To quote you, only this includes the episode And the reaction: "Utterly adored it."
I do find it interesting that the show has to Constantly remind us that Spike doesn't have a soul and won't always do the right thing, no matter how he cares for Buffy, he's hurting her and she's hurting him, it needed to end.
Wife was awesome. Loved that scar analogy. I was glad to see Riley help Buffy see who she is as his leaving is part of why she forgot back in season 5. It was a good amends. And he's right, we forget who we are and assume what happens to us isn't who we are and what we chose is isn't always who we are, if it makes us unhappy or we're hurting someone (like having used Spike or not been there for family like Dawn), we can always chose differently and reclaim ourselves, and restore others where possible (being kind enough to be frank and call him William).
The Xander and Anya stuff was nice. I think given what he said, maybe they should have eloped? Least it's what I would do.

I was pretty indifferent towards Riley when him and Buffy were together, but I loved him in this. He helped Buffy finally remember who she was - a hell of a woman - and it helped her to start finally pulling out of her depression. His, “The wheel never stops turning, Buffy. You're up. You're down...” is a quote I often think about when I’m going through a tough time.

As a Buffy and Angel fan, but also someone who didn't hate Riley at all, I thought his addition in this series was absolutely wonderful. That Riley should be the person to put Buffy back on track is absolutely perfect. He was always straight and narrow guy, and this 11th hour guidance he gives Buffy is pure joy.

I love how the camera pushes in on Buffy outside the Magic Box. It's a small moment, but one of my favorites. You can see it in Buffy's eyes: she is profoundly affected by what Riley said to her. It's a pivotal moment for her.
I absolutely adore Buffy's depression arc. It's so fucking well done.

Yes and I haven't seen other tv shows do much with depression to compare.

    • @barbarabaker1457
      @barbarabaker1457 4 года назад +1

@@genevieveking5078 Hmm, I'm racking my brain for specifics so it's kind of a pity I'm going to forget some here but Clannad and especially after story is the first one that comes to mind in terms of on par with this. I'd say where but massive spoilers. To this day though I debate which did it better, the movie or season 2 which is essentially the movie without magic. I like the lesson in the movie but the sci-fi element explains so much and ties the show together so well that I think I lean towards that. Hanasekeru has a suicide arc, madness, trauma all sorts of political intrigue, who knew as it started out with a silly rich girl 'marriage game's but yeah, fate of country behind that crap.
In live action, well the whole world is depressed in Dark Angel but somehow it really shows the light even with Cameron who Whedon'ed long before we had a Whedon. I also recall Eureka starts out seeming like a comedy, like Buffy but swiftly becomes something real and Henry's arc was interesting in that way. Though I feel they rushed the recovery, even though I love that episode, more clues would have been nice.
Babylon 5 and Umbrella Academy are all perspective but I'd say how they do various types of trauma is more like a present you have to unwrap and watch a few times to fully grasp.
Fruits Basket is similar although more a family show, it really isn't afraid to go for the pain and the serious turning points. There's a rain scene that to this day makes me ball. New version hasn't done season 2 yet but it better do that justice.
The Twelve Kingdoms more covers the dangers of giving into fear, blame and self pity and healing in the process. But that's if you can survive before the rat shows up. Like 5-6 episodes of Why am I watching this? And you have to be able to take in a whole bunch of world building.
I know there's more but that's all I got off the top of my head. But in terms of full, obvious depression arcs, Clannad, which is interesting for something with so much anime humor. But then Buffy starts with camp so you never know.
      Anywho hope that helps.

What I like about Sam is how she feels like a character who's went through a lot yet we know nothing about her past. The only tiny little extra thing I wanted too was the conversation between Buffy and Riley, about Joyce; because there is no way he didn't ask. But I do get that for the flow and time of the episode, they might have had to leave it as an off-screen conversation in the car.

StormWolf I disagree. He wasn’t garbage. Spike is garbage. And yes. It’s expected because he is a vampire but Riley and Buffy’s relationship was not as bad as the relationship Buffy had with Spike it was extremely destructive and abusive. Riley made bad choices and had different believes that did not agree with many and he wasn’t used to a women being stronger than him but he wasn’t garbage.

