Our 2-1/2 old dog is still afraid of strangers, and even people she should not be afraid of,, such as my son, who comes to visit often. She barks at him when he arrives, seems to be afraid, stairs at him for awhile, and after finally after about 1/2 hour, seems to come around to approaching him by sniffing his foot. She is also afraid of a neighbor who comes often and brings treats. She will not let this neighbor ever approach her.
My texas heeler is afraid of EVERYTHING and has been since he was a puppy. I have tried to build his confidence for 4 years. Christmas eve I got my dream dog, a standard poodle puppy. she is confident and take charge and has helped him already. Now I just have to train her lol.

Awesome. I'm glad to know I'm doing the right things with all my pups. When they get nervous, I put my hand on them, or if they let me pick them up. Tommi (3 mo 35 lb), Codi (3 yo 65 lbs) Felix (6 yo 18 lbs). Currently Codi and Felix hide behind me when they get scared, then poke my bum, to let me know they are scared and we turn around and walk away. When Tommi gets nervious she holds the leash, and so I stop and let her sniff around and if she looks towards the direction we came from, we start walking back. I let her call the shots.
Oh thank you so much. I have adopted a fearful dog that is scared of everything! I mean everything. I have two different harnesses. She likes them and she likes her flat collar. But she does not like leashes. I’m taking it slow . I have to Carry her out side to potty but she will come in by herself. But she runs inside. She’s scared of the outside AC Fan. She is a labradoodle/ Shepard mix and her name is cookie

We have a 5 month old boxer/shephard/cattle dog mix. She seems to be pretty afraid of dogs barking particularly when she can't see them. I may try using sounds over a speaker I can control and creating a positive association. I think ill try doing that with smoke alarms and fireworks as well especially since 4th of July is right around the corner.
Hi there, this video is great! I’m having trouble with finding resources for dogs who are afraid of family members. My new dog is terrified of my husband. Which class or resources would you recommend?

Our new puppy loves being beside us on the couch or getting pets on our laps, but when we’re standing/walking around the house she runs away from us and hides in her crate or behind furniture. Trying to teach her recall is tough!
It can be hard to teach timid pups but if you take it really slow and make sure it's positive, you'll get there. Try not to push her too fast with coming to you or getting close to you. She needs to learn how to trust at her own pace.
I have a mini Aussie got her past most of her fears by gradually exposing her from a distance, than closer. She is able to trust me now to do things I ask of her. I took her to a group of dogs in training we just watched from a distance, next week she asked to join in with them. It’s been my way of exposing her to those boogies. Trainer told me to skip over the beginners class since she is doing great I have been working with dogs and horses for forty plus years, but this puppy is remarkable in her progress, especially from the shy puppy I got in the beginning.
Hi there! I have a 12 week old Elk Hound/Gold retriever mix. We brought him home this past Friday. I’ve owned a dog previously but never a puppy I’m super lost on where to even begin. He is slowly opening up but other than that very shy and wary of me. He isn’t potty trained either so it’s been a lil rough. Is there any sort of guidance anyone can give me? I want to give him confidence and train him as best as I can!

