      You know, Jonny - the funniest thing happened - I thought I would definitely remember the gist of the song, at least enough to riff on it a bit when I got to the car, but when I did, it seems like I forgot all of it! Oh well - gotta watch the video again! Speaking of Senseis, Jonny - my original Sensei was Iida Sesshu Sensei, my Shakuhachi teacher when I studied in Japan on a cultural activities visa. Iida Sensei was a second generation Shakuhachi maker by trade - I was making what I called Shakuhachis before I went to Japan, but when I saw the flutes that Iida Sensei was making, all my flutes seemed to be mere toys in comparison. Although Iida Sensei never took me on formally as his apprentice, I nevertheless managed to learn quite a bit about flutes and flute making from him, just by personal study and observation, a habit that I would later use to focus on the Pan Flute when I studied under Damian Luca.

    I didn't know you were a Cancer, Jonny Sensei! One feeling I got when I was watching this video is that there is virtually infinite adjustability when it comes to the embellishments, and also that there are so many possible permutations, combinations of embellishments out there that it's almost impossible to say that some are "right" and others are "wrong". I suppose that the ultimate test of whether an embellishment is good lies in how it sounds - if it sounds cool, keep it! Yes, I do recall the video you made before of you playing that very same song - on that very same Heartsong Port Orford Cedar F# flute too, I believe. You really inspired me with this video, Jonny Sensei - I think I will go out to my car and try to play at least what I can remember or conjure up of this song on my Palo Escrito G flute before I go to bed tonight. Thanks!

      Thank you for all your kind words! I'm betting you can play much of this by ear. Yes, embellishments being what they are, they are slightly different each time based on the venue and intent from the player.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  Год назад

      Yes they are! In the course Achieving Embellishements: www.jonnylipfordmusic.com/collections/native-american-flute-lessons/products/native-american-flute-embellishments-ecourse, which is one of the courses in Horizons Flute School, I give you a sheet to recognize this notation on sheet music from me. The course teaches you how to play them all. There is much more here than I demonstrated.
