Mertz has taken a massive step forward this year, however due to inconsistent wr play and an uncharacteristically bad o-line(evidenced by 2 total rushing yds vs illinois) he is being dragged. Sure he struggled last year but he does not deserve the blame for this year.
Exactly. In addition, to really be a successful QB at WI a solid running game is needed, and that just hasn't been the case this year to date. That coupled with the WR and OL issues gives him little to no chance. Mertz has really been fine this year. Perfect? Of course not, though I feel that is the bar some have set for him.
Not only is he a turnover machine, but I swear every time he does it is at a pivotal moment in the game. I'm pretty sure a majority of the time he through an int it was either in the red zone or with only a couple minutes left in the game. He's been extremely frustrating to watch and I just hope he can get out of his funk in whatever way possible.
Nah, Wisconsin is just a dogshit program that can’t even develop a multi year 5 star talent at qb🤓😂. Mertz is looking like an nfl pro under Florida’s offense.
Let's see how he does under Jim Leonhard. I believe the way Paul Chryst coached him (magnifying each time he did something wrong), Chryst turned a highly confident player into a QB who is afraid to make a mistake. Mertz has all the tools to be a big time QB so let's see if he flourishes under Leonhard.
I think Mertz needs a team with better receivers and a philosophy to let him sling it. Wisconsin was such a weird situation. The Badgers wanted a great QB to reach the next tier of college football, but they just weren’t ready to commit to that style of offense yet so every mistake was magnified. They had one foot in and one foot out.
I respect the kid for going to Wisconsin. Everybody doesn’t wanna go to the same 5 schools year in and year out. That’s why we keep seeing the same damn schools in the playoffs every year.
Billy obviously seen something in him, he doesn’t want a super flashy qb who’s supposed to put the team on they’re shoulders, he wants a all around well oiled machine with a qb who’s able to just make the check downs and get first downs. I feel mertz can do just that, plus he’ll have a much stronger receiver core at florida along with a much more talented offensive line! Not saying we’re gonna win any championships but we will do better than last year
I think he'll be different under Jim Leonhard. I used to think the same way, but the way this season started, he showed improvement with a different QB Coach. Now that Chryst is gone, let's see how he does with a different head coach. You may have to make a retraction to this video later. And keep in mind, I have been one of Mertz's harshest critics on Badgers pages in the past, so I've turned the corner on him.
Mertz has no pocket awareness. Unless he is given a huge amount of time he gets sacked, or throws picks. Wisco needs amobilevQB who can run because the O line is not always going to succeed. This year, he started to stink again but a lot of I has to do with a horrible O line and midget receivers who don’t catch, fight for the ball, or fumble when they make a catch. The past 2 years on him. He sucked. This year a bad team is making him look worse.
Mertz is elite playing on Florida currently. PC is a terrible OC, can't develop QB's, and the system is garbage run run pass long attempt and most likely a sack, incompletion, int, and then punt if not a TO.
What happened? He went to a system that is centered on running the ball and pass plays are dependent on the defense going all in on stopping the run, not necessarily stand alone plays that scheme guys open. Secondly, the offensive line has deteriorated since Mertz got there to the point they can’t even run the ball anymore. Third, play calling has been terrible. Fourth, the coaching staff hasn’t developed his mechanics hardly at all.
To be fair to him he lost his QB coach after his first year. I don't think Chryst had the time to really develop the QBs. Not replacing the QB coach may be the biggest problem. His arm is capable, but her makes mistakes under pressure.
The fall started with not going to Notre Dame. He would have been the starter on a better team. Better because with him I think they would’ve done better.
Danny Davis, Kendric Pryor, and Jake Ferguson. Shit Ferguson was one of the best TE in college football also danny davis was a 4* recuit he had these 3 guy his first 2 years and couldn't do anything with them but over throw them. Hey why doesn't this guy add that mertz spent more time working on his logo in the off-season then trying to get better.
Yeah I’d take this one down there Scott. 17 TDs 6 picks so far this year. Statistically the 3rd best QB in the big10 and 22nd nationally.. the numbers speak for themselves, far from a bust.
