H-Street - Shackle Me Not (Full) Matt Hensley, Danny Way, Tony Magnusson

- H-Street was founded circa 1986, by professional skateboarder Tony Mag and bro Mike Ternasky. The two teamed up with pro skateboarder Dave Andrecht to form the first skateboard company that was run by skateboarders.
T-Mags basic idea was that skateboard companies should be run by skateboarders and not guys in suits that didn't ride, and that skateboarding should be a source of free and individual expression. The fact most towns in America have an actual H-Street somewhere, made it into an every town idea. H-Street is inclusive, not exclusive.
Inspired by Powell’s success in making skateboard videos, but limited to the budget of a real skateboarder, T-Mag and Mike theorized that a skate video could be made with a cheap VHS camera and edited at their pad on a VCR. Since this was the basic home video equipment available early in the 80′s the two ventured into uncharted waters. Knowing that it was more important to have skateboarders that demonstrated innovation and style for the sport than have a big budget, they invested in skaters that would become some of the world's best, Danny Way, Matt Hensley, Mike Carrol, The Godoy brothers, Sal Barbier and Erick Koston just to name a few.
The team started with John Schultes from Del Mar and John Sonner from Vista. Soon Ron Allen was added, who was originally a friend of Mike's from Nor Cal. One summer later, the video Shackle Me Not was born and would change the way that skateboard videos were made from that point on. A year later, Louisiana swamp rat Sal Barbier was added to the team, along with Alphonzo Rawls and several other top skaters of that time, and Hokus Pokus was made. Together Hokus Pokus and Shackle Me Not would take the skateboard world by storm; the videos became some of the most watched skate videos of all time. H-Street would eventually produce five major videos, with such notable skaters as Eric Koston, Mike Carrol, Jason Rogers, Colby Carter, Chad Vogt, and many other top pros of that era.

43yrs old still love watching this
45 😂 and the same
49 love my mini ramp.
It’s finally my time
To rock the mic
Hellconcaaaaaave
Same 40!
48 and still skating, along with my teen son. Once you’re a skater you are ALWAYS a skater. There’s no escaping it
You'll never know the full power of this vid unless you were there.... a part of my life
I’m 47 now and still remember watching this when it came out! The tricks today are insane and something we thought no one could do! I wish we could go back to these days!
I skated past this era (started mid 80s to late 90s) the street tricks look basic now, but the heavier, larger decks with less concave, bigger wheels & trucks y'all youth watching this prob have no idea the strength/nuance it took to do this. This was before, decks, wheels & trucks got lighter to compliment this style. I could only flip/trick 40% what I could after skate tech got lighter/more refined.
I'm 47 as well and I remember when this video came out. My crew and I would sit around watching it and get extra stoked before hitting the streets.
@@kingkeef8168 Same! And stoked is definitely the term!!!!
@@DB742 So true, in 89 I think? I had a Vision Johnny Kop on Gull Wing Super Pro 3's with Toxic Secret Wheels, It was like Kick Flippin' an HGV!!!
my adolescence was spent watching this video religiously
still love it
Youre still a prepubescent virgin! What are you talking 'bout?😂
ditto
Mine too. Raw and crude as it was even then, I never got tired of watching 'ShMN' in my old VHS. Being nowadays 46 years old does not destroy those sensations!
Life was fresh back then . excitement around every corner
Same.
Just turned 46, just started skating again. I would watch this, then go skate everyday, all day!!! Matt H is still rad!!!
I remember when this vid came and my buddy ordered it from Thrasher and we watched it at his house. We were so blown away! Up to that point the Powell and Santa Cruz videos were our bibles, then H-Street just took what we thought was possible to the next level. We hit the streets with a vengeance that day and tried to learn all the new tricks we saw. Hand rails? We were like “Whaaat?!” Man at that time skating was progressing so fast, new tricks were coming out all of the time. Innovation was happening with new pros and new companies popping up like every couple of months. Nobody really had a half-pipe around here in Jersey so street was the thing and this was way before skating was cool so only the punks and outcasts were skaters or freestyle bikers. I begged my parents to let me build a mini-ramp in our backyard but I settled for a small ramp and a rail slider. Nowadays I kick around on my long board and a 10 year old Alien Workshop board. I don’t skate but here and there, can’t do much more than a few tricks but I still look at curbs and handrails like I used to. This video brings me back in a big way, got me stoked to get an old school board, with a shape and some real concave, long and wide with loose trucks! These band-aid boards that have become the ubiquitous standardized skate equipment just never did it for me. They lack the variety and uniqueness that defined skatings earlier times. That’s what happens when something like an art form becomes a sport, it has to fit into a package for easier commercialization. Something was lost in that transition with skateboarding. And I think some of the soul went with it. But hey that’s progress I guess.
