Giles becoming more handsome is going to be a recurring theme over this show.
That feeling that something is odd was exactly the intention Whedon had. The music was different, the shots were different, the dialogue was different... untill Buffy snaped back into herself. After the "I am Buffy the Vampire Slayer" line near the end, we were back to business.
And the shot of Buffy holding the 2 wheapons in Hell waiting for the demons to attack is one of the most iconic shots of the whole series! So great that Whedon reused the same shot later on... in another Show... and it was even more epic!
But we are not there yet! Maybe later... 😉
Not to mention she was holding a hammer and sickle while leading the workers' revolt (ok, not actually a sickle, but it looked close enough for the metaphor). These little details are one of the reasons I love the show.
That reused shot, in the later version, is one of my favorite in movie history.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Mine too... 🙂
@@Smido83 Wait what reused shot that's later on are you talking about?? Plz let me know I'm gonna go crazy thinking about it haha. Spoiler tag it or dm me or something please!
@@ebabilg *SPOILER*
River at the end of Serenity. After she killed all the Reavers, the door to the gateway where the rest of the crew waits opens... and then the Wall behind her breaks and in a spotlight 10 stroopers stand behind her...
Its the exact same shot of a warrior woman wielding 2 wheapons and awaiting an attack of the enemies. Just more epic. I printed the screenshot of River with the troopers behind her on a poster and it is still hanging on my wall. Just to epic!
18:15 I'd say this is a callback to becomming part 2. "No weapons, no friends.
No hope. Take all that away and what's left?"
"Me"
Also it's a "You are who you are in the darkness" moment. Buffy doesn't save the day because she's the chosen one she saves the day because at the end of the day she likes helping people, in this episode she choses to be the slayer.
The swooping Hero shot of Buffy as she coldly waits for more demons to fight is truly epic.
“Ok ken, bye” 😂 he looks like an unsub on criminals haha
Perhaps it was too much for Joyce to blame Giles for Buffy's leaving but what she said about his influence on Buffy was not incorrect.
💯
Absolutely! It's amazing how every reactor I've seen are against Joyce on that. Giles did have a relationship behind her back.
@@Oxmustube buffy's entire life is not her mothers business - she's becoming an adult!
@@insolencestar His relationship with her began when she was 16. If a man had a relationship with your 16 year old, what would be your reation?
@@Oxmustube firstly my point was that should things have gone to plan, joyce would never have known - and if she took the time to learn she'd know as much. in these circumstances she sees how much danger buffy is in and still elects to act judgementally.. secondly, if it were my child, id speak to him, speak to my daughter, and move forward with caution.. especially if he could prove (which he can) that he is indeed her protector of sorts.
For me, this is the best season of Buffy. The new characters you'll meet soon are amazing. New reaction every day please! (You can have Tuesdays off, I'm not unreasonable.)
I am lol more more more hehe.
- the guy that opens the door when Buffy's trying to go undercover at 12:26 is Jeff Pruitt, the stunt coordinater. He worked from Seasons 2-4.
- Sarah's stunt double is played by Sophia Crawford. She worked from Seasons 1-4. She is also married to the stunt coordinator, Jeff Pruitt.
- The season will feel different because it is 1999. The year alot of movies were happening, many actors becoming well known and MTV was at the top of their game. Ever seen the movie Bring It On? If not, definitely check it out asap. Some things will look familiar including the locations. Good times.
- this will also be the time many trends start to pop off. Especially fashion. Thanks to Britney, Christina, Nsync, Limp Bizkit, etc.
It's funny you mentioned Joyce having displaced anger for Giles, because I think this is the first time I really understood her point of view. Her feelings are pretty valid here - "you hid this entire relationship from me behind my back" - Buffy's been the Slayer for 3 years now and for 3 years Joyce never had an explanation for why she felt so distant from Buffy, for why Buffy would burn down a school and cause them to move, and of course fully understanding who Buffy is-. Three years is long time to carry that pain and we've seen Joyce try to connect with her and Buffy's slayer identity always getting in the way. Buffy has expressed desire in wanting to tell her mom - it's the Watcher's Council that forbids it, but why? Was it really necessary? Could that rule have been broken? I think so...
For some reason unknown to us Kendra's parents were informed about it, so why not?
So does Giles hold some responsibility for that, maybe he does? 🤔
Joyce is to blame. She told Buffy not to come back. Any parent who says those words can't turn cry victim when their child listens. Dont tell someone you dont want them then have pickachu face when they hear you.
Dakar. “Can you imagine that coming down on someone?”
Me thinking “wait for it” followed immediately with “ and there it is”
Yeah you can tell that with the huge monumental success of the 2nd season that the studio gave the Buffy creators way more budget for the 3rd season , the fights are better, the lighting is better and they got a new longer opening credits and everything just looks and feels different, I still love Season 2 and even Season 1 though
They also switched from 16mm to 35mm film this season.
@@MarkusR144
... and rerecorded the theme song.
