As a Black woman, I’m so glad you’re not falling for it. When they start coveting and praising your beauty that’s because they’re actually trying to steal certain things from you. Don’t fall for it. Indian and Brown people have and will always be beautiful. I grew up watching Bollywood movies and this knowledge is not new to me or plenty others from different parts of the world.

What's weird is i hate how this is called the "great shift" because westerners find south asians pretty. I mean this enforces further that beauty revolves around western culture and white people. South Asians have always been beautiful. Mainstream media always portrayed them terribly. But it's so sad to see south asians going along with the great shift thing as if beauty is valid if westerners think so.

It's one of many ways so many desis are still mentally colonized. You can take the colonizer out of the country, but you can't take the colonizer out of the people's minds. The whole fair skin obsession is to look more like the colonizer. Tripping over yourself now that the colonizer finally called you pretty is more pandering to the colonizer. And every time the colonizer has liked something of ours, he's stolen it, without asking and without giving a damn that it's wrong to steal. So be ready to see colonizers spray tanning to look brown and buying the ugliest saris and plastic tikkas they can find, because they don't have a shred of actual taste when it comes to Desi culture. I'll be over here hiding my banarsis thank you. Oh and watch out for the colonizer that wants one of us as a token pet for validation. That comes hand in hand with becoming this seasons "it" accessory.

It’s so crazy bc as a black woman who grew up in the 10th district in Paris (where there’s a big south Asian population), I’ve always found south Asians sooo pretty/handsome !! like I would pass by a clothing shop and be so amazed about the beauty of your dresses and jewelry, I kinda grew up with Bollywood and had south Asians friends which helped me appreciate even more south Asian culture. My mom even used to mix west African and the south Asian hair care routine to do my hair.
It’s crazy how people can’t appreciate a race (who’s not white) without making it a trend, like ??? our races are not trends tf and we don’t need the west recognition to realize that we’re desirable

I hope it does not lead to the fetishization and dehumanization of South Asian Women like it did for East Asian women... or any kind of woman in general. But I know eventually it will and that's the concerning part of this trend.

    • @user-jt3dw6vv4x
      @user-jt3dw6vv4x Месяц назад +2

South Asian women have been fetishised and dehumanised a long time ago. This is not anything new. South Asian (specifically Sri Lankan and Nepalese) women were trafficked to US military bases after the Korean War to work as comfort women and that part of history is still very controversial in Asia and part of the reason why there is aversion towards more military bases in the region. The R&R industry during the Vietnam War thrived on the sex industry in Singapore which attracted US and other Western soldiers between the 1950s and 1970s. Singaporean-Tamil and Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) women were prominent in that industry and there's even a film from that era called "Saint Jack" in which one of the main characters is a Ceylonese woman who is fetishised for her dark skin. It's just not nearly as prominent as East Asian fetishisation.

I've come across countless girls who have been mistreated by their relatives simply because of their skin tone, not because they're not beautiful-because they are stunning! It's disheartening to see them treated poorly, and while words alone may not change their situations, we can certainly empower them to believe in themselves and recognize their worth.

"Stop placing your worth in other people's hands because it doesn't belong in anyone's hands except yours"
This line, it's so beautiful! I'm Indian and I've been told a lot of things by my relatives, especially my aunt about my skin color, ever since i was in 3rd grade (im 17 now) i have a light brown skin color, she told me stuff about how women are supposed to have light skin. I've been told to CLEAN my face. My mum and younger sister are light skinned, i took after my dad's brown skin. I've been told tons of things by others but im really greatful that my dad, mom or sister have never made me feel insecure about my color, they always told me how pretty my skin color is.
But I've been bullied in school for my skin too, i was told that im probably adopted cuz of my sister's and my skin color difference.
Because of these i couldnt help but try a lot of remedies to bleach my skin, make it lighter but it didnt happen. I eventually got mentally drained and tired from all of this and now I've accepted myself for what i am. I was blinded by the society's pov, i never realised how pretty my skin color is until a few days ago when i decided im gonna embrace every bit of myself. Because of what others thought of my skin and beacuse i only cared about that, i never acknowledged my pretty features! I think every skin color is really pretty, like there isn't any skin color that i didn't find pretty ❤ so yeah, the line that you said, it helped me fuel my self love journey haha. 2:40 Just a heads up since I haven’t seen ppl define “The Great Shift” in this way, but the phrase “The Great Shift” was essentially coined to refer to the Black guys with dreadlocks noticing the “shift” in being desirable nowadays compared to back around 2016 when Lightskin curly head (Black) guys were the “it” guys and all the craze. So it was considered the great shift for dreadheads to finally be recognized😭 Basically Darkskin dreadheads recently being admired and finally getting their moment to shine is the great shift from in comparison Lightskin curly heads who had dominated around the 2016 Fboy era.😭

