The difference between Lui Kang and Raiden is that Lui Kang gives you a choice to either “live in quiet serenity or bloody strife”. Yea I don't know if I like the implications of this system. Obviously we have to wait for more info but like you said I don't wanna see my favorite characters reduced to an assist kameo.

I'm really glad they are sticking with Fire God Liu Kang as a thing, the last few story modes of these games felt like just retreading old content and I really like the idea of properly hitting the reset button and trying something completely new

@@uchihasenpai5671 At the end of 11, combined with Raiden as a way to beat the big bad Chronika. Who also just so happened to be in charge of what allows one to control time, hence why Kang here has 'created' a world.

I like already the implication that Kitana and Milena might not be enemies and instead are just sisters that love each other despite their differences. I just want happy families fighting against mean people.

@@kirbymario2633 I understand. They've been rivals for so long. I just want to move away from the story where the only reason they're enemies really is because Milena has monster parts. Kind of can be read as a disabled person being outcast for something outside of their control. Also I like seeing characters that were once portrayed as villainous being reimagined as more heroic and on the "good guy" side of things.

“Kameo Fighters” definitely sounds like what will happen to characters that showed up in MK11’s story but weren’t on the roster, like Cyrax and Sektor.

Johnny Cage getting a Jean Claude Van Damme skin is a nod to the fact that Cage was originally inspired by him and supposed to be the main character of the game series originally. That's friggin awesome.

And mk1 was originally going to be a universal soldier tie in game but they didn't want to do that so they made mortal kombat instead.
Plus they originally wanted Jean Claude Van Damme to play Johnny Cage in the movie, but he turned it down to do Street Fighter.

Kameos was the fighting system used in the challenge towers.
You chose items and they would summon a character to use a special move. Reptile and his forceball was common example.

The important thing to me here is that Shang Tsung appears to have been elevated to the position of overall Big Bad, and I am 100% here for it; Aftermath absolutely proved he can work in that role.
I dont think shang tsung is the big bad tbh. As a counter to the first MK1, where liu kang was the underdog and tsung was the boss, they make a point to show liu kang absolutely decimate tsung in the first trailer. I think they did that to bring MK1 full circle and show that shang tsung is no longer any threat to liu kang. the actual threat isnt known yet imo

To be real, I think I like Shang Tsung better as the main villain than Shao Kahn. Shao is a classic, but he is rather one note, Shang Tsung is interesting, he is manipulative and conniving, he is that type of villain who starts from the bottom and earns their way to the top.

I love that the ending of MK11 feeds into this game as a reboot. The direction they took some characters just felt fresh and was good to experience, it's really exciting!

I worry the kameo fighters are gonna sometimes cause a sort of feeling like Smash Bros assist trophies sometimes did, where people are gonna get hyped to see their favorite fighter but then get totally crushed by them basically being "deconfirmed" by being revealed as just a kameo fighter and not main roster. Hoping the system works out in a way that most people will enjoy though

@Ryan As a big Ermac guy myself, I feel that. Those both feel like characters right in that middleground where I feel like they both have a good shot at being involved in the game, but are at a high risk of getting relegated to kameo status

My favorite part was the end where Liu Kang did the kamasutra pose, which is supposed to help your mind with balance, but the animation looked like he was creating only one side of the yin-yang. He is not balanced and will not be able to see the bad that comes with his choices like he himself declared against Raiden

I love that they are prioritizing story/lore. Mortal Kombat holds the title for me as having the best single player story mode.
Max always says that these big franchises should just reboot their brand after a certain point so people don't feel this massive barrier to entry and I'm glad to see a major studio finally try it out. I love the MK franchise so I hope it pays off!
True but this is nothing new SF literally does this every game. MK has in a way since mk9 they all been way different.
@@lbady1423 SF only really accomplishes this by not giving a fuck about their lore & characterization. And yet they still CLAIM to have a "timeline" of linear events so they don't lose any fans of previous entries while they progress characters to match current trends.
What we have here with MK RE-Reboot (I'm not calling it MK1) is a rarity in fighting games (and the 2nd for this series) - a complete re-invention of the franchise, with new rules & new dynamics and yet they acknowledge the progression from previous entries.
@@carloscreative5538 that doesn’t change my stand on what I’m saying to him. Last 3 MK games shouldn’t have felt like a barrier to entry to any new player. They all were new. As far as rebrand go i wouldn’t call it that. MK just tell they story in a unique way. Like you said it maybe called MK1 but this plays off MK11 story. As we all know MK9 was called MK so who’s to say the next game won’t be MK13. With them never truly leaving the past storylines how is it even considered a rebrand in anything but the names. Regardless it’ll be a story barrier for new players. Just not when it comes to how the game plays. That side has never really had a barrier in the last 3 games of mk. As I said sf change with all games completely so it’s not a barrier for new players either besides motion inputs. As for SF story that shits fucked for ever lol.
@@carloscreative5538 SF definitely has a timeline of events. It's a bit messy, but it's there. The new games scarcely omit the major plot points of previous entries. SF is very weird in that it's told in an obscure way (the games aren't released in chronological order, despite having a linear numerical namesake (1-6).
SF 1, The Alpha series, II, IV, V, 3 series, then the upcoming 6. MK's done a better job of keeping their story linear, as messy as it is too they've been cleaning it up in these recent years. Tekken's probably the only (major) FG where the story has been consistently forward-facing.
I also think calling it MK1 is confusing, but fine. The previous "reboot" was a soft-reboot that just reset the timeline. This one reset the entire universe and therein makes sense they refer to it as "1." It's going to be wild to see what they keep naming them after this. Imagine a rehashing of each namesake and them having to add a year to it to supplement lmao. "Mortal Kombat 2 (2025)" 😂