Big fan of your channel and really enjoy watching your videos, but I am sorry to say your “Wisconsin was a bad choice for Mertz because he has nobody to throw to” take is just a flat out lazy and uninformed argument. The truth is Mertz could have thrived at Wisconsin, but simply was not good enough. Russell Wilson had the best year of his collegiate career under Chryst and this system. Sure, he was a once in a generation type talent, but Chryst also turned no name players like Scott Tolzien, and Joel Stave into pros. He also turned lesser-known recruits such as Jack Coan and John Stocco into solid game managers at the collegiate level. Also, your argument that he did not have guys to throw the ball to does not add up either. Jake Ferguson is playing exceptionally well for the Cowboys. Guys like Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor were key play makers for Wisconsin’s 2019 Rose Bowl team. Chimere Dike has emerged as one of the top deep play threats in the B10. Curious, did you watch many of his games? It doesn’t sound like you have as you merely reference his stat lines and make no mention of his numerous, unforced mental errors. Bad fumbles costing them games, sliding before the 1st down marker, flat out missing wide open targets, and repeatedly playing his worst ball in the biggest games. At some point, you have to stop blaming the coaches or the program for these failures. If he just makes the easy plays, the plays an average B10 quarterback makes, Wisconsin wins the West Division in 2021 and 2022. This is my personal take; I just don’t think he is smart enough to run a complex pro style offense (remember when he dropped the mayo bowl trophy?).
You are exactly right. This bum has never watched a full Badger game with Mertz. Your points are what many "pundits" like this clown never watch. Mertz is so consumed with his brand that he forgot how to play football OR is too stubborn to really listen to the coaches and correct his mistakes. Mertz has never improved over 3 years and now he wants to go to another school. Well good luck with that son. You are maybe a DII QB, but no big time D1program will make you their starting QB.
@@goodcitizen6185 Thank you for the kind words. I have to disagree with you on a couple points. I don't think he was stubborn or mentally preoccupied with NIL. All the coaches and players love him. I just think he's dumb as rocks. Also, he improved across the board this year, just not enough to make him a good QB. This puts into perspective just how bad he was in 2020 and 2021.
The Penn State game where they were trying to give the game to the Badgers and Mertz tripped over his own feet and threw interceptions made me throw up.
As a Wisconsin fan, pocket passers just don't work very well with our style of offense. Wisconsin o-lines primarily specialize in run blocking and tend to do it very well. Wisconsin's offense does best with a dual threat quarterback. Russell Wilson succeeded at Wisconsin without any notable WRs or TEs because he had a great o-line, great running backs, and teams weren't able to load the box and beat us because of the omnipresent threat of Wilson breaking containment for a big run. Of course, it also helped that Wilson could throw a ball with laser accuracy in addition to being fast as lightning. Wisconsin would do better with a DT QB who gave the Badgers a rushing threat at the perimeter even if he wasn't the level of athlete that Wilson was.
As a Wisconsin fan whose memory is clearly longer than yours, Wisconsin has done just fine with pocket passers and has a notable history of them. Bollinger, Stocco, Donovan, Sorgi, Stave, Hornibrook, Tolzien... None of these guys were 'dual threat' players. They were more or less mobile, but none were truly dual threat. They won Rose Bowls, won the Big Ten, blah blah blah. They were all successful QB's and many went on to the NFL to be longtime backups. Sorry, if your idea of "what we REALLY need is..." and you follow that up with "NFL Super bowl winning level QB's!" then you'll be waiting a long, long time. Do dual threat QB's help? Well... sure, because they simply add a different wrinkle. But you don't have to be truly dual threat, you simply need someone with some mobility to scramble when able or to make some guys miss to extend plays. Dual threat implies someone is just as likely to run as they are to pass. Mobile is really what Wisconsin has needed, because Mertz is NOT mobile. He has had a couple runs, but he lingers in that pocket and can't slide around to buy time at all with his poor pocket awareness.
Some background and a correction to your video. He went to the feeder middle school to BLUE VALLEY NORTHWEST, he was behind Jacob Clark (a TRUE bust [Started as a sophomore in high school at NW and then transferred to Rock Wall Texas, went to Minnesota, got stuck behind Tanner Morgan and now transferred to MO State to play for Bobby Petrino]) and decided to go to miege instead to get a chance to play. He was behind someone at miege and transferred to BLUE VALLEY NORTH where he lit it up. I played football at NORTHWEST and was on the team with Clark. NORTHWEST also lost J. Michael Sturdivant (Cal). Mikey Pauley (Nebraska walk-on/baseball scholarship) was the QB for NORTHWEST who won the state championship in 2021. The prior NORTHWEST coach was so bad, that all the talent left to play somewhere else. 5 power-five players on one high school team and 3 of them left to play somewhere else. Video breakdown: 5 minutes of intro and high school story (worth mentioning, but spend like 2 minutes on it because the main point of talking about that is he was a big riser with offers from top schools). 5 minutes of recapping his Wisconsin career. This is where the analysis should be happening. What went right, what went wrong? Show him making bad decisions (INTs) and why they happened. Show the playcalling being bad. Show SOMETHING. Don't just tell me what the outcome of the game was for Mertz and UW...if I wanted to know what happened in every game he's played, I would go look at box scores. Then you spend ONE MINUTE getting to the actual point of the video, what went wrong, and it's five obvious things with no video to back it up, no actual analysis, and no real thought put in. This video was a boring disappointment on a topic that could be really interesting. I'm sorry this comment is so harsh, but I hope there are some constructive points because you pick really interesting video topics and I would want to watch more if there was some substance in the video.