Indonesian Indian here (YES, WE EXIST!!!!) and I can definitely feel it too in Indonesia. Born and raised here I've always been the subject of colourism and racism from classmates and strangers alike. I'm very lucky that my best friends aren't like that and go all out asking what's right and wrong to say both offline and online. I used to hate being mixed. I look ambiguous, I'm not Indonesian or Indian enough. It was hard to accept that I'm wholly Indonesian AND Indian and I can't separate them because it's what makes me whole. I still receive colourist and racist remarks (not on a daily basis) but now I'm more than brave enough to call them out on their bullshit and stand my ground. It is honestly sad to still see racism when Indonesians come from a diverse society just like India. The context here is that many non SA's go out of their way to neg obviously attractive people like models and actors. And I have seen them do it with other SA's too like Zayn Malik so don't act all high and mighty. And if they weren't jealous they wouldn't feel the need to keep attacking people they didn't see as attractive. And you do not fund them attractive most likely because of colourism that is prevalent back home whereas other people say it because of negative stereotypes.
My comment is about how SA's are viewed in the west not just inds. That's what the video is about they were just examples which happened to be from ind. But I can use many other examples from other SA countries. I remember people writing racist comments about actor Abdullah Ejaz and saying he is not good looking because of where he is from.

In the Caribbean tho we don't view race the same as north americans + many of the Indo-Caribbeans have actually integrated w' the other racial groups over the years so perhaps things are different compared to the USA + Canada where certain east indian ppl's/communities do not really integrate or mix w' others...

I've had people tell me that they were in awe of Martinicans of Indian origin. That made me super happy cause I've never felt so appreciated and admired. Especially when all I see is the racist comments on social media under videos of Indians just being themselves. Comments like "Imagine the smell" under the post of a beautiful Indian girl. There are a few accounts of mixed couples on Instagram. The comments get worse there. I believe that it really differs from country to country. Hey Girlie!
I just recently discovered your channel and omg why are you so damn underrated?!?!
I am a 15 year old girl from Sri Lanka
I have decently ''fair'' skin, though my skin color is just slightly fairer than the average skin of south asians
I don't have any memories of paying attention to my looks as a kid,
but when I was around 8 or 9 I started noticing things
my family would always compliment my skin color, and when I meet guests or new relatives they would always tell my parents that they are lucky to have such a pretty daughter
I didn't mind the compliments but it really bothered me how almost all the compliments I received were based on my skin color
it wasn't until I got older that I started noticing that the way I got treated differed to other girls in my family like my sisters and cousins
almost all of my female cousins are 5-8 years older than me
whenever we took pictures, they would always notice how ''fair'' my skin looks and they often compared themselves
    and something disturbing happened recently
I was talking with my 10 year old little sister and she said that one of her friends at school had really fair skin, and because of that she compared herself to her friend and thought she's ugly
another thing is that I notice her always comparing people's skin colors, so much so that I once caught her calling one of our cousins ''ugly'' just because she had darker skin
it's really sad to see that these stereotypes and toxic ways of thinking are being imposed on kids!
whenever I go out and do sports my grandma tells me that I've gotten dark and that I shouldn't go out as much
I even have a very painful memory when I hit puberty and started developing acne
several dark acne scars were left on my face and my grandma called me ugly straight to my face

Honestly I always felt robbed by our film industries for not properly representing the women, honestly even the men too. This is also why I always will dress in the way I want, a mix depending on my mood, somedays I wear a simple jeans and something comfy like a tank top, and the others I just put on a saree and feel like a diva. I absolutely agree that we should never place our self-worth or value in extrinsic things! If we have pure intentions and if we stay honest to ourselves and our roots we will always be valued by the people who actually matter to us.

Hey as a south Indian woman from India, who is actually living in india I want to add certain pointers.
Representation of Indian women in media has shifted a lot, Bollywood is not seen as a representation of Indian women or what is desirable in Indian society by anyone anymore. I live in the state of Kerala, here movies and media do have women who have been historically represented well, but unfortunately it has never gotten much attention outside the state (due to language barriers India is a country with multiple languages and culture). Now with the ott platforms gaining traction malayalam movies which show women being represented as we are, are getting traction. So generalising that the west has portrayed Indian women well while in india it's bad, is not accurate. India is a diverse country with many states languages and culture. Representation of women also vary. It's just that Bollywood is what people think of when you speak of Indian cinema or culture. It's just an ignorant take.
Secondly the influence of skin whitening and brightening creams and cosmetics have reduced significantly especially in the younger generation. Especially amongst genz. Not that it doesn't exist anymore, but now brands have been forced to change thier branding after backlash from their consumers and General change in public perception. The rise of indian beauty influencers who are dark skinned has helped change atleast some perception.
Also it's not related to this vedio but something I have observed, people of Indian origin who live outside India seem to always have a perception of india which is more regressive than actual Indian society, which does has deep rooted flaws but has changed a lot. The change is very uneven yes, in certain parts of the country we have progressed in a way comparable to the west, while in certain parts we are still living in a medivial mindset. But western content creators particularly of Indian origin tend to think we way more regressive than we actually are. It's very annoying.