Some things I've noticed slowing down the trailer
- It seems like Kitana and Mileena were in Edenia and not Outworld. Perhaps Mileena is now the princess of Outworld and Kitana is princess of Edenia and are perhaps in diplomatic talks.
- Scorpion and Subzero have very similar outfits to each other. Maybe signifying that they're either in the same clan, or are mutually working together.
It's also funny that Shang Tsung will always exist solely just to spit in the face of peace and cause chaos.
The beginning of Max's into is perfect for this. LET'S GO!

Imagine if they made a spin off with the Liu kang god guy and the hat guy(Kung Lao? i think.) where they level up and beat people up in a open worldish game! That would be cool. There would be Co-op, weapons, puzzles, Bosses, quick fatalities. Ugh!

we got our world restart from 11 and it is needed. The MK11 story was super fun but also super convoluted if you didnt know the lore. This is exactly what the series needs from a story perspective.

@@tugitbrothers3699 SF5 even at its worst wasn't a janky game. Even Max said it: Every concern lies in gameplay. MK1 is just playing to their strengths so far. Street Fighter and (to a lesser extent) Tekken have already covered their weaknesses. NRS at this point is basically going "trust us the gameplay will be fun too!" without showing a lick of it. And it's only 4 months out?
@@tugitbrothers3699 nah Tekken 8 is looking pretty underwhelming with the lack of content and isn’t in a mood of release anytime soon. Capcom on the other hand learnt from their mistakes and are delivering way more in their latest SF.

The Kameo Fighter mechanic can be interesting if it’s more than a character quickly popping in for an ability, because if that’s the case I can see a lot of fans getting upset about the characters they’ve been looking forward to seeing only being what is essentially the assists you’d see in the Kombat Towers from the last couple of games. And to make them apart of their own separate roster? Please let them be more than something you see for a split second every match!
They might make it something like JoJo: All-Star Battle, where every character can be picked either as a playable character or an assist character given the backlash from the community.
“Unique roster,” so it sounds exactly like that. I won’t mind it IF the base roster is a really good roster, cause then we get more characters that we wouldn’t have seen anyways, but backlash will be big if long awaited characters like smoke or cyrax are assist moves

One thing I didn’t notice at first watching this during the stream was the that Shang Tsung is the one killing everyone in this trailer. Kinda curious what that means as far as his allegiance to whatever factions that are in the game
Apparently there is no Shao Kahn, therefore Ermac wouldn't exist so Kitana's father and Edenia are prosper (maybe Sindel is also dead or cast away)

And Shang Tsung canonically got his powers from Shao Kahn
It's a reboot, it's not retelling the events of MK with twists, they likely are looking to start fresh with new rules and players. Characters can potentially exist with very different backstories, I think we should keep an open mind regarding "canon" from the last few games and look forward to new ideas.

Going off the trailer, would be kinda funny if the reveal is that Liu Kang achieved "peace" through tyranny. The one guy shown not playing nice is immediately, brutally, murdered. Kang leverages his knowledge of previous timelines to basically stop troubles before they happen, but sorta oopsies his way in to fascism.
Yeah, he should just just babality them and stuff them all into Kindergarten.

To be fair, Shang Tsung isn't the kind of guy to say 'We have our differences, so let's settle them in a friendly fight.' He's more the 'I'mma pull your soul outta your body and turn you into an evil zombie version of yourself' kinda guy. Granted, we can't glean much context from the trailer alone, but generally speaking Shang Tsung only ever considers peace if he can get something out of it that he'll later use to backstab you.
If you know that a guy has killed before and likely has every intention of killing again, is it fascism to take whatever steps are necessary to stop them? This isn't rhetorical btw, I'm genuinely asking.

I love how hardly anyone realizes the reimagined world was already foretold at the end of the Aftermath story. This might be called "1", but it really follows 11's story
Most people recognise Fire Hod Liu Kang so I feel bare minimum are familiar with the end of MK11 which already alluded to the reboot in Aftermath.

Yeah, the Kameo thing worries me too. Like you said, if someone like Ermac (for example, pick your favorite) is kameo only, that will frustrate some fans that wanted him in the playable roster. It's like before with the Smash Bros games, where you'd have assist trophy characters and that would frustrate A LOT the fans because they were not part of the playable roster. Just take Waluigi for example. So, eventually, those Kameos will have to become DLC characters. They have to.

