This style of dance is called Yosakoi, and it came about after WWII as a way to raise spirits. While the dance itself is not "Traditional", it does take a lot of inspiration from old fishing moves. At least, the earlier stuff does. Now it seems like Yosakoi has morphed into this really cool form of expression that ranges anywhere from super-traditional style to aliens and rainbows and dubstep to any combination of the two, and it is absolutely my favorite thing about Japan. If you ever have the opportunity to go to a festival and watch Yosakoi, absolutely do it. I do not know how to put into words the kind of power and energy that most groups manage to send to the audience. SO cool. The unfortunate thing about Yosakoi is that once you leave Japan, Yosakoi teams become very few and far between. Here in the United States, there are only three teams that I know of; UC Berkely, 10tecomai in NYC, and my team in the middle of nowhere, Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Oh, and if you ever live in Japan/study abroad, by all means find a team and join. You'll have a great time.
Ryan Kenny, You kind sir have learned a lot of history of Japan and I am envy you in a good way heck I would go private lessons to learn about Oda Nobuna or did I spell the name wrong? Please don't hate me if I did I just suck.
Personally I think Yosakoi is becoming more popular nowadays, at least in Vietnam as there are more than 25 teams and counting here, and Hanoi alone already has up to 20. There are also Yosakoi teams in Canada, Australia, Indonesia and even some in China if I'm not wrong.
This dance is not traditional, it is called よさこい (yosakoi) and it was invented in Kochi Prefecture in the early 1950s. I do yosakoi at my university here in Kyoto. It is quite amazing, I agree.
Actually, in Yosakoi, any music arrangement is acceptable, so it isn't much of a matter whether it matches and naruko has to be used in a Yosakoi dance
Is it just me or does anybody else find Japanese/Chinese/Korean traditional dance and costume more artistic than other culture? Maybe because the dance/costume reminds me of beautiful games like Final Fantasy.
that region of the world had the longest uninterrupted period of civilization. So the traditional culture is more refined than other parts of the world.
Mmmm... How many traditional dances and costumes from the different regions in the world do you know? Japanese/Korean/Chinese? Their costumes have some features in common, but their traditional dances are completely different. I think FF are not good games for knowing the traditional costumes or dances. Well, I think the FF games are not good games at all... (the FFVI and FFVII are the exception).
I mean like you know... what if... the border of modern and traditional its still none yet to be existed so like traditional dance is still growing and developing...
This dance isn't an evolution of the tradition since there isn't any process from traditional dances to this. This is the typical modern dance for tv shows, so it isn't Japanese or traditional at all. The only "traditional Japanese" thing here are the traditional costumes (although they are lightly modernised). I guess they are dancing with the song of any Edo inspired anime: that explains the mix of traditional costumes & modern song / dance.
Racist?! What the hell has the racism to do with our comments? Being a modern country is conciliable with having a cultural identity and preserving traditional dances. I don't know where are you from, but in Europe we have modern countries and we distinguish our traditional dances and modern dances. We would never say that a modern tv show dances is European or traditional, even if the dancers were wearing traditional clothes. By the way, the genuine Japanese traditional dances are definitively much better than this tv show dance. The traditional dances are generally much better than modern dances.
So beautiful! And me and my parents will go back to Japan after I finished college! And I'm so hyped that I'm almost graduating college. For 13 years, I can finally go home to my homeland!
it's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my whole life it's so energetic and graceful it works my soul so much. I am in love with the Japanese culture it amazes me so much I love everything that they do.
As a Legit Indigenous Native American Indian from Northern California...various races of people CAN create their own traditions. I encourage the youth to hold onto and practice their own for future generations. It may seem redundant nevertheless, when your older generation is gone WHAT will you pass on??! Great Coverage..it’s Beautiful! 🙇🏻♀️🔍🔑☝🏽🌎❤️💪🏽
I´m not one to tell the difference wether this dance is modern or traditional, I just love the coordination of it and the colorful clothing! Great job on recording this video Rody!
If u guys are wondering what's the music, u should search up 'Sano creation KanoN' in soundcloud, I guarantee it's there. I legit scanned the whole video to search up for the lyrics hahaha
One time on NicoNico Douga I saw a live broadcast of some sort of yearly traditional Japanese dancing competition that looked similar to this sort of thing. Man it looked so amazing, there were giant flags and awesome choreography in giant groups. I would love to take part in something like that if I ever went to Japan. It looks like so much fun!
I am captivated and I'm 10 seconds into the video I love the traditional dresses and dances just everything about Japanese tradition that I know so far I love the Japanese culture is beautiful by the way what is the song at 1:50
Nice footage and a good street vibe to it. The early inclusion of the shoulder and the other photographer gave it a Robert Frank {American Photographer} feel with his street/crowd works. Thank-you.
OK, Americas got to admit, they aren't in the same league as Japanese, in dance. I see one *big* difference in the dances between the Japanese (and other culture that still add tradition to their dancing) and the modern Americanized dancing. Every movement of there hands is part of the dance and their dances seem to tell stories. The contemporary dancers are more like "See how flashy I am".
lol this is what i wish traditional dancing looked like. a maiko that actually danced like the name implies, wouldnt that be adorable? but im glad i finally found a more lively form of dancing
As many comments say, this is not traditional at all, hahaha :) よさこい(Yosakoi dance) had been more traditional and beautiful in Tosa when I was a kid.😂 どうしてこうなった…
Flag dude is back there like "oh sure....y'all think the dancers are putt'n in work :T "
*pulls out giant parasol*
🤣
lol

This entire dance was so beautiful! I love the costumes and props they used as well!
This isn't traditional. It looks pretty damned modern to me.
p.s. Flag guy is the best.
Uatemydoodle what if because in japan the traditional didn't end... so by the way its been modern its still considered traditional...

"traditional" in a anime universe (**just saying this caracterization doesnt match the period it was implemented 🙄)
😂
the name is Yosakoi and yes it is a traditional dance. if you don't know something try first looking for about
@@lins1530hahahah babe, if yosakoi came after WW2 its not traditional like the costume insinuates. is just a lil old but is not like that 😅

Truths 😂😂😂 it has just been a few decades. Yosakoi really is kinda latter-day thing. Traditional is something like awa Odori
