Great video, but there are two objections. 1. I wrote a bachelor's thesis a long time ago on the history of Southern Italy under Byzantine rule and discovered that there is not a single mention of Calabria and Apulia being separated from each other. In other words, that Lucania was captured by the Normans or the Prince of Salerno. As far as can be understood from the small amount of information, the Catepanate of Italy held the coastal part of Lucania at least until the Battle of Civitate in 1053, and at most until the onset of complete collapse in the 1050s - 1060. 2. It seems that Manuel also briefly established vassalage over several Italian cities, but I can’t say for sure.
yes Mani survived all the way to the 1821. What do you mean as deromanised? While the laconian senate towards the end of the 1600's lost power. it still operated but restricted to it's main holding of Oiytlio. But the senate still surived and the many kapantioiu/lords that ruled each area in Mani still operated under legislative bodies and still claimed descant from multiple byzantine famillies and officalls.
@@SenhorSavoi But I don't get what you mean by that?? Romioi term was still used alongiside their Maniot and Laconian idenities even after some of the sentoairal famillies such as the Stephanopoli were forced to flee to Corsica. You still have many famillies such as the Troupakis familly which appeared in the 1700's and claimed to be Paleologoi who escaped via Mystras. You even have Lascarioi and many others even after. Even today many Maniot famillies claim it. The descadants of the Maga Kommenoi with the other famillies are building a musueam.
@@gilpaubelid3780 man sorry but some of us still call ourselves romioi too. We Greeks descend from both ancient Hellenes and from the medieval Romans. Like we have terms such as romiosini and etc. The terms Romios and etc were still in poems and songs till the 70's. And deomtik greek also used to be called Romeyka sometimes. Even at state funerals the term romiosini is still used. The current pm of Greece used the term at a state funeral a few years ago. Also Byzantine Empire was the contiation of the Roman Empire.
Nice video. Thank you for showing Manuel vassaling Hungry and Galicia. Overal nice video but I wish you show Sardinia. It's said to have been a nominal vassal till the late 11th cenutry. It was most likely fully lost during the crisis on the 11th century. So probably some time post maznikert, Theirs a good video about Byzantine Sardinia on eastern roman history channel. Also you have heavily exaggerated the slavic penetration in Greece. Most fortified areas in Peloponnesus managed to hold out. Also Epirus is debatable because towards the end it was a latin state. Oh yeah you forgot to show Theodoric and Odeacer in Italy has vassals/ruling in the name of the emperor technically. Also last thing you forgot to show the Toparchy of Maina which didnt get captured by the ottomans thx to Kladas. These are all the things I can think on the top of my head now. If I remember any other missing details I will tell you. Overall nice video.
It's Roman empire not even Eastern Roman empire, that's what they called themselves until the last day, Eastern Roman empire was used by Catholics after they appointed a woman as an empress so the pope made Charlemagne king of the Franks as emperor of what it became known as "Holy Roman empire", but it wasn't neither holy, nor Roman, and not even an empire. The term Byzantine empire was used by west Europeans after 1600. Their neighbors Arabs, Turks, and Persians referred to it as Rum/Rome, and referred to the emperor as Caesar or king of Rum. The western Europeans were envious of them because they were Orthodox and much powerful than them. And the Ottoman sultan inherited the title, among his titles is empror of the Romans and Caesar, it was used until the fall of the ottoman empire in the 20th century.
For once I would love to see a video where the 927 peace treaty with Simeon of return to the previous borders in echange for him becoming recognized as an emperor is correctly depicted. Every single one has it wrong and has Bulgaria ocupying half of Greece for 50 years. You guys just keep copying one from the other and making the same mistakes. Same with Moesia not beign conquered by Tziimiskies and lost by Basil II in 986. It's so sad to see. At least you got the Komnenian period 10%% right, which is a first.
From Muslims point of view , the ottoman state was just a state of the Roman nation ,not Turks ( may be the denasty descends from Turkic origin but the nation of the empire was Roman ) we called them Rum, their language was effected by Arabic but they still Romans ( the same thing happened to Persia and they still Persian ) Until the 20th century when the European made a Turkish state by Ataturk
I am Greek, and I continue with this point of view, the Turkish and Greek people are a lie invented by Westerners, we in western Anatolia continue to be Roman, we are Rhomaioi.
Byzantines were Greeks with Roman citizenship that took under their control the Roman state during the medieval period. When Greeks took over they already had Roman citizenship and since they preserved the institutions there was no discontinuation when it comes to the state. Turks were never citizens, they were just invaders. They had nothing to do with the medieval Greeks or the state they ruled.