my poor pooch is afraid of nearly everything outside the house. other dogs, cars (although she rides in them just fine), the mailman, loud noises, my morning alarm (although her reaction might not be so much fear as it is trying to follow suit with the alarm, it's very hard to tell early in the morning cus i've had no coffee yet.
Hi! My new puppy is 11 weeks old. He’s been with us 5 days. He was left with his litter mates in a storage tub in a field. They knocked it over and were abandoned. 😕 His foster mom had him for about a week before we got him. He’s scared of his shadow! I think it’s starting to lessen but he was petrified the first night outside!
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad all the pup's were found and you now have one to help and care for. Take it super slow. It may seem painfully slow at times but going at pup's pace is going to be your best bet.
So, he’s 14 months old now! And 75 lbs. 😳 He’s much better and even barks at the door sometimes. 🤣 He’s still sensitive to loud noises but overall, he’s much better. Thanks for letting me share! 💜
Hey so I live in the city and just got my 9month old puppy 2 weeks ago. She’s really scared of people and loud noises which is super difficult to deal with since those things are everywhere when we step outside. She doesn’t take treats when scared and I live in an apartment. (She loves and gets a lot of confidence around other dogs) Do you have any tips to help me out?
Mine is almost 7 months old but her case is quite similar to yours. I contacted a trainer and he suggested me not to feed her for a day so she could get her doggie instincts reactivated (looking for food to survive) and focus on something different. This makes it easier for her to focus on you during training and could make it easier for her to accept treats or food outside. I did practice a few training exercises for 2 or 3 days without taking her out for walks and I saw some progress when I finally took her outside. Still working on it but we did contact a behaviorist and a trainer because I had no idea of how to help her and I did get very anxious during the walks because she would get reactive with almost everything (not the right energy of course). 😥 Also working on that one by the way but as Michele says, it takes time and patience.
@@dianaholistica Thanks so much!! I'll try that out, it seems like it would help. Do you know of certain exercises that would help specifically for building confidence or just teaching new things in general? Also, if you have any video/ channel recommendations that have helped you an yr pup that would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry if not, what you wrote already was amazing advice!!
Well, just got my puppy from a coworker and it’s barely 7-8 weeks . Already have a rough time because I found out he was already given up 4 times so now he has separation anxiety. It’s night 2 and he’s doing a little better than last night. Still don’t know what to do because it’s my first puppy after my other dog pass away.
oh my gosh, I am so sorry this poor little pup has been through so much in such a short amount of time before coming to you. I hope all works out for you and pup! My dog Sammie (a Mi-Ki weighing 6lbs) is 2 years old. He had a couple of fears as a pup (of bathing and of walks outside) and overcame them with positive help. Suddenly 3 weeks ago, he reversed his normal behaviors and became afraid to go up the front step to the house after a walk, then he was afraid to go up our carpeted stairs and within 2 days was afraid to leave a carpeted floor and walk on our tile and wood floors...finally, he has become afraid of crossing a threshold (wood or marble) into any other room. We ruled out physical causes like pain and even the possibility of nails that are could be too long. We tried non slip socks on his tiny paws...nothing has worked and he always hangs back on the hall carpet reluctant to walk into the kitchen or family room. I’ve begun having treats available for the trigger thresholds (literally) and he will eventually take them but this is so sudden and so distressing. We are not aware of any negative experience that may have precipitated this behavior change in Sammie.
We love that you've got your puppy detective hat on to try and figure out what's going on. We hope the information in this video can help you and Sammie with these sudden fears! Hang in there and continue to take things slow.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Here is an interesting thing...my dog Sammie was at home with a known and loved pet sitter while we were out of State and 3 days after we returned (I discovered and removed a tick from deep inside his long hair (on his face). The tick was Lyme positive after I used a Laboratory to confirm but had been engorged for 100 hrs. After removing it and topically treating the puncture wound, Sammie has abruptly stopped exhibiting his fearful and anxious behaviors...?connection. Our holistic vet told me that ticks can make animals feel odd and influence the animals’ behaviors while they are still attached.
I’m struggling with this so much! My puppy (9wks) gets scared of loud noises easily. When we tried to walk her to the front of the house. As soon as a dog barks she runs back into the house. Even when she’s in the garden & our neighbors dog starts barking she runs. So I let her go inside the house en I sat on the floor by the door. I had some treats and as soon as the barking stoped she came to sit next to me. Each time she looked at me she got a treat. But I want to go to puppy classes with her but don’t want to overwhelm her with fear of all the dogs around. Or maybe it’s because she can hear them bark but can’t see them?
When dealing with fear or reactivity in puppies, the best course of action is to identify the fear and work on counter conditioning techniques to help your puppy overcome their fear. This means we want to set up controlled training sessions where your pup can remain calm yet receive positive reinforcement when the trigger is present, yet at a distance or at low volumes. One great technique we use is to find a similar sound on RUclips and play it at a low volume while giving out training treats or kibble. When you start the sound the treats are delivered, when you stop the sound, the treats stop. If the fear is about something or someone that she is close to, you’ll want to apply the same counter conditioning techniques but at a distance that allows the puppy to remain under the threshold of fear or over-excitement. That’s where the learning takes place. For more information on overcoming scary things and working on this kind of training check out 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
I'm getting a puppy- tonight! I live in a big city and I'm worried about loud noises outside. My adult cat gets spooked by the loud garbage truck that drives by multiple times a week. Overtime, I was able to get him more comfortable by giving him snuggles and scratches when it went by, he no longer hides under the bed when it drives by. Will it be the same with puppy? Should I give her treats every time something loud happens outside?
Offering treats could be a great option! Remember that if your pup does not take the treats, she is likely over her threshold. We hope you liked this video!
I have an 11 month old Frenchie and I am trying to train him to use the doggy door but he will not.
