Knowing the challenges you all faced on the cross country section of your journey, here is a little bit of history from a one time desert traveller. Now nearly 86, it gives me great pleasure to immerse myself in videos of the outback, particularly those of the Simpson Desert. I thoroughly enjoyed your drone shots and the desert scenery in general as you proceeded southwards cross country blazing a new trail just to the east of the Hay River Track.
I certainly know what it is like to go off track and the difficulties encountered having crossed the Simpson Desert back in 1977 east to west cross country through its centre. It was a solo journey in a little LJ50 Suzuki taking 7 days and quite a
trip back then with no GPS compass only, and all against the steep face of the dunes. It was about 300km of
continuous sand hills with daily battles to be fought and won.
However, in 1985 I did something similar to yours in the northern Simpson as far as trackless journeys go, albeit a little longer in
time and distance. I departed Burketown heading for Adelaide some 2500km away. Instead of the Hay River that you used, I came down the Plenty River just to the west until the station track finished. From there I proceeded on unmarked terrain to
ultimately cross the Madigan Line which actually back then wasn’t there! You see I did the first re-enactment of
Madigan’s crossing back in 1979 so my vehicle tracks had well and truly disappeared by then.
Still heading down dune I crossed the French Track then the Rig Road, across the middle of Lake Peera Peera Poolanna
to finally exit the desert proper at Kalamurina Station after about 400km of cross country travel.
It was an extended journey of some magnitude and the many weeks spent in the desert gave me an intimacy with my surroundings that could never be achieved in any other way. Oh, I forgot to mention that I was actually walking (no backup vehicles) with a pack on my back powered by two feet and a heartbeat.
You certainly had a convoy of fabulous vehicles and you made me feel envious of the technology available today. May you and your team have many more memorable Simpson Desert moments.

Denis Bartell sounds an amazing journey. Just contending with the Simpson challenges when on your own would be difficult to comprehend. How did you manage the basic logistics, like water? Food drops?

You don't have to travel to Australia(although i sure as hell want too). I been urging to go wheeling recently, so i bought a cheap 1999 Lexus LX 470, got a bud of mine and we went across the country visiting multiple locations that we only dreamed off. WE made it a point to go into locations where it would be impossible for a regular car to get too but not impossible for noobies to get into with a 4x4. I had the time of my life and saw views that were breath taking. Just get up and go!!!

    Sean and Graham.
In 2005, I had traversed a lot of places around the Simpson Desert. Best one was 2006 when we came down from Lindsay bookie camp and where the hay River actually stops which is the largest clay pan. We did follow the hay River Road for a little while but then we went GPS cross country between the sand dunes and the idea was to follow the shot lines and the airstrip which is closer towards Queensland border and the expedition drawings of Wells which have been kapt over. Sometimes the shot line goes up the side of sand dunes on an angle but when you get to the top you were following it all the way along yes there are some massive washouts which means we had to drop down and go back up again on the sand dune. There were times when we followed in between the sand dunes quite a bit because it was like freshly mowed grass. Then we went to the famous Queensland Northern Territory South Australia stick in the ground.

Amazing tip on the mirroless camera by Graham. Its the very best for people on the move or in the climate. No moving parts. No mirror to break. Self cleaning. Sony is the top but very expensive, I went naturally with a olympus omd just because I learned photography with my mom's 35mm om1, and it turned out to be perfect for what I would actually make use or it for. A backup for my phone shots, when I have more time to prepare the shot. Get a TRIPOD too, different capturing worlds. A mirror less sensor will capture just as much light and detail if you give it more time. But yes Graham is also right about the negatives, or so to speak. Full frames actually really make a raw file with very complex algorithms who can mimic quite perfectly negatives. That's where you gain more in post processing like in film photography. People don't realise but TV and movies have HUGE LIGHT AMOUNTS on their subjects to get that amount of detail. It is then captured in lower light levels to reveal the clarity. It's all mostly done in post processing. Photographers and videographers are mostly computer geeks now lol, it takes HUGE amount of time to finalise the projects, its too easy to capture nowadays and time consuming to edit with a personal touch. Before everything had to be done before the final capture. Now its the opposite almost. Thats why you hear a calvalcade of camera mechanisms at those presidential speeches lol. They just shoot away everything and then spend hours looking at it.
    So its
Phone: Quick, ok quality, water resistant/proof
Mirrorless: On the go, good quality, can be very resistant and some water-resistant, mimics well film photography
DLSR full frame: Long to setup, perfect quality if good tools and knowledge, extremely fragile to environement and must be cared for, expensive but is the true offspring of film photography.
I would use my phone in a kayak or boat. Any moving activity.
My mirrorless around the trails and trips.
And if I had a DSLR I would capture the stars and planets at night in the desert offlanding like a badass because I'd be rich enough to afford a DSLR and a tacoma. lol

    Graham and Shaun,
You’re both a great team. I love your commentary going back and forth with each other.
Your videos just keep getting better and better. I watched your Simpson Desert with the Hema maps, Graham and this one with Shaun is a lot more interesting, I’m sorry to say and so well filmed.
Having Shaun with you is a huge bonus in my opinion. I love the other characters like Jock and Sam ( with his mo) in the other videos. Jock is a good counterbalance to Shaun. But good to see the other blokes in this video too. Shaun captures the Australian larrikin spirit of people like our beloved Steve Irwin. And your video somehow captures the colour and majesty of the Australian desert, which is no mean feat. And a real treat to see in this second lockdown in Victoria.
The Outback can appear boring but it’s an amazing experience to be out there in person. You guys are so lucky to have modern day adventures with your mates. And you manage to somehow include us in your camaraderie. It’s got to one of life’s best experiences to be out Bush with your mates. Your cameraman are awesome to say the least. The drone use is a real wow factor too. And excellent editing. Good on you.

The one thing I like about these guys is they show the capabilities of various vehicles, especially the dmax. It's a shame so many are so uncomfortable with their man hood that they have to bash the dmax for not being on 35s+ or 6 inches of lift. Yet the dmax literally goes through some pretty narly stuff. Proves you can have a practical vehicle, daily it and take it through some tough stuff. Also helpful for all those who just want to ride trails and have fun on stuff that isnt so crazy. Just shows how you can get into some fun fairly easily and be confident. Keep up the good content.