Yes
dig it homey ..peace bro ...
Exactly my fellow sk8 brother 4 life!! This is why we are all connected through these amazing memory data banks called SKATEBOARDING with H-STREET!!! mm--mm--aa--ttt----Hensley!!!
I can relate. No ramps really in NY in the 80s so we were street skaters by default. It baffles me still the way people in California talk about it like this was a choice vert or street. For them I guess it was, but no one's folks in 80s NY were going to let them build a half pipe in the backyard nor would a city build one. Thankfully that's changed because some of the places we went to find good spots the skate and the antics we got up to and I was hardly to worst offender, would make me as a parent today grateful that I know the kids are at the skate park with some degree of supervision. I personally like the double tailed boards, but I hear you that the uniformity of a sport takes away from the culture of skating. Shackle-Me-Not was the breakthrough video where skating was shown for the raw sport it is.
Great description. The art is gone. Replaced progress with progression and competition. Pretty gay.
48yrs old and this was the video that inspired us even more to skate! Other than having my daughter this was the greatest time of my life by far! 😎
Yep, me too. Lived it loved it
What an impact Mike Ternasky had on skateboarding. At least we have this opus to remember him by.
This is.... DIY...
Totally, I met him at the Visalia skatecamp in 88. He was a really cool guy . . .
Skaters from that era owe that man a lot.
To the next gen of skaters, THIS film was a gamechanger. This, to me, was the time, '88/'89 that was the end of one era and the beginning of another. You decide the rest.
Totally! When me and all my friends saw this one we were all thrown back, it was a new day that's for sure!
This and hocus pocus was fkn up there, matt hensley was aGod to me at 14yo lmao
None of that fake shit Powell videos had and real punk rock
It's funny how amazing this was at the time, but 2 years later was horribly outdated. The sport grew so fast. Try to explain Nyjah Huston to guys in 1988, doing flip back smiths down monster rails every try.
Lexicon Devil give chuck treece a break though. McRad was cool
So stoked you uploaded this. My skateboard childhood, so to speak.
www.mixcloud.com/jenkemmag/mcshred-neil-nices-skate-rock-mix/
This entire video is the soundtrack of my childhood. Thanks for the memories Mike and Tony.
"Cause I'm the witch doctor... Yeah! YEAH!"
I seen the video and begged my mom to go to the skate shop and buy Matt Hensley's deck. I mowed the lawn every three days during the summer after. Then started mowing other lawns for money then bought a Danny Way deck by myself. I was addicted.
This makes me miss my childhood. Thank you for uploading this!
I remember like it was yesterday that my friend called me up and told me "GET TO MY HOUSE QUICK" I hurried and grabbed my board and out the door, I was 10 years old and started skating across town thinking that there was a emergency order something. I get there and he rushed me to the TV and said "WE GOTTA WATCH THIS VIDEO, IT'S INSANE". I remember that I was blown away by the skating. After the video, we couldn't stop talking about it and had to go shred. It's just one of those moments in my life I will never forget.
Great soundtrack!
Im 49 almost 50 and still love skateboarding.
Shout out to UK skaters from back in the day. This video ruled. Endless summers rollin' on G bones.
uk shredders southsea skate park , slades farm and new milton 89 - 92 south coast yesss
Yes mate, bright green 97A!
24:21 That is some love, man !
I used to skate in the 80's. Best years of my life...
The best skateboard movie ever...
Brings back the beautiful summer memories of no school , sunny days , watching this and Ban This and Hokus Pokus everyday religiously before skating , and also repeating the lines to each other .
That feeling is universally mutual
I always loved the guitar piece between Eddie Elguato and super sonic skate camp.
From the breadcrumbs in the credits, I'm thinking it may be Steve Guerrero. I think I found some more "contemporary" clips of him that still had similar guitar work.
Man this video changed skateboarding forever!! Even with the beyond phenomenal skaters today I still love watching these H-Street vidz!! Defined my childhood and still apart of me.