Lots of talent but erratic. Doesn't seem to thrive under pressure. Can make good throws and is a modest guy. Chryst did not develop him the way it was expected.
Another thing. Enough with the term “development.” CJ Stroud or all the Alabama QBs stepped right in and were good. Mertz shouldn’t have to be “developed.” He’s not good. Fact.
Year after year Wisconsin fans bitch about the quarterback and get excited about the next recruit just to be dissapointed again. Maybe WI just isn’t a great passing team?
I think it's a pretty numbskull comment to make that Mertz's issues can be blamed on going to a school "not known for developing QBs". The incompetence of the OC did the boy no favor but only he has 95% control over whether he throws picks or not.
Paul Chryst could barely develop a thought, let alone a QB. Mertz may end up being much better the remainder of this season and next now that Chryst is gone. His first start against Illinois was both great but a disaster in terms of his future. Every game would be compared to that one. Every interception building up, every incompletion building up, and every loss building up into a letdown due to the success of his first start. The Chryst offense was built on sustaining 10 to 15 play drives behind a dominate offensive line and running game in order to score. Over the past three seasons the Badger O-Line has been pedestrian at best and this season they are perhaps the worst in many years. When they aren't getting beat they are holding. 8 yards rushing against the Bert led Illini is a disaster for a QB running an offense built on the run. I wish the best for Mertz and hope he can pull a Lloyd Christmas and totally redeem himself. Speaking of Chryst, did I mention he was 0-5 against OSU? How about 0-3 against Penn State? How about .500 against Northwestern? Zero B1G Championships, Zero Rose Bowls, and a 41% winning percentage against ranked opponents. Ufff.
He is a Florida gator now and will be asked pass more and make plays will have to see how he does from what I've seen from him not to excited about him..
He simply never developed. He's wildly inconsistent and reverts to the same mistakes he made his first year, which shows his game hasn't matured at all.
I'm a Seminole fan and e play the gators every year..Wisconsin is not a team to try and be a real qb unless ur skilled like Russell and can move around in the pocket and throw in the run. I think he will have a bounce back year with the gators because they have more talent at WR. His interception to td ratio was not bad but the td ratio is just low as hell as well as the yards..I don't really watch Wisconsin games but it sounds like they run the ball a lot.. u know I'm sorry he might be trash because he in the SEC and can't move around.. wish the best for the kid except against FSU of course
@@justinalley3399 you are quite literally brain dead. He’s getting sacked constantly because the o-line is very bad this year and wr’s aren’t getting open and he has showcased his arm talent when his teammates have let him show it

I feel like you can’t say mertz is a bust because he was good for his first game at Wisconsin and that was it. He never did all that great again.
I wonder if the Luke Fickell hire will help him out at all
And...now his is gone. Whose up next?
People who defend mertz clearly havent watched a single game he has played. zero arm strength, zero ability to read defenses and the worst pocket presence i have ever seen
I just left a much longer comment, but you summed up what I said in a couple sentences, lol. Agree with you 100%.
Update?
Wisconsin hasn't had solid QB since Jack coan and that's sad
Didn't Mertz beat him out and cause coan to transfer?
coan got hurt and mertz took the spot for 2020, so once coan came back in 2021 he just decided to leave instead of trying to win the spot back
@@nohandles67 you guys are both right. I totally forgot about that
Video breakdown: 5 minutes of intro and high school story (worth mentioning, but spend like 2 minutes on it because the main point of talking about that is he was a big riser with offers from top schools).
Started slow, ending slow.......
Lots of talent but erratic. Doesn't seem to thrive under pressure. Can make good throws and is a modest guy. Chryst did not develop him the way it was expected.
