Making cider from supermarket apple juice

- Hello RUclips
If you follow my Instagram or Twitter you will know I've recently begun homebrewing one of the easiest things to brew is turbo cider from store bought apple juice
I got 4.5l of pure apple juice, some yeast, a teabag and this bargain fermenting bucket from amazon;
www.amazon.co....
This gave me 8 pints of cider for only 31p a pint!
We have also begun making several wines from the various berries we grew and foraged this year which I will be sharing with you as well as future beer brews
I'd love to hear what you guys thought so please leave a comment or a thumbs up and if you liked and maybe you'd consider subscribing
I also post on these platforms;

i have been brewing this way for a few years now, its called turbo cider, great way to get cheap alcohol, the flavours ya can do is amazing...cool video 👍🏻🍺
Yeah I've made a WOW (worzels orange wine) from cheap orange and grape juices too ridiculously easy and the results are pretty good 🍻
Thanks for watching and taking the time to post the kind comment really appreciate it mate 👍

Next logical step is of course acquiring a distillation equipment :-) Nice brewing Roo!
Absolutely! Although technically that requires a licence here...
Funny how world went crazy during those time. Now everyone forgot that non sense.
Indeed, hope you have a great weekend and thanks for watching 👍
So you get about 5% from just the sugar content in the juice ?
31p a pint. Can't argue with that.
A bottle of Henry Weston's 8.2 cider is now €5.20 in some off licences.
The world has gone nuts.
Pretty much but if you don't like scrumpy you may want to backsweeten it with a little fresh apple juice when drinking.
Price have increased over the last couple of years since I recorded this bit even with today's prices it's less than 50p a pint
You can easily make an apple mead or cyser that is a lot stronger and tastes delicious, a did a video showing that here:

I see. I just ordered a cider kit for €40 off a website. My first brew kit. 30 litre fermenter with some accessories. The modern kits are nice, and simplify things a bit.
@@HitchHikersBlues absolutely 👍
Should i have mixed the liquid and yeast or just left if and second what about the tops blowing off and spurting out if it’s not fully fermented ps only trued making mead did it wrong
Yes ideally mix the yeast by stirring it in if using a bucket as your fermentation vessel or if using a bottle seal / cover the opening and give it a good shake about
To prevent it blowing through your bubbler leave adequate head space at least of 3-5cm in a bucket and 7-10cm in a bottle as the tapered top has less volume
If unsure place your fermentation vessel inside a second larger bucket or tub to contain any liquid that blows through the bubbler
If you mean it blowing the tops off after you bottled it but it was still fermenting you can deactivate the yeast before bottling by adding a crushed campden tablet to your brew the day before bottling which will stop further fermentation
Most importantly don't be deterred, hope that helps 👍

If u add sugar would it big stronger alcohol %
Yes if you add the sugar at the beginning (50g per litre) it will boost the ABV from 5-6% to around 8%

Thought the tea was because he British and needs tea for any job he does
It's true that everything is better with a brew 😉
Why the tea?
To add tannin that gives that tang sensation on your tongue 👍
@@PreparedCamping thanks!
Where do you get the gravity thing that measures the percentage and what’s it’s name 😅 if you were looking for 7-8.8% what would be the best way ideally would like a medium fry but slightly sweet tasting cheeky tipple I’m
Hooked !
The gravity measuring device is called a hydrometer fairly cheap online if no shop near you sells them
Just just will finish around 5% and be quite dry so you'll need to add sugar to increase the alcohol %
Easiest way to back sweeten is add a dash of juice to your glass when drinking otherwise you need to kill the yeast after fermentation by adding a campden tablet and you can then add juice to sweeten and bottle

Could you add other fruits to make a fruity cider.
Yes definitely, best thing about home brewing is experimenting to suit your tastes 👍
@PreparedCamping thank you I'm fairly new and I've only done mead. I'll give it all a go.
I've been wondering about this for a while, Did you measure the SG at the beginning?
I can't remember but it's usually around 1050 without adding any sugar giving a cider around 6% ABV when finished 👍

😂😂😂 tell him to get the "feeling hoppy" and "Caxton real ale" kits whilst he's there
If you make them with a little less water (35 pints not 40) you get great tasting beer thats 5%+ for less than 50p a pint 🍻
Will do 😁😁😁
What's the tea for?
Does it add caffeine?
Will you taste the tea after bottling?
The tea is to help with that tang feel in your mouth it doesn't affect the flavour at all, if it does add any caffeine it would only be a trace amount

Any recommendations as to what teabag to use? Don't want to use a precious Yorkshire gold teabag if its not gonna make any difference :D

Wow!! I love cider so much but can't drink it anymore 😥 31p a pint jeez... that's very good, I hope it tastes OK Kanga? Lee
This way makes a dry scrumpy tasting cider Lee and I didn't carbonate it so its not gassy
didn't think it would be this easy, will def give it a try. where did you get that yeast packet/what other brands or types would you recommend?
I use the yeast that wilko sells which has nutrient mixed in with it
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-express-wine-yeast-compound-50g/p/0351556
But you can also buy some strains that are cultivated specifically for cider from homebrew shops and online "mangrove jacks" is the most common

