  • Welcome to Day FOUR of our 10-day live stream event, "Jonny's Joyful Celebration!" 🎵🙌 I'm thrilled to be celebrating my birthday with all of you, sharing the gift of music highlighting the Native flute. 🎶🎂
✅ Today is going to be a bit different - we're going to get personal and share our flute stories.
I'll kick things off by sharing my own journey with the native flute, including why I started playing, the challenges I've faced, and, most importantly, what I love about this beautiful instrument. I'll also share a special flute that’s been in my collection for 20 years.
But this isn't just about me - I want to hear from you too! I encourage each of you to share your personal flute stories. Why did you start playing? What obstacles have you encountered and how have you overcome them? And of course, what do you love most about playing the flute?
I believe that sharing our stories makes us feel more connected as a community here at Horizons Plus. In these shared experiences, we realize we're not alone in our journey, making the process even more rewarding. So, let's dive in and share our love for the native flute together!

Happy Birthday sorta- and when you mentioned the date you finished that flute, and said "It was 20 years ago today". I had to sing, "Sergeant Pepper taught the Band to play! " So sad to hear about your house burning..... glad no one was hurt! And never knew you had been to Bham, where I grew up and less than 30 miles from my current location. God bless you and yours, and thanks for sharing your story.

Wanna know how I got started with flutes? My mother was the musical parent in the family, and sang in choirs, but my dad couldn't carry a tune to save his life. But one thing he could do was blow on beer bottles. And when I was just the tender age of four, my dad taught me everything he knew about blowing on beer bottles - and the rest is history, as they say... By the way, Jonny Sensei - thanks again for creating this great series of videos for the high holy days of midsummer, when the Sun is at its zenith - and it's your birthday too! That low E flute from your teenage fire days was a touching and emotional story, for sure. And I pretty much nailed the last flute, that it was a Butch Hall flute - I picked up one of his flutes at one of those Indian trading posts in southern New Mexico. That song you played on it - a very bouncy and catchy tune - I was kicking myself in the butt, saying, "Why the heck didn't I write that?"

@@JonnyLipford You're welcome - any time, Jonny! I've just barely scratched the surface, the tip of the proverbial iceberg, if you will, of my flute story, as you have probably only scratched the surface of yours in this video. For example, my music professor in high school in Tokyo, Japan played the Shakuhachi. He let me try out his Shakuhachi, and from the very first moment I put it up to my lips, I could play the instrument and get a sound out of it. Now - was that because I had been a famous Japanese Shakuhachi player in a past life - or was it just because my dad taught me how to blow on beer bottles when I was just four years old? You decide!

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story. Wow. I'm so glad you picked up that first flute, and just kept running with it! I bet it was somewhat healing to still have a flute you put together, after the fire. Special flute, indeed. Thank you for your teachings 😊

    QUESTION..for ask me anything day...
I play flutes with other instruments, so I am picky about them being perfectly tuned.
I find that a lot of my flutes tend to go "out of tune" and would love to hear what you
would have to say about that. I am thinking it has to do with perhaps the wood used,
and the temperature / moisture in the air??
Lately I've been leaning more toward bamboo flutes which , for whatever reason, don't
seem to go out of key.
This has been an on going frustration having some beautiful, expensive flutes that I
can't use because the tuning is unreliable. So....any thoughts, tips or ideas would be
greatly appreciated. Is this a problem others have had as well???
    Thanks so very much.