I don't think they'd be foolish enough to put popular characters like Ermac as Kameo characters. They showed Mileena in this trailer on purpose, they know who the fan favorite fighters are. Unless Ed has somehow been able to ignore the rabid Ermac and Reptile fans that have been endlessly spamming his Twitter, they won't make the same Mileena mistake by not properly including them. Seriously, it's a big meme how much everyone wants those two back, it'd be crazy out of touch if they weren't fully playable again. I'm betting the Kameo roster is gonna be filled with 3D era characters and the less popular 2D characters (like Syndell or Striker). Hell, we might even see some characters who shouldn't be able to conically be there as part of the Kameo roster. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kombat Kids were all Kameo characters (if they aren't DLC, that is).

In some ways its a tease yeah, but if they are signing up certain characters as kameo fighters only, then surely if it was only standard 1v1, they just wouldn't be in the roster at all.

Idk how I feel about MK being rebooted again, but I really like the designs shown in the trailer. I was surprised that the game’s coming out in just 4 months, which means we’ll probably be getting a lot of character and gameplay trailers relatively soon.

Well, they did cut off support for MK11 damn near immediately after finishing their DLC. (Smash Ultimate was supported longer for comparison) So they've been working on this for a LONG time.
I mean, what can we do? At the end of MK11, it's literally about rebooting the timeline, and of course the next installment (this game) is being rebooted again.
I don't think this is a MK reboot, it just has 1 in the title because of what's going on with the story, but doesn't seem to have anything to do with the actual first mortal kombat game.
How can it be a reboot if Liu Kang starts off as a god? It's 100% a continuation to MK11. I think people are way too fixed on the "1" in the name

I have a feeling there’s going to be twists as in characters who’ve typically been bad are now good and good are now bad. Cause this is all Liu kangs creation. Imagine if Shang tsung became good and was Liu kangs understudy similar to how Liu kang was to raiden. That’d be crazy and definitely interesting.

Also look at raiden and look at the background I mean wooden home .. picking wheat .. large grasslands , horse and buggies it’s definitely not in the timeline of mk3 or even 2! Considering they just call the confirmed character Kung Lao I assume that could be the great Kung Lao in the trailer (2nd character) but everyone else as expected appears to be the modern roster of Kitana, Mileena, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Johnny etc.

I think max nailed it with the Kameo fighter stuff, I'm slightly concerned that [Your Favorite Character] could be relegated to an assist function, that could end up being the biggest point of contention with this game. Will Ermac be playable or a Kameo fighter? What about Rain? Reptile? Cyborg Smoke? Human Smoke? Kombat Kids? Tanya? Quan Chi? Havik? The list goes on forever. You know they won't have an Armaggedon-style roster with all of the characters that have ever existed, because that would be too expensive, so I don't envy the job of the person who decides what characters are playable and which ones are only an assist character.
Doubt we will see the kombat kids for now. This is pretty early in the timeline. I am worried about the new characters though with this new time line. Personally I prefer some OGs.
It is always nice when there is a new tripple AAA fighting game IP with a nice budget. They also called it 1 which shows commitment to making it a series!
I love that Scorpion and Sub-zero's outfits look similar. Nice call back to the Ninja recolors of the originals

Weird thing is it seems they may be possibly following Shang Tsung's ending as well given he seems to be the main threat and coming out of a portal, I'm thinking he may be invading Liu Kang's timeline from his own and seeking to take it over and merge it with the timeline he created.
@@NewToCool74 Entirely possible, worth noting that (as far as I understand it anyway) Shang Tsung shouldn't even EXIST in this new era if we were merely following the events of MK11 since he was killed at the end of time.

I would hope so. He's become one of the more boring characters since MK9 IMO, so this would be a 2000% improvement over any of his fatalities from the last 12 years.

Also the duality theme they had a trailer made me think the story mode is gonna be like conquest with a morality system where you choose to side with Liu kang or Shang tsung and maybe visit other realms like in deception cus they showed earth realm and Edenia
Yes I’m looking forward to this more a than any other game at the moment. Mk has just always had a prefect balance in my opinion all the combos just feel so rewarding once you learn. Wonder how much they’ll change the combat in this new one.

Looks promising. Visuals look good, Mileena is there so much less backlash, Liu is now the new Raiden while Raiden is still around (hopefully more like his 90s live action and DOTR self) and maybe confirmation that the multiverse still exists given Shang's return.
Raiden is the other hat guy standing with Kung Lao, young and human.

I'm getting the feeling the "Kameo" fighters they mention are actually our old favorites and this is going to be based around the time of the very first Mortal Kombat tournament with THE GREAT Kung Lao as our "protagonist" and dealing with the fighters or ancestors of our classic fighters as the main roster.
Would definitely be an interesting choice but not sure how well that would be received by fans lol

Got a bad feeling about this. Netherealm has slowly added more and more 'live action' features to their games over the past decade. Wouldn't be surprised if these 'kameo' characters were beloved series characters that had to be bought separately for assist moves only. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I think towards the end of the game's cycle they will have Kameo Characters become regular characters. I see this happening especially if there is no variations and gear system (so skins only). It would be similar to how many assist characters in MVC1 became regular in MVC2 (Iceman, Colossus, Psylocke).
I think the kameo fighters system is like the injustice 2 tmnt assist system. Just a hunch.