Season 2 remained the best season despite the limited budget and inconsistency. It shows that when it comes to television characters, acting, dialogue, arc, atmosphere matters a lot more than budget. Also, each season had its own look and vibe, whether due to budget, cinematography or writing.
@@liteflightify I agree Season 2 is my favorite season
"Joyce, you mustn't blame yourself for her leaving."
Whyever not? "If you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back." Remember that line? You left her with the choice of letting the world end or not coming back.
It's kind of amusing that Cordy and Xander were so worried about the other finding someone else over the summer that they nearly broke themselves up.
And, once again we see that Buffy is a hero at her very core. Someone else is in trouble and while she gives lip service to "not my problem" in the end she can't help herself. She just has to get involved to help others.
"I didn't see you" = "I was an idiot focusing on my car's stereo when I should have been watching the road" (a few years later and were he a bit younger I would say "texting." Distracted driving kills, people. Not everybody has slayer strength to withstand being hit.
And so it starts... the best Season of the best show in TV history!
At least in my book! 😊
4:15 Remember the slayer has prophetic dreams.
I was just thinking “I hope she uploads before my lunch break” and here it is! Made my day
Everything's stepped up this season! I can't wait for you to see it. So much goodness ahead! 🙂🙃🙂
not many people will ever know real love, but buffy, after seeing his soul was back, had to kill hers and send him and his human soul to "hell"
just to be able to work through that without help......I cant even imagine the strength that would need....
Absolutely love Lily/Anne returning from Buffys past and helping her getting back to her self.
Ah, yes, it's Buffy the Bolshevik Vampire Slayer!
It does have a different feeling, which I guess you feel even more because you're watching this right after the previous season. But Buffy the character would have changed after everything she went through, so it's appropriate I think.
The one in which Buffy leads a worker's uprising with a hammer and Sickle. ⚒️
Lily/Anne has never really shown the best judgement in her life up until this point. First she was in a vampire cult and now she is willing to believe a guy who says that he can take her to the man that has been helping her through life. She tells Buffy, "He can't be dead. He takes care of me..." The girl is terrified of walking on her own path.
You're right. The argument that Buffy and Joyce had at the end of last season was a BAD one. That being said, because Joyce is still trying to come to terms with Buffy being a slayer as well as Buffy now being missing, I can't fully blame her for lashing out at Giles. Even Harry Potter's Aunt and Uncle knew what he was. They still hated it and treated him like trash because of it, but they KNEW. Joyce didn't know and didn't understand, and now she feels like she has completely lost her daughter because she found out too late.
Also, not just LOSING the love of her life but KILLING the love of her life even after he was "Made Whole" again. She sacrificed him to save the world.
Like you noted, I think it's supposed to feel strange. Because we need Buffy in Sunnydale, and everyone misses one another but it's hard because of what Buffy experienced at the end of season 2. Unfortunately, they just don't know what she had to do to Angel in order to save the world. It's so sad.
A favorite of mine. This is the episode I’ve rewatched more than any other, not sure why, I just like it. 🙃
This was the episode that first introduced me into the Buffyverse, and not a bad way to start. The fight scenes in this episode was really great for its time.
6:00 Giles looks more fashionable with new glasses this year. And the whole show has a different look as they jumped from 16 to 32-mm film for season 3, much higher quality especially for darker scenes.
I love this episode, personally, Buffy fighting the worst, soulless boss with a hammer and a sicle. Look, it's there. I'm not a huge fan of the next episode, but i love season 3. Have fun with it.
This season is more consistent and rocks ! My favorite.
As much as I like dramatic season ends, I often hate the start of the next season, where they try to handle the fallout. Some TV shows like to take half a season to get things back to "normal". And I have to say, I do appreciate that it (mostly) only takes 1 episode here.
Great opening episode, great lines, shots and especially the fight, one of the best of the show.
It wasn't Giles' fault that Buffy ran away, but I think Joyce is justified in feeling angry that Giles has in many ways usurped her parental position and closed her out of Buffy's life. Just a few episodes ago Giles discouraged Buffy from coming clean even to to help her mother protect herself from Angelus.
she definitely is but here she uses that to shift the blame for Buffy running away from herself to Giles
Joyce is my least fav person in the whole show never seemed interested in anything her daughter was doing she has a slight change of heart in school hard but then went back to not giving a F lol
Totally agree.... Joyce's feelings are very valid concerning Buffy and Giles' relationship.
@@chrisallen19821982 How old are you? You sound like a kid, perhaps. Joyce is a really committed and loving parent, and people who don't see that (usually kids) don't know what a bad parent truly looks like.
@@spikesecho724 I am 40 with 3 kids who have loving committed parents who take the time to talk to them rather than bury there head in the sand how old are you???you sound like a condescending old fart!
Welcome to season 3. It's the second best season of Buffy, after season 5 in my view. I look forward to your reactions.
