I adore Micheal Tilson Thomas no matter which work he's directing. I just love the way he interprets the music. Very talented person!!! And his orchestra is highly professional.
Absolutely stunning. Still regarded by many, including me, as the greatest work of the 20th century. I saw a doco on it some time ago - it demonstrated how the building blocks of each instrument, each part, are relatively simple - it is how they are put together that creates the electrifying effect of the finished product. A masterpiece that gets better every time I hear it.
Perfect blending and dynamics from trumpets at 6:25; exactly captures Stravinsky's intentions in using mid-range close harmony against a backdrop of open harmony from low pizz strings. Truly a masterclass in unconventional orchestration from the master of unconventionality himself. Not many recordings enable listeners to perceive the inner voices of this choral section, the effectiveness of which is immediately apparent upon analysis of piano transcriptions.
Watched this for a conducting class, stayed repeatedly to watch the orchestra. Great camera angles (wonderful coordination of audio/visual), and the performer's energy is hypnotic- they play like they are possessed and I wish I could muster that kind of fire within my own playing. Bravo.
Nice tempi for the first bit, but weird decisions about what to foreground, as well as the articulations.... the détaché on the oboe/bassoon countersubject in Spring Rounds is a bit weird. And the Games of Rival Tribes is the fastest I’ve ever heard it - it’s sprinting swiftly rather than heavily stamping on the ground.
Just so you know, Stravinsky HATED Disney's reduction of this grand opus to a dinosaur cartoon. And yet we (millions of children) lapped it up. A big impression.
Salonen's reading would benefit from listening to Thomas' plastic phrasing and sensitivity. Salonen's interpretation is exciting but too erratic: too fast and too slow, which comes from his aloofness, his Scandinavianism. Solti's is the best, according to my training and the CSO is out of this world.......they capture the weightiness, the heaviness of the matrifocal rite. Feminists who wax for the days of sweetness and light when the Great Mother civilizations existed should listen to the "Rite.." to experience what was really going on.

Wonderful performance. I wish MTT all the best.
Me too, he went through a lot fighting brain cancer. I hope he can still beat it after it came back.
This really is one of the great performances of this work.
i love the unique groove that this performance has!
Great Bassoon section throughout the whole piece. At 5:02 the resonance is just the best and you can hear all the parts! Love it!

Amazing performance of SFO with stunning effects on both audio and visual recording! Bravo 👏👍🎵🎶🎼
One of the best versions
The passage book brought me here and I do not regret this distraction
I LOVE the secco tone on the bass drum, though.
Wow, really great performance. What an energy!!!
Wow! At 15:45 we see MTT with total control in stopping the orchestra dead in its tracks!!!! BRAVO
Totally amazing.
Congratulations First Bassoon. Solo bassoon is very difficult. Excellent Conductor. Bravo! BRZ São Paulo State.
What a great timpanist David Herbert is! Now he is with the Chicago Symphony
Why would anyone in their right mind move from SF to Chicago?!
@@davidalderson4980 the CSO is one of the finest orchestras in the US
@@scj6693 Of course, but SF is a much better city to live in. Beautiful place.
@@davidalderson4980 mmh, disagree. i wouldn’t personally call the most expensive metropolitan area in the country “much better” to live in.
@@scj6693 It's a few decades since I was there, but I remember it being stunning.
I had no idea that Anthony Bourdain could play the bassoon.
eric egle haha
That's why he killed himself.
Yes!

Extremely impressive. Are you going to upload the second part?...
15:08 what kind of violin or viola is that?
If I'm not mistaken it's called the David rivinus viola, and yes it's basically viola with tumour
Check the history...this piece caused an uproar (riot?) in its Paris premiere.

I believe this is Michael O’Donovan playing bassoon? 1:28
No. It's Stephen Paulson. Long time Principal Bassoon in the orchestra. Wonderful player and person.
Can you say 'primitive'
стравинский потряс и дирижер потряс
Reminiscent of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story ?
What? This came out before
Of cours, Bernstein was inspired by it.

Okay, what do you have against Gimbutas?