This and hokus pokus changed my life! Lol
Like a lot of people I didn't have access to a vert ramp so street skating was what I had...and after watching Animal Chin a million times this came along and stunned my eyes. Lovely trip down memory lane.
29:46 that is me at the Benicia park! been looking for this for years
That's awesome you were in one of the best videos of all time man.
Sick, just the nose manny? and the tricks before?
@@deca-lo2jl just the nose manny. I wasn’t sponsored by them so that was plenty for me.
I used to skate there too! Hella fun back then!
That's awesome! Only skated there once in 1991 while on vacation.
Great memories and one of the best times of my life. This movie help our group of skaters to learn many skills, thanks for that. Long live Skateboarding .....
What’s incredible is this still “feels” new to a 48 yr old that remembers vigorously throwing this into my VCR as a 13 year old when it first came out. I guess it will always feel that way.
Takes me back when I had my Natas board. Best board I've skated with
I was a vert skater and these parts of Danny Ways took us to the next level.
The best SK8 video ever... with the best sound track! it all started here ❤
2019 and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this video in any kind of clarity since I first had a 6th gen grainy VHS dub in 1988 😂
Il be 44 this all fell in my best skating days what memories wow little Danny Way and all the music awesome stuff I had the vision shoes with the V ON THE SIDE 😆
I was 14 when this came out and I got my vhs copy. I was living in another Country. So reminiscent of my adolescence. Nostalgic...
Thanks for this. Brings back good memories.
I watched this movie a trizillion times and went skateboarding afterwards.
What a time to be a skater; during the glory days of skateboarding.
Quite possibly the best soundtrack to a skate movie..and one of the most influential ones from that era.
Great time back then! Watched this video everyday and went straight skateboarding. I am still amazed how skateboarding is evolving. The tricks the kids are doing today are insane! Much Love!
Now watching this again after 20 years you see how sketchy street was. SO COOL.
thanks so much for uploading this. Been wanting to watch it for 30+ years.
Hensley!
trzarector was that dude!!!
fuck yes
that part is legendary
Thanks for uploading this. LOL I grew up in Vista and was a total skate gumbie. It's hilarious looking back at this. Back in the day I skated at all the spots in the video and have ridden with most of the guys in the video. It's pretty unreal looking back to realize that I grew up in the middle of that time in skateboarding. Just wish I had 1/2 the talent of those guys. Definitely an amazing time to be a skater.
My teenage life. Awesome shit to that times + now and ever. Hensley forever!
Here's an attempt at breaking out the soundtrack on this. This is from some of my own chasing then pulling from commenters on thread already, THANK YOU! I am happy to keep on incorporating, please reply for any updates. Thanks @bruno_galiego
I'm thinking all of the moody guitar pieces (e.g. 13:06, 36:16 & 39:24) are of Steve Guerrero who is listed in the music credits..

I still remember how my jaw dropped from all these sequences at the first viewing. However, like others, this was influential not just for the skating. the music has seemed to stay with me just as much as the footage.
Here are the puzzle pieces from the credits, which also seems to omit all the Brazilian punk/post punk stuff... so this was definitely not complete...

Some other notes on the SMN ST here from some exchange with Matt Hensley:
avisualsound.wordpress.com/2009/12/07/a-whole-lot-more/
“Shackle Me Not was all Mike Ternasky’s roommate’s music, he was a budding hip hop, electronic kind of guy. There were a couple really great bands in there, other than that it was mostly this dude’s music. A lot of that was that weird electronic sound going on. I didn’t pick the song out for my part. To be honest, that first video, noone knew that it was gonna do what it did, you know what I mean? Maybe Mike knew, but we never thought that a year later we’d be in Europe watching it in movie theaters and doing these huge demos."

Cheers
@@frondantrieb damn. Always had the best style
i had a tony mag board .. skated that thing to splinters ;) Loved this video , came out right as i went to high school
42:38 Double kickflip on flat with a big fat 80's street board in 1988, wow!
51 and watching my VHS tape from 1988.
Thought I'd check the comments here.
This brings back so many memories, our group would watch and practice every trick on this video.
...If only Matt Hensley was available to Tauch us....
My neighbour called his dog Hensley after this ripper! 👍
Hell concave, Hell concave, H H H H H Hell concave - Real steep tail - once you go to hell you can't come back.... Good times.
My only response to that rap is a cringe.
so 1988, Matt Hensley possibly did the first No-Comply 360 Hardflip?
