Clarence Thomas has received $4M in gifts. If he did that while employed in any other branch of government, he would be in prison. Alito is next inline when it comes to receiving outsized gifts and he failed to not only disclose them, it looks like he failed to report them on his tax returns, which if true, means he committed tax fraud. The Supreme Court is supposed to interpret the CONSTITUTION and answer legal questions based on THAT document. The Supreme Court is NOT there to interpret the Bible and make laws that support Christianity. This is insane.

I have worked as a Veteran who had to take ethics very seriously in the US government job I had. I don't see the Supreme Court, Congress, Senate, having to comply and skirt the rules all the time!

That is the important question, why are Supreme Court Justices accepting these expensive gifts. They don't have to. When I worked for the State we were told as part of our introduction to the job that in no uncertain terms were we allowed to accept any type of gift. I even turned down a can of soda once. So it is not hard. Honest people will do the right thing. I totally appreciate the work Marc and Democracy Docket are doing.

As a soldier working with government servants, we were all prohibited from accepting any gift worth more than $20 and total gifts from same source over $50 from anyone, government or not. We revisited this in annual ethics training and were reprimanded if not done on time. This Alito guy has portrayed an image of himself of being modererate, reasonable and mostly impartial for decades, but in extreme times (like the late 1930's in Germany) true colors tend to show themselves.

I'm so disappointed in Durbin's reaction to the SCOTUS abuses. He needs to step aside and let senator Whitehouse and Congressman Raskin take the lead.
The primary purpose of any supreme court is to *clarify the law* . NO law, as written, explicitly anticipates every single possible context. Indeed, many laws were written before many contexts even existed. So the job of any such court is to examine the whole of the law (which is why they always have an army of clerks to comb through precedents for them), so that the laws that exist can be *appropriately* interpreted and applied to the case before them. Their job is not to take a side of any sort. We may not like some of their decisions, and indeed sometimes THEY don't even like their decisions, if existing law hampers their ability to render a decision that makes sense. But that's when they can recommend to legislators that there are weaknesses or awkwardnesses in the existing law that get in the way of sensible, fair, workable, and just rulings. Not just from the supreme court, but from all lower courts. The ball then moves to the legislators to draft new legislation that will work better. Again, that's why I insist their primary role is to *clarify* the law, and not just to "decide" on things. People ascend (or at least in a sane world they do) through the legal system by the quality of their written decisions, and those who make it to higher circuits are, or should be, people who explicate clearly how and why the law was applied THIS way in THIS case. In effect, a SC justice's job is to make the job of everyone below the level of SC (both lawyers and judges) *easier* by weaving together a clear and coherent picture of how the law works, and is to be applied. The intended response to a SC ruling should not be "I agree" or "I disagree", but rather "Ah, now I get it".

I am reminded of an old friend (now deceased) who was a district court judge. He would never allow me to even pay for a lunch, because I was a businessman and someday a case involving me or the business might come before him. I am no billionaire - he had more money than me, but he would not take a dime because he was honorable.