A little premature, eh? He’s having a good year.
Another thing. Enough with the term “development.” CJ Stroud or all the Alabama QBs stepped right in and were good. Mertz shouldn’t have to be “developed.” He’s not good. Fact.
Just kidding.
Year after year Wisconsin fans bitch about the quarterback and get excited about the next recruit just to be dissapointed again. Maybe WI just isn’t a great passing team?
Las Vegas Bowl, not Sun Bowl
He is friggin terrible !
Transfer to Kentucky
Cohen will make him a first round pick
Yah, paul as coach was clueless never get a sentence out mouth made sense
Update on mertz, Wisconsin is the problem not mertz
😂😂😂
🐊🐊🐊🐊
Oof this video didnt age well. Literally had the best passing rating in the nation last Saturday 🤣
Liked what I heard . Go gators gatornation for life
he should have just went to Minny
He simply never developed. He's wildly inconsistent and reverts to the same mistakes he made his first year, which shows his game hasn't matured at all.
Mertz isn't exactly a bust he's just mid at wisconsin
And the rise once again lmaooo
I'm a Seminole fan and e play the gators every year..Wisconsin is not a team to try and be a real qb unless ur skilled like Russell and can move around in the pocket and throw in the run. I think he will have a bounce back year with the gators because they have more talent at WR. His interception to td ratio was not bad but the td ratio is just low as hell as well as the yards..I don't really watch Wisconsin games but it sounds like they run the ball a lot.. u know I'm sorry he might be trash because he in the SEC and can't move around.. wish the best for the kid except against FSU of course
As a Florida fan....thank you for believing in our QB, hard to trash talk now
@@tudordominic1994 😆 🤣 u funny. 😆
Mertz is a horrible quarterback he always screws up
Too many excuses. He's just a bad quarterback. He basically got two head coaches fired .
I guess going to a bad system means you’re a bad quarterback
Well turns out Wisconsin is full of jackasses, his doing great when his actually on a team
Should’ve made this last year since this year he’s been playing great. Stats don’t show how good he’s been for the badgers this year
Cameron Kokesh he has not been playing great clearly you dont watch games
@@justinalley3399 you are quite literally brain dead. He’s getting sacked constantly because the o-line is very bad this year and wr’s aren’t getting open and he has showcased his arm talent when his teammates have let him show it
Dude should have never went to Wisconsin, that was his fault.
Mertz just had a great year as a gator. I’m glad he came here
Lol😂
Anyone else (besides the AD) notice that no matter how terrible Mertz played, Paul Chryst wouldn't bench him?
Who do you bench him for? The Badgers aren't exactly flush with options at the position.
@@rhackler you make a good point, but I think you pull him out for a series anyway after a terrible lapse in judgment.
Russ
Dude, loose the music
What has went wrong for Mertz and Wisconsin over the last few years?
He really had no skill positions on the outside. Paul Chryst is a good coach just not the best coach for a QB to develop.
I believe he will transfer to Minnesota.
Paul Chryst happened…. Every QB he touched turned into nothing and regressed never progressed
Hes mid
Big part is the lack of any decent receivers. They got nothing.
Who should I do next?
VIDEO IDEA: UCLA is criminally underrated. Or just anything positive about UCLA pls. Lmao!
Do the most elite true freshman wide receivers
You should do what happend to Agiye Hall and Jahleel Billingsley to Big time bama recruits doing nothing at Texas
Iowa QB Spencer Petras. Downfall or Dumpster fire of Northwestern. San Jose state they are 3-1 could be sneaky good this year.
South Alabama's successful season in 2022
Never developed as an elite quarterback. Wisconsin always misses one
Maybe it was the coach 🤔
This aged horribly 💀
Lol
This is a lame video because Graham Mertz has been extremely solid this year.
....and then November came.
This didn’t age well. Damn lol
Lol
Repent of your sins and trust in Jesus you will be saved love yall
Yes you are exactly right but will it help Graham cracker Mertz play better as quarterback
He's in the transfer portal now. Good luck at Austin Peay Grahm Cracker Mertz.
Florida fans how we feeling? 😅🐊🟠🔵
Depressed
We are central Florida fans now
@@generalfreddie That'd just be you fair weather guy.
I guess while see
F*cking great! 🐊
Transferring to a team that’s still building a o line wasn’t a good decision for his career. The defense he’ll have to face every week will be a problem for him. Off the top of my head I can’t think of a pocket passing sec qb. They mostly duel that scramble and make throws