Hey maryam will you talk about so-called facial proportions (upper face, midface, lower face) that should be equal to look attractive or the forehead should be comparetively large. These beauty standards sucks the reason why women are undergoing nose surgery to get a smaller nose...most Indian faces have longer midface with long noses which looks ethereal and regal but nowadays they're looked as insecurity

To be honest I wish this trend would grow higher in a sense that it can help us in many industries and different areas ( you know how soft power works, it happened to east Asia for few decades) and as for validation, I want our own culture to create validation in between ourselves, bring brown skins in the movie screen, romanticise being a brown girl, it makes me so sad when I see youg girls thinking sari, kurta is some what unstylish and prefer western clothes, we need to realise how beautiful our culture is, I feel so happy and excited when I see brown girl aesthetic in Tiktok with beautiful kurtas , lehengas, brown girl makeup, it's really amazing!!!

Dating a race is not a trend, period. I mean preference is different but being flatout racist is entirely different. As a south indian....its just upsetting because we are made fun of in our own country and then we are made fun with outside people. But on the other handdddd we dont need the west to acknowledge our beauty? Because i know my girlies are pretty and are absulote queens with our black lucious locks, I mean have you seen our dresses ? We look like litral princesses compared to whites. So i dont get it why we need their acknowledgement but what we want is the racisim to be reduced. Like you are afraid to show racisim to black but not us ? We are just a few shades lighter thats all. Better show me respect too !

Hi @Maryam, just a quick thought. As you said that the Western media and Hollywood represent us better in terms of our skin tone but I feel that they too have got it entirely wrong. I feel just like how Indian/ South Asian media has always pushed towards more fair individuals the Wester media has focussed only on the dusky skinned individuals, which I feel is just as bad. I really think that they should also be more diverse because now in most Western countries there is an ideal set that South Asias can only be dark skinned and not light skinned(you can see this from the comment sections of may fair skinned Indian Influencers). This I feel is just as bad as the promote light skin agenda. Just a reminder I have nothing against dark or fair skinned people but I feel that incomplete representation is quite harmful because it creates false narratives and spreads misinfromation. I would really like to hear your thoughts on it.
    Regards and love

      @maryam_couture  Месяц назад +2

Hey girly! I really appreciate your comment 💗
I hear you & completely understand your point. Women in South Asian are very diverse and it is important (as you mentioned) for us to be represented in every way (light skinned, dark skinned, various features, hair textures etc). However, the point I was making is that the West doesn't demonise dark skinned individuals in the way that Bollywood does.
While the West may mainly only showcase darker skinned (South Asian) individuals, that act is not present at all in Bollywood or in Pakistani TV shows. I agree that both sides need to do better but it does make me happy that darker skinned desi queens are getting some sort of representation - be it in Western media 🫰🏽✨

It feels so incredibly patronizing. I was definitely the awkward, nerdy brown girl growing up and I'd be the butt of jokes, like for example boys in middle school would ask me out as a prank. Now I had a glow up and all of a sudden guys find me attractive, and now this "great shift" became a thing?? I always knew South Asian women were beautiful-- my mother, my sister, all the women in my family are gorgeous and it's only in the past year or so that I've been made aware that we're the race that westerners find the least attractive. I was disgusted by their baseless contempt and poorly concealed racism then, and I still find it disgusting now that they're trying to say all of a sudden we're attractive, when we've always been all along. Let's just call it for what it is, it's fetishization. It's so, so patronizing that the same people who made fun of us before growing up are trying to appeal to us now. The absolute gall it takes to feed into negative racial stereotypes so proudly one second, and then do a complete 180 the next as if it never happened is astounding.

2:40 Girl they still hate us black women, and they let us know that we're in last place everyday. We just laugh and continue to be that girl, marching to our own beat. I'm West African but raised in America, so I see the race and ethnicity trend from the inside and the outside. It's just the unfortunate side effect to melting pot societies
