You are right, handsome men get away with a lot! And Spike is very attractive. I think part of it is that he is so bad, that when he is good, and nice, that REALLY stands out against the backdrop of his faults. Like when he is concerned about Dawn, it makes our knees go weak.

So, I remember sitting there first run. I think my mouth was open the last 4 mins and back then you couldn't rewind. So, I sat there with the remote in my hand and a commercial came on and I'm fairly certain the next show started while I sat there thinking, "WTF did I just watch?? They just did THAT on tv like it was just a thing!!"
yeah, that was crazy.
