They are simply one of the greatest rock bands of New Wave. It's a bummer that this isn't on the Tom Snyder compilation. But then again, The Clash, Adam Ant, and U2 wasn't featured on the DVD collection either.
Omg!! Little brother Neil took over the band you can see it!!! You can see Tim not joining in properly. Neil started writing songs for his big brothers band.
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. I was transfixed and from that moment on I just HAD to be a musician. Thank you Split Enz.
One day the dozy world will recognize just how brilliant the Enz were, not for a while it seems, luckily some are more ahead and can savour this band now.
WOW...'I Got You' has always been one of my favorites, but this is awesome...Snyder always had great guests but his interviews with them always had me scratching my head cause he would ask the most ridiculous questions, as if he had no background information about his guests, made him look like an idiot.....thanks for this vid, it's great
Ohhhhh, I have been waiting to see this again ever since the night it was shown. Thank you so much!! Do you have the interview as well? I remember Tom Snyder seeming amazed that they spoke English! I also remember wearing a Maori necklace and Tom asking about it.
It makes it hard as well when there's no foldback speakers (the boxes you sometimes see at the front of the stage there the sound is mixed a certain way by the sound engineers - it allows the musicians to hear what the others are playing and get in time/key with the others). Sound coming from the back of you is also different than when it is in your face.
Shouldn't this be considered to be "very rare" as for as a Split Enz performance for that song? I remember the "Tomorrow Show" with Tom Snyder. With Carson on a 10:30 - 12 cst, Snyder did his thing 'til 1:30, until they both backed up to an hour!
Sorry Noel but this is played way too slow. Maybe nerves because the tempo was fine on the corresponding tour. The performance of Hard Act to Follow here is way better.
I think even this song would be better off by Larry's Rebels! This is the worst thing what happened to my beautiful song! Creep! And plus that Crowded House version! Ech!!!!
I was 17 years old in 1980 when this hit came ouy and I still love split enz today after all those decades past.
I was born in 80, now 40 and I love it more than when I found this track.
Big Split Enz fan when this came out. I think I played it for two years straight making everyone I knew listen.
This was a great performance. These guys peaked when I was going from Primary to High School. Perfect time to experience them.
A song that holds a lot of meaning.... Beautiful tune and lyrics. Pays to be one step ahead
...but are ya?
The guy that designed those fantastic clothes is the one and only Noel Crombie the 'Enz percussionist. He's quite the genius.
Oh my God how i miss this song on the radio.
Baby faced Neil Finn is adorable 💜
That keyboard part is so majestic!

Bros Finn - musical geniuses. No more to say. What a great relic and treasure :-)

Indeed. Very underrated. Can't imagine Enz without him.
For some reason, this song popped into my head, and I just had to find it! Thanks so much for posting !!

I actually like this a lot better than the studio version.
So incredible!!!!
So beautiful
I STILL LOVE THEM. NEIL FINN IS AWESOME

Oh man, the facial expressions! BOYS! So ridiculously young (now I feel old).
Just came across this and wow amazing
I miss when MTV played Music.
It's about Eddie Rayner on keyboards. He really drives the song.

tim finn is great!

Interesting version. The beat is dragging a bit here, but it would appear that was intentional.
Amazing sleigh bell solo
Any questions on why the Enzs got sucessful when Neil joined?
I said to my boss today when he was telling me what to do! He said ok then, I should know by now!
oh yeah... these guys ruuuule
we call those monitors here in the US of A ;) (are you in Australia or NZ? They call monitors "foldback speakers" there?)
1981??

They used to, Gary, but everyone probably uses the term "monitor" nowadays.
@JLIV461 I can't pass up the to respond to that! As the saying goes now MTV stands for Moron TV!
I don't think so.
Foldback speakers is a British term, but now everyone calls them "monitors".
why is it that when aussie bands play abstract music there's never any lyrics. yet when the finn brothers do it they sing over it. must be the dope
ahem, (nudging you softly), whispering 'they're from New Zealand'. All good.
Excellent tune.) The key board sounds i bit out of place in my opinion.
Lol
dribble that aint even luke warm...

are you stoned? Whose song do you think it is?
+racketman2u Alastair Riddell is really creepy New Zealander! Neil Finn isn't! Neil Finn's mom died she was Irish! Poor Neil Finn!
+Dyane Myystery you crazy
Not really in tune mister Neil... but still nice...