Yup. This video redefined street skateboarding for us concrete & launch junkies.
It was called a blackout back then
@@BushyHairedStranger after this me and the boys started building launch ramps Jesus what a fantastic time to be alive
Great video...always remember being blown away by Tony Magnusson!
Yooooo!! I love these videos man!! Fark yes let's go!
I seen this At a friends while on vacation or something back in the day, then I finally ordered me a copy, even switched to H street Boards, one of BEST SK8 videos to EVER EXIST! I rode a Rodney Allen board
Definitely a contender for the one of best intros to a skate vid ever.
I was at the Premier in London... H-Street were there with us - wow - good times!!!
We all watched this in a theatre in Charing Cross road in 1988 ,,, we all was blown away
Love this as much now as well as in the eighties/post80's. Hokus Pokus and that's all you need.
That's so true this is like medicine for me when I watch it .
This vid changed my mental and life in a profound way like this is not the new h street video...
“...that kinda stokes me, when I see a kid do something that I touch ‘em...that I taught ‘em.” So funny I still remember lines like that from these old skate videos!
yeeeesss!!! that video is legendary!
Danny way was just so ahead of his time he fu*** ripps one of my favourite skaters buy a mile 👊
Art Godoy 33.02 music is epic. Kirk and the jerks. "To bad for heaven, to good for hell" great track.
Classic! Thanks
Love this so much!! This really motivated me as a beginner because of how basic and righteous the tricks looked ! For example (fakie big spins, no complys, kickflip) the list goes on!
Hell concave!!!!
BlueLou Boyle It's a real rad board 😉
That's pronounced he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-hell concave
Once you go to hell you don't come back
Thank you!
not seen this vid in years! matt had a big influence on my skating back in the day. i had the white black/red airwalks boots with the lace savers. used to have black cut off jogging bottom shorts and my red h street hooded top. great days. :-)
51 and still skating. Takes me back to highschool days❤
These guys were the innovators of what we call today street skating.
49 now and I still love it
TY RIDE Chanel. I m happy :)
Hell yeah, one of my favourites
Me in 2020 riding a 7.75 Blind deck with 5.0 sensor trucks and 7 ply maple wondering how tf these dudes in the 80's made it took so easy on those boards.. 🤯🤯
This and Hokus Pokus influenced me as a skater in the late80s/early90s
this is a work of art.
I live in Maine and Matt’s mom has a house here and I used to see him at my local mall. He was so cool and had no ego
One of the best from that period!!!
Hahaaaaa.....I remember I bought this tape from the local shop! Friends would ask to borrow it ALL THE TIME, and I was like "Hell No" and held on to it like it was the Holy Grail!!! Specifically remember the "SuperSonicSkateboard' song, LOVE IT
Maybe the more influential skateboard video ever. The handrail revolution, the No comply madness, the trick to trick birth, Danny Way first appearance.
Everything is there.
These were special days for skateboarding.
yoooooooooooo.!i love it
23:10 fk yess....2023- still insane
Classic shit right here. This video changed everything.
This shit changed my life for real.
I saw the H Street team around this time at Rotation Station in Rockford, Illinois. I had a shirt with all thier signatures but it got lost in the shuffle.
Best skate video ever made.
How can you say that ? Hokus Pokus is .!!!!
wow a blast from the past for me
Please do Hokus Pokus next! It is one of the top 5 skate videos of all time
snuff411 we will do Hokus Pokus next month for sure!
OMG
Matt Hensley and Ron Allen were and are my HERO's!!!!
I did everything I could to be like these guys and others. Watched this many times.
Such a sick video.Tony Mag was rippin!
classic 😮👍💯
Greatest skate vid in history
Me at 15 " Just tell us what this is supposed to look like" This was the answer
Love it
Yea Sal from the South! Damn watching this made me go skate!
47 watching this took me the fuk back in time
I remember watching this on my VCR
This video lead me to a life of saying who anytime someone says the name Matt.
Saying "Yeaah Matt" anytime someone landed something sick was common for my friends and I. None of us were of course named Matt.
My 1st board was a Hensley roached out. Used of course ripped it tell it turned into wood chips best felling in the world . no internet no local shops . it was hard to get a pro board and I had a Matt Hensley beautiful times
Mítico. Grandes recuerdos. Awesome
old memories.
What’s the third track iD for Heneys piece. Dead Can Dance?
