This is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard and she does it so perfectly. She sings it like she's leaving her own note. I went out with this guy which didn't work out, but I'm grateful that he introduced me to this song.
In 1970, Nina didn't leave a note, but she did leave behind her wedding ring upon deciding to separate and eventually divorce her husband. Close enough, right? I'm sure there are other renditions of this song, but I don't need to hear them because I know none are better than Nina's. I'm sorry things hadn't panned out in your relationship. I am not in the happiest season of my own, and somehow, this gives me comfort.
many comments mentioning that they don't sing like that anymore. I think the problem is so many female singers are trying to outdo each other by trying to sing as high as they can. As If all that mattered was range! In the process they have forgotten raw emotion. Today's divas are too caught up in the technique and not enough of spilling your guts out. Obviously Nina didn't have to blast us with this song, and that's where the power is.
The tremble in her voice. She is heartbroken and leaving but still she cares enough for him to be careful about smoking in bed because she will be gone. Gut wrenching goodbye.
@frankieluvs There are very few musical legends I've seen live (Bob Dylan being one). I was fortunate enough to see Nina Simone a few years before she passed away. It was a moving experience, for sure.
@TheJazzStreet Peggy Lee did it originally. This was the first time I heard any other version. Peggy was amazing but Nina gives every song she sings a new level of emotion. I might like her version better.
I suppose the 5 people that dislike came here on accident. Beautiful song. The reason why people sound the same now is because they are afraid to use their soul to sing.
For Brian (Frosty) , who never smoked in bed, and brushed his teeth with soap, just for me, because I didn't like the taste of smoke. One evening he played Nina, how could I ever forget - this was the version, it's unmistakable. You must miss your ciggies up there, Brian?
@shaikhdishgan1 That's true , but please , this is not for all the music . For example , got to listen my last 2 albums , and then tell me if the MUSIC , does exist , still . Thanks . Andy Walker WMR UNIVERSAL
i'm trying! :) i'm a performer, and nina's spirit has rubbed off on me. i'm trying to bring back that TRUE art. where what you sang about, and the emotions you emoted were REAL and not this fake, cookie-cutter stuff. i'm trying... ;)

One of the best haunting tunes for the man who does not treat his wife right. Now a good song if you are that man. This is a great art song!
Wheneever I sing along with this song, I can't keep myself from crying. The song makes the process so poignant. such a wonderfully sad song.
I asked him who is his favorite singer and he said Nina Simone. We have been married for twelve years. We love you Nina!

My favorite, this is about leaving a codependent relationship. Sometimes you must go so they can grow.