So weird, when I first watched this 15 or so years ago I was bored by the episode and with Riley. But I was so invested and interested in it this time. It was a joy to see Riley and Buffy being adults, and see Buffy feeling and giving affection and growing, even letting go of Spike in an empathetic way.

I really enjoyed your reaction. I love this episode too. Stay strong and keep having your own opinions, no matter what others say. It's each persons right to experience the show in their own way, to feel and think about it exactly as they do. We're here to experience the world from our individual point of view. On the internet there are a lot of people who think there's only one right way to see things, but there's not. Perspectives and values differ and often they change over time.
And not to forget, there's not only mind but also heart and soul, and sometimes what we like, what gives us joy, can't be explained by mind. And it doesn't need to be. You're doing great.

I think the scar was just to emphasise that like Buffy he has a dangerous job and he can still get hurt and to let you know that he hasn't just been in cryo sleep up until now. Like in the wish when Buffy showed up and she was scarred, that might have been to make her look cooler, but with Riley I think it was just making the world feel fleshed out.

None of which was Buffy's fault. It was the year he found out his mentor was a villain, he was being poisoned & experimented on, his profession was greyer than he knew and ended up quitting, his best friend was killed, had surgery, etc.
Buffy was always there for him and was a good girlfriend. She just didn't see him as the love of her life.

@@lightgivener I think you mean season 5. He left in Into the Woods (5x10).
In s5, Buffy has Riley attend her wounds, sit by her side for hours in the hospital as she waits for news about her mom, help her pack up her dorm room, babysit her little sister, etc. She thanked & rewarded him whenever she wanted to show her appreciation "you're like the god of boyfriends" "there could be outfits". They go to the beach with her friends, watch movies on a double date, go with her friends to apartment shop, attend Tara's birthday party, and he's at each Scooby meeting. She convinced him to get heart surgery and told him she needs him.
Giles was the only one she told about Dawn being The Key until Blood Ties, 4 months after discovering it. She wasn't even going to tell her mom but the brain tumor led to realizing some of it herself.

I always felt conflicted in this episode because Buffy and Spike do have some super sweet moments (I'm never over how tenderly he cups her hands after he finds out she crawled out her grave) because Spike always has loved deep but he is still a monster, and so whilst I love the more tender moments because it's nice to see Buffy have someone adore her and not be someone she chases- when Buffy breaks up with him I can't help wanting her to walk away because they've walked a good line of showing that their relationship isn't healthy even though Buffy is craving it. I love Sam because I feel like it shows what a healthy person in this world can be and that's what gives Buffy strength in this episode- maybe everything isn't doomed she's just not in the right place yet.

Does Willow contribute financially? She's never shown to have a job or helping with bills. Does she live at Buffy's for free? I enjoy the Doublemeat Palace part of the series more now that I'm older. As teens, we never think about where money comes from, and then in our 20s, we suddenly have to pay for our basic needs. It makes you appreciate what your parents used to handle.

I'm very late to this but I just wanted to put out a theory about why Spike dealt with those eggs as it seemed so out of nowhere and didn't really fit his character at that point of the series.
But in Doublemeat Palace he tells Buffy he can get her Money so she can quit her job and suddenly he's dealing with those eggs? It would fit so much if Spike, in his twisted thinking, thought this was a good way to help Buffy. It's dangerous and really not a good idea but we all know Spike's ideas are usually not great, no matter the intention.

I wish there was more in the last conversation with her and Spike, maybe him explaining why he was trying to make money, and her explaining herself better. It feels so rushed to me. He says earlier that she knows who he is, but she doesn’t explain that it really is her issue and that there isn’t anything he can do. They had such a lovely friendship at the start of the season and it’s disappointing that the writers were like nah fuck that forget about that lol. Just think the writing could have been better

The problem is that what the writers wanted for Buffy in S4 was a normal boyfriend to contrast with the supernatural high drama of the Angel relationship. The problem is the writers confuse "normal" with "boring". Clark Kent and Captain America have the same archetype, but they're not dull. It seems like the writers just missed the mark with Riley until the last bit of S5 and this one appearance.

Finally Buffy doing what she should have done since the beginning, end that disgusting and abusive relationship with Spike. Her relationsip with Riley was the healthiest, they had problems but he truly loved her and wanted the best for her. I love his speech at the end, it was the push that she needed to take the right path again.
