Kyle has a lot to learn, but taking the MSF course is a good start. See if you like it first. I'm predicting he discovers a hobby he loves more than he ever liked guns.
Check reviews on how comfortable it feels on long rides.... I used to have a Yamaha yzf r-6 and loved it, BUT had to stop every 30-45 minutes because my back and shoulders would start hurting. And get a nice pair of gloves! A cool night will freeze your hands.
Kyle, never rode motorcycles.....I’m not going to crash...you better get ALL the gear because you’re the perfect candidate for falling.
Also, you’d be amazed by how many accidents happen on those 5 minute rides to the store without gear. Happened to a friend the one time he didn’t wear gear for a close ride....someone pulled out in front of him last second and had to lay the bike down...
Not concerned with road rash....wait until you realize there’s not enough morphine when they are sanitizing the wound and scraping all that shit out with a brush...
worst crash i ever had on a motorbike was at like 5mph... going to the shop, in jeans and i grated a hole into my left knee between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball...
had 50mph crashes in leathers and just skidded on my merry ass and got up with no holes :D

I dropped my CBR in my buddies gravel driveway and accidentally revved the shit out of it. I knew he would hear it and be out soon so I struggled to pick it up quick and just acted like I was revving it like a Douchebag.
Speaking of Gatlinburg / pigeon forge..... I was vacationing up there and saw the aftermath of a guy on a crotch rocket that had hit a bear. Bear was killed but I think the guy survived..... he was conscious and moving while the emt’s were working on him
I’ve loved motorbikes since I was a kid. I got my first one at 5 year old a little Honda Z50R and had bikes until I highsided a bike a paralysed myself.

I road a bike for 2 summers, and every time my life was threatened, it was because of another vehicle not paying attention, running lights and stop signs, it's terrible. People don't fucking pay attention and it does not matter one bit how well you ride or pay attention. There's always gonna be some asshole that doesn't care.
Bilt is trash tier gear definitely wouldn't recommend it at all. I'd recommend icon as a great starter for gear they even have kevlar pants

The thing about pulling up next to people.....some times times the clear loser wins, because they have mods. Certain cars are likely to have upgrades like Camaros, older turbo Honda’s, corvettes, chargers, etc, etc, etc.

Honestly, if you want to get a motorcycle just to ride without an adrenaline rush, get a cruiser. You don't have to get a Harley, either.....in fact, you shouldn't. They're massively overpriced and aren't really worth the cost. I have a Honda Shadow 750 and it's great. It hauled me and my girlfriend on a 300 mile trip along with our luggage without an issue.
woody that's an older one there like haveing a classic car you have to take extra care of them the new ones are like owning a bmw
Take the motorcycle safety course. Buy CE level 2 helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves. You can slide many times in leather, only once in textile super fabrics. All should have knee, hip, elbow, shoulder, armor. A transition lens on your helmet that darkens in the sun automatically is convenient. Ear buds will protect your ears and provide navigation with your mounted phone. Figure if you want to ride on the street or get a dual sport to ride some dirt. A race replica sport bike is not practical or comfortable. A middle weight sport-touring bike like Woodys is the way to go. (450 lbs.) with mid sized engine (650cc) is a good place to start. Cruisers are sort of boring. Suggest soft waterproof saddle bags you can go moto camping with over multiple days. Western NC has great roads. I'm on my 17th bike and already have over 40,000 miles exploring the mountains here. Your looking for an upright seating position for long rides. Good all around bikes, Suzuki V-Strom, Kawaski Versys 650, Yamaha FJ-09, Honda NC 750. Spend 3 to 5k on a reliable used Japanese fuel injected bike. It will serve you well and you can always get most of your money back if you want to sell it. I'm thinking of starting a moto touring business and have 3 rooms available in Asheville. Fall is the perfect time to ride. Hit me up.