Nice one, fortunately I have a surplus of apples at the moment so I might try mashing them up and give it a go as I have the rest of the ingredients. Also I don't use air locks but just put a poly bag over the top of the fermenting bottle with an elastic band (cheap skate :-) ) so when the pressure build up the CO2 can escape past the band. All the best
Cool I'm going to do a proper cider in the future like that too 👍
I use the same apple juice but scale it up and use 24 litres in a large beer fermentation bucket. Never used the teabag but I use nutrient and a universal wine yeast. At bottling I add additional 885ml of juice to the batch and siphon into 2 litre plastic bottles. Tastes just like Strongbow.
When adding the juice at the end to back sweeten with that volume I assume it doesn't disturb the sediment?
Does that also give it some carbonation?
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment really appreciate it 🍻
All the best
Roo
@@PreparedCamping It's not for back sweetening but adding some fizz. After The 1 week fermentation, I siphon the cider into a second bucket and add the extra juice at the same time, then start bottling from the 2nd bucket. You end up with sediment at the bottom of the bottles so just have to be careful when pouring out the last glass, same as with a home brew beer kit.
@@jdalt1990 I'll give that a try thanks 👍
@@PreparedCamping no probs. Remember to reduce the catbonating juice depending on how big your batch is. So for a 1 gallon batch in the small bucket, try using about 170ml additional apple juice when bottling. Much more than that your bottles will be over gassed.
Yeah exploding bottles ain't fun 😉
Why the tea?
Adds tannin that gives you that tangy mouth feel

Would adding carbonation drops make this fizzy cider?
Yes but you would need to ensure you bottled it appropriately or you'd get a messy surprise when they popped!

I didn't knew that trick with tea, need to try that next time I do a cider
👍
Does it not continue to ferment when put into the other bottles? How do you stop the process?
No as it will have already converted all the sugar to alcohol
But if you want to stop fermentation at a certain point just add a crushed camden tablet which will kill the yeast
All the best
Roo
@@PreparedCamping thank you. Gonna start trying my own brew👍
@@johnmoran7238 awesome, let me know how you get on and if you ever have any questions I'll try my best to answer them 👍
Wait no Sugar? Why do people usually add tons of sugar to it on other videos?
Also why tea? Lol don't drink tea is it necessary?
Tea for tannins that in normal cider you would get from the apple skins, sugar is converted to alcohol by the yeast so the high the sugar content the more alcohol that can be produced
Plain apple juice without added sugar will make a cider around 5% ABV for more than that you need to add sugar 😉
@@PreparedCamping ahh understood also how long can you keep it in the fridge without it becoming too strong (I don't mind whisky level, was looking at making 35% Applejack earlier but I don't want pure poison 🤣)
Also where do you buy your yeast? Been looking at Wilko's 50g Wine Yeast for £2.50 but no Wilkos in my town :(
Also saw £1.25 for 50g of Yeast Nutrient is that a good buy?
Brewers yeast is widely available on eBay and Amazon too mate
To make applejack you need to partially freeze it to concentrate the alcohol so need to use your freezer not the fridge, three quarters fill a plastic bottle with the cap a bit loose to allow for expansion and leave overnight in your freezer
Next day remove cap and place upside down in a glass leave until about a quarter has drained out as it thaws then discard the bottle of mostly ice and the glass is now applejack and probably 20%+ ABV
Just curious if you could carbonate the result for a more textbook cider ? Thank you
Yes you can, just add a little sugar to your bottle before sealing it (google the amount required depending on what size bottle you're using)
It will be converted to slightly more alcohol but the carbon dioxide will be trapped in the bottle so you'll have fizzy cider but there will also be a little bit of sediment too
Thanks for watching and happy brewing 🍻

I want to follow this way of making it but want to add sugar to make it stronger what sugar do I add and how much of it
Add upto 50g per litre can be just regular white sugar to keep cost down as it won't affect the taste too much because the yeast will eat it all and you'll get a cider that's around 7.5%
You can always add more to future batches if you decide to go stronger again 🍻
All the best
Roo
This may seem like a stupid question but is it alcoholic because some peoples recipes are just fancy apple juice
The yeast will convert the natural sugars in the apple juice to alcohol so after a week it's should be about 5% ABV buddy 👍
@@PreparedCamping thanks 👍
@@justagoose9415 Happy to help, some people find it finishes too dry but you can simply back sweeten by adding a dash of apple juice or cordial when pouring if necessary 🍻
Also would I need the airlock or could I just stab a hole in the top of a plastic container
@@justagoose9415 I use airlocks as they're cheap and reusable but if you haven't got one you can put a balloon on the bottle opening. This will expand as the yeast produces carbon dioxide so all you need to is release the pressure each day so it won't pop. After about a week you'll notice it won't expand anymore showing that fermentation is complete.
Kind regards
Roo
Is my kitchen ok to ferment ? I have used store bought yeast instant yeast but have added tea and sugar to increase strength. I did 30l without realising the weight of the thing so I put two t shirts around it and hoping it ferments

@@disgustingnoise9886 yes that's fine 👍
So I’m making 3 25l batches. Did one per day to hopefully buy myself some time of I mess it up. In the first one I may have accidentally on purpose adding probably too much sugar (2 kilos) and then added one more bottle of apple juice lol. Boy that one is having some fun reactions! What percentage is that one going to roughly end up as? I don’t have something to read the gravity. (The other two are about 1.5 kilos to 25l if you could give a rough estimate on those too. I used the same yeast you do)
@@disgustingnoise9886 generally 20g of sugar per litre will increase the ABV by 1%
Without adding sugar apple juice usually finishes around 5%
2kg / 25 litres is 80g per litre so 4% giving a potential cider of 9%
1.5kg / 25 litres is 60g per litre so 3% giving a potential cider of 8%
These are only estimates, to be sure you should get a hydrometer to take readings before you pitch the yeast and then after fermentation so you can calculate it precisely

It's safe to drink straight after primary fermentation but the flavour mellows a bit if you give it a little extra time
