these eyes :C
Sounds like they are shank button style. Those are fine to sew on, but they are not true safety eyes. If you are giving the stuffie to a kid 3 years or younger they would not be considered safe.
Unfortunately the eyes are one use only and aren't meant to be taken back apart (that's what makes them kid safe). Any time I mess up the eyes or nose I end up having to remake the entire face.
+Linda Bridges Its so Easy It's Simplicity A2115 (that's the Wal-Mart line of simplicity patterns that are only $1.97) The pattern I out of print, but a lot of Wal-Marts still have some in their pattern drawer or standing racks.

I am! Just got my A2115 pattern in the mail! Do you know when we can expect the series to begin, Whitney? Thank you!
Whitney Sews they're adorable! I'm not a very confident sewer other than simple quilts but might give this a go!
