The lyrics to this song are just absolutely perfect for our day and age. "There she stands so tall and mighty Her gaze facing the east At her back our doors are closing, as we grin and bare our teeth On the wind the wolves are howling She cries ‘they’re drawing near’ Turn around, turn around, my darling, no, the wolves are here"
As a neighbor to the north,(Canadian), this song, and this performance of it moves me to tears. You folks are so talented, moreso gifted as musician healers. I hold you and your oh so hurting nation in my heart. Please Andrew and Emily, stay well and stay safely courageous.
Michael Wattie..neighbor to the North. Canada was my second home, I lived there and owned property among the shores of Lake of the Woods. My heart and Spirit kin to the native Cree. I thank you for your concern for the people of the US, but do not think that what’s happening here is confined within our borders.Your land and people I too so love are more endangered then we here. For you have been disarmed and so fewer willing or able to take up the fight... to me their music is a soothing Baum upon the wounds within my heart for both our lands and it’s people. Take care my brother.
Same here. Starting accidentaly with Gospel Shoes few week ago, already having more than 50 songs playlist and keep discovering. They literally take your heart and melt it down.
My brother has always been good friends with Andrew. Back in the day my mom would let my brother throw house parties just so she could listen to Andrew come play music. Can't wait to see them in Durham next week!
"At my gate I'll always greet you At my door you're welcome in There can be no transgression As a means to an end On the wind the wolves are howling Open arms are closed in fear Helping hands are clenched in anger Broken hearts beyond repair Everything's so great can't get better, makes me wanna cry That I'll go out howling at the moon tonight There she stands, so tall and mighty With her keen and watchful eye And the heart of a mother Holding out her guiding light It's a hard road to travel Solid rock from end to end The sun, it rises on her brow And sets upon the great expanse Everything's so great can't get better, makes me wanna cry But I'll go out howling at the moon tonight There she stands, so tall and mighty Her gaze facing the east At her back our doors are closing As we grin and bare our teeth On the wind the wolves are howling She cries to draw 'em near Turn around, turn around my darling No, the wolves are here Everything's so great can't get better, makes me wanna cry But I'll go out howling at the moon tonight Yeah I'll go out howling at the moon tonight"
@@hardinmichael1981 I believe after some reflection that it is No, the wolves are here. The reason why is because in the final stanza the narrator is speaking directly to Lady Liberty. He says she faces east while behind her, we close our doors and bare our teeth. Lady Liberty seems to be beckoning to the Wolves and the narrator asks her to turn around. To fast west rather than East. To turn back towards the closing door but she refuses. She declines his invitation of "turn around my darling" telling him "no, the wolves are here" as if to say that the idea of Liberty and freedom is most important when the wolves are at the proverbial door.
The wolves have been inside the fence for quite some time now, the question is in what form? We might be surprised...Your music means a lot to me, on so many levels.
Man. I needed to hear these two lately. They produce such beautiful melodies and play and sing so well. Remind you the world doesn't gotta be all pain. There's something special bout their tunes

At first I thought, “Oh no! Electric guitar and drums.” But wow, that was amazing! Great song. Great performance by a whole band of fantastic musicians. Thank you!!!
Okay, I listened to this again and it moves me to tear. The music and the lyrics it kindly wraps, and warmly holds are so wonderful and important and blessed. The mother your lyrics describe; Lady Liberty I think. Thanks again and again Andrew and Emily, and guys in the band. Your work is beautiful, what you see and say bring hope so needed in a time and place that has become afraid and unkind
Michael Wattie that’s what I thought too, but then I read this article by Rolling Stone that said it’s about an elderly woman. I think it’s open to interpretation though!!
"there she stands so tall and mighty with her keen and watch-full eye and the heart of a mother holding out her guiding light its a hard road to travel so wrought from end to end the sun rises on her brow and sets upon the great expanse" Pretty sure you nailed it bro
Its about lady liberty for sure, but not in a good way. Its about how Americans have turned their backs on immigrants. Listen again. Its so obvious when you listen to it that way.
Just perfection. So much music to choose from but when gorgeous lyrics are wrapped in a beautiful melody and just right accompaniment it just doesn’t get better.
I love this particular recording so much. I have listened to it dozens of times. It struck me tonight how well Josh comes through in this track. Love it.

absolutely brother. ABSOLUTELY. i've never went to a live big show before no matter what bands came in ... but these guys? any days, and any price tho i wouldn't think they'd charge an eye. :)
A really subtle way to comment on the closed door policy of those who are descended from ones that a few generations ago were welcomed. Too many rats in this cage I guess, or maybe I should say wolves. I really like these folks...their music is soulful and real, and harmonies outstanding. Two types of of people in the world. Those who love these guys, and those who haven’t heard them yet. Just saw them in LA at Ace Theater. Incredible.
