Schipa’s passionate delivery, legato, and his high register are very moving for Werther’s poignant aria. I love the way Schipa using his mezza voce at 1:03 floats the pianissimo into an ethereal sfumato. Quite possibly the best (only in my opinion, because I prefer lyric tenors “soft singing” in this, not dramatic tenors). There are two Giuseppe de Stefano versions also performing moving versions, one 1944 with only piano accompaniment; another in 1958, that is my favorite.

it is too bad that ,at the time, singers did not make the effort to sing in the original language ! the voice is terrific, but there is NOTHING French in this specific Aria ,not a note, not an expression, not a real sense of its humanity...so special to Massenet.....i am saying this regarding the young singers who will hear it now a day !
