    Anya asking the questions makes a lot of sense. She has never dealt with the death of friends or family since she was first human over 1000 years ago. She was basically immortal as a vengeance demon and she lost touch with her humanity for all that time. Death meant nothing to her. But now, as a human again, she's trying to navigate this new experience. ❤

      She already had existential anxiety even with a small shoulder injury! Because of her newly found mortality too.

      In the wish she implies she has murdered people herself not just through wishes but even with a soul the demon part of her kept her from feeling emotions. I think the show implies she's thinking of all her victims in that scene

    A part of me has always wondered if a large part of Tara's power was empathic. That's why she's ALWAYS been able to connect to any & all the folks we meet.

    I've been told it's common to creak ribs during CPR. And her not recalling how to do CPR is very relatable to the audience, because so many of us have been trained often years ago, and feel like we SHOULD remember how, but probably would struggle in the moment.

    One thing that makes this episode great is the fact that in a TV show filled with supernatural things like vampires and demons her mom dies a painfully realistic and sudden death of completely natural causes. The contrast between the fantastic daily adventures and the extreme mundanity of her mom's death acts to emphasize the tragedy.

    It is the trauma of her mom dying just 40 minutes that makes Buffy weaker during the vampire fight. She just went through the most horrific experience of her life, naturally thats going to affect her strength and coordination.

    With CPR I think it’s the shock because she even says “I know this… I know this” reminding herself or reassuring herself that she can do it before she attempts it. From the losses I have experienced… none were as shocking as this one, I can tell you that each time has been different but when the loss was sudden/unexpected for me nothing made sense, I was on auto mode, my brain and body seemed disconnected.

    Everyone's reactions is about the mundane death. They are so used to the superficial stuff.
    I read that Kristine Sutherland (Joyce) was soo good at keeping her eyes open. They only had three times she blinked and they fixed it with cgi.

    Anya was a vengeance demon for a thousand years and now she’s human and has to relearn how to be human, she’s experiencing human thoughts and emotions after not caring for centuries so she’s socially awkward.

    I know that in movies they put their hands over the eyes and close them. Then they just miraculously stay closed, in real life, eyes tend to stay open. You can close the lids manually, but they rise back up again of their own accord. They tend to take on a clouded ghostly appearance after a while. Anyways yeah that's why probably because it's really like that.

    Anya dealt with death as a demon and didn't feel human emotions. Now she's a human, she is trying to understand.

    I love how your intro starts with "Tv shows" - random flex in the background. It gets me all the time lol This is probably the best episode of a tv show in the history television

    To Anya, death was but a game until she became human again and it touched her personally giving her an extremely different outlook on the whole subject with the same gentleness as a brick to the face.

    I get the feeling some of the concepts and narratives being shown in this episode were lost on you. Like for examply why Anya couldn't process this thing called (mortal) death, and why Joyce's passing was such a shock to her.

  • @METerrell
    @METerrell 9 месяцев назад

    Anya understands supernatural death at when a human is killed by a vampire or a demon. But Joyce's death wasn't the result of something attacking her so of course it would be something Anya wasn't used to. She's also not used to caring about others.
    Her saying "I wish that Joyce didn't die," is also very powerful since that's what she spent a thousand years doing - granting wishes, so she doesn't take it lightly
    Buffy's fight with the vampire being a struggle was due to the trauma. She usually has no trouble breaking down doors, but this time she did..

    This time it was personal to Anya. It was someone she knew and cared for (at least a little). That's why she is shaken up.

    I'm watching a lot of Buffy reactions, but I just had to subscribe. to another one! Would love to see you react to some other things like Weeds, Big Love, Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid's Tale if you haven't seen any of those already.

      I have seen all you mentioned besides Big Love. Weeds disappointed me after the second season. I was so hooked then it went to shit. Just being honest. There's just so much suffering in THT that I don't know if I would have a good reaction to that. Kind of a show I just need to sit back and take in. Thanks for the recommends though.

      @@BigTimeKnights Kind of agree, but I'm not really that much of a critic lol--I just sit back and let the shows take me where ever they want.

    Nice reaction, it's a rough episode... To answer yours questions, Anya has difficulty understanding Joyce's death and that is normal. Contrary to what you think, she is not immune to death for several reasons, the first being that it is possible that a vengeful demon is less sensitive to the death of others, especially when the demon kills people and that it is justified from the point of view of the victim having invoked Anyanka, the second is that after a millennium of no longer interacting with humans, she has forgotten the emotions felt in the face of death, in the face of her own mortality and the grief of those close to her. She has forgotten how to deal with them after a millennium of abuse.
    Regarding Buffy, the strength of the Slayer varies depending on her moods, when she is angry, her strength is increased tenfold or at least at its maximum, when she is sad, her strength decreases.

      Good explanation for Anya. So Buffy is basically The Hulk lol.

    anya is human now so she has human emotions, and she doesn't understand death from that perspective.

    • @BigTimeKnights
      @BigTimeKnights  9 месяцев назад +1

      I guess I did not get much of a reaction to it because it is just a normal thing to do. Glad Joss Whedon decided not to really focus on it and make it a whole thing like the producers wanted. It's just natural and even back then if you start treating it as a normal thing, society will follow in time.

    • @wildbow605

      @@BigTimeKnights The neat thing about the scene was that they chose to make it non-sensational, a tender moment in the midst of grief, and it was a much bigger fight to get a kiss into TV at that time than it would be today.