I like season 3, though I don’t really enjoy the first two episodes. I don’t hate either one, but I’d probably skip (at least ep 2) them if I were doing a rewatch.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192
yeah ep 2 is genuinely irritating, tho there's still some good stuff. "do you like my mask? isn't it pretty? it raises the dead! *pfft* ....americans."
Buffy definitely was running away from who she was but in the end of the episode she had to face who she really is the slayer
You'll cry with this series, trust me
I wonder how they're going to treat her in the next episode😬
1:00 It's a great one.
Please don't take away the magic by looking too closely at stunt doubles 🥺🥺 It's very well made, don't look too closely please 😥
Yeah joyce wanted to put the blame on somebody else in this episode
As usual with this show...
When Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's leaving... she is both right and wrong.
On the surface of it, she's completely wrong. But she has every right to resent and protest the secret relationship he has had with her daughter for 2 years.
In the Buffyverse, everybody is right and everybody is wrong.
Love the reactions
Me back in the 90s watching this ..."No Spike no care" Then Girlfriend at the time No Charlie we are still watching 🤣 Ahhh, Stay awesome Dakara Stake on ✏️
Good Reaction :^) ... I think BTVS got a bigger budget, the series is a surprise hit by now... (I like that Cordellia brought up Inca Mummy Girl, and Xander's weird magnet attraction with monsters.)
14:40 I seriously don't know I don't think any slayer has lived long enough for ageing to become an issue. Slayers as a general rule die young.
@Ally K. Well Slayers almost never get sick so perhaps.
14:30 The master of hell really should consider not provoking the slayer.
It's OK, we know that by different vibe you meant different hairstyles. We all had to get used to it :o)
Looking forward to a new Season
This episode is a good one 💯
17:45 You wanted a feelgood episode and this sort of is.
Hey dakara, can you react to The Sandman? New Netflix series? Lucifer Morningstar is in it. But it's not Tom Ellis. It's Gwendoline Christie. It's a great series. You'll love it.
Love the fight scene with buffy the show had great fight scenes
Hello there, you have a watcher all the way from Cape Town... One thing I want to point out though is Joyce wasn't wrong for putting the blame somewhere else. Take all this supernatural goodies away and you see an adult having a separate relationship with a minor. So both has good points. Enjoy the show. The ride is far from over lol.
Is he more handsome? Actor got a couple of seasons of paychecks, money tends to have that effect on people. Eating better, beauty treatments, posh lifestyle.
🥰
I thought Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's terrible attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end escaping the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. The fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects, and of course you alluded to the Theme Tune which is the same, but much more 'meatier' with the Bell sounding at the end.
Out of the forty I have officially ranked so far on my favorite to least favorite list, this episode is #26.
After watching Sandman I feel like someone should comment on that "what is hell if not the absence of hope" line, since well I guess that show disagrees with this sentiment.
Not my favourite episode (though I hate the next one), but it's nice to have a change of location for Buffy
Where do I watch this one?
The change in theme, both in terms of images and music, is iconic and one of those times a change actually WORKS in favour of a series.
This episode always divides people Team Giles and Team Joyce. Personally don’t feel you can tell your minor child to never come home and be morally correct but that’s my 2 cents.
Oh you are so right 💯
U have a black cat. Is his name salem?
i am no one.
do not watch the opening credits for a while
It’s the upgrade. Joss Whedon scripts are always just a little bit crisper, cleaner a more polished product.
Season 3 is the absolute upgrade of all television, absolutely perfect IMO
It's probably in third to last best season for me. It def has a lot of bad to average episodes (mostly the first half) and annoying stuff
Here's the attitude of the Buffy creators.
We're gonna be as silly as we want to be... whenever we want to be.
We're gonna be as deadly serious as we want to be... whenever we want to be.
If you don't like it, go watch something else.
Sarah Michelle Gellar did 80% of the acrobatics and combat...so i don't know why you are being such a sceptic about the fight scenes the whole time.
Buffy needed to stand alone to become strong again though...having her friends is not what makes the show...yes they are all great but you'll see in the next episode that what happened at the end of Season 2 has left fallout that if anything makes Buffy MORE uncertain of who she is. anyway Dead Man's Party is probably one of my least favourite cause i cannot stand the way the character's constantly berate each other.
It doesn’t make sense: 100 years - or 36,500 days- in “hell” is 1 day in our world. Lily fell through the portal about 8 seconds before Buffy did, so that means that she was just lying there for 292,000 seconds -80+ hours- doing nothing until Buffy and Ken arrived… So yeah, the conclusion is I’ve watched this show way too many times :P
It makes a bit more sense if you assume it's not literal. Or you could write it off as Narnia time.
you've either thought about it too much, or not enough. even a rate of 100 years == 100.0001 years would create serious problems if it were a discontinuous barrier like you're imagining, because every person is momentarily half on one side and half on the other. the way to make it work is to say that there's a transition zone. time moves at one rate on one end of that hallway, and at a different rate at the other end of the hallway, and smoothly transitions between the two along that hallway.
