  • For over 50 years the Maryland State Police Aviation command has been providing MEDEVAC and emergency services to the citizens of Maryland. This video montage is a tribute to the amazing men and women who serve in the Maryland State Police Aviation Command and first responders that watch over us every day. They are our modern day guardian angels. This video project would not have been possible without the express permission of the Maryland State Police and the University of Maryland Medical Center as well as the help, direct support, and encouragement of my friends, colleagues, and family. I want to personally thank everyone that made this video possible, without you this would have only been a forgotten conversation.
    The music in this video is a Hans Zimmer piece called "Lost but Won". I don't have the Master rights to this video but Watertower music said I shouldn't have a problem using this song if I don't monetize this video.
    Thank you so much for watching and I hope you enjoy this video.

    My Dad (RIP 2021) was a medevac pilot and stationed for the most part at Frederick flying Trooper 3. After working the road starting in 1963, he began his pilot career in the Bell Jet Ranger in 1975 and went on to the Aerospatiale Dauphin in 1989. He retired in 1990 and flew as a civilian pilot until 2000. He did not get the opportunity to fly the AW 139. He was an outstanding pilot. The MD Aviation Program is the absolute BEST. I am so very proud of my Dad and his accomplishments during his 38.5 year career with the MD State Police. Thank you all for your valuable and life saving service ! 💛🖤❤🤍 (P.S. Love the Hans Zimmer music - his music was a favorite of my Dad's. 🥰)

      j_m_o_n_y for the Maryland State Police you’ll need to be a Paramedic and become a State Trooper. For civilian Medevac most places will require you to be a Paramedic with a minimum of 3 years of experience on the road.

    Entertaining video, and MSP serves as the pluperfect example of how every state should utilize police-based aviation to best address the needs of every call for service. That is, life always comes first. Problems is, specifically regarding the HEMS role, the United States continues to operate under an outdated, inefficient model designed to quickly deliver the patient to a trauma specialist instead of vise-versa. That wastes precious minutes, and there aren't many of them to spare in scenarios that warrant a dustoff to begin with.

    So how does that work? If the pilots are flying a state police helicopter and im assuming they get paid by the state for the flight hours, then how are they not state troopers? I mean yes they might not have law enforcement training but is that a requirement for the job they are doing?

    • @yellowthunder92
      @yellowthunder92  3 года назад

      The Pilots are Civilian employees of the Maryland State Police, they carry MSP ID's that say "Civilian". Kinda like fancy buss drivers that get to fly fancy helicopters and get a type rating too. Oh the pilots have to go through a entire Polygraph sessions. MSP wants well qualified and skilled pilots to fly the complex aircraft that they employ but also understand that it would take several years build up a Trooper pilot with the experience some civilian pilot would already have.

    Does anyone know how hard it is to be a paramedic on the helicopter

    • @yellowthunder92
      @yellowthunder92  7 месяцев назад

      The two biggest prerequisites is get a Paramedic Certification (just over 1,100 hours of school) and become a Maryland State Trooper (6 month academy with a year working the road). Mission wise they need to be very knowledgeable, good with critical thinking and make important decisions on the fly. They can't be afraid of heights or if they're afraid of heights they'll need to find a way to deal with it while hanging off a steel rope from the aircraft. With all of that they're a Trooper which means they have additional responsibilities to tend to as a Trooper.

    • @DerekCosner
      @DerekCosner 7 месяцев назад

      Because last year I was thinking about going to school to be a paramedic on the helicopter but I got a tour of trooper 5 witch is in Cumberland Maryland and the paramedic said to join my local fire department and learn EMT stuff first but I am a cadet in the Deep creek volunteer fire department which is in Garrett County Maryland

    • @yellowthunder92
      @yellowthunder92  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@DerekCosner The Medic you talked to gave you great advice. You need to start somewhere and working as a volunteer and getting your EMT-B is how you do it. In order to become a Paramedic you can either pay out of your own pocket which will cost in the ballpark of $6,000 to $9,000 or you can find other means with a good attitude and being a good teammate. Since you're already a volunteer at a fire house I would ask around and find your path towards becoming a Paramedic. The state is hurting for Paramedics and I'm sure you will find a way if you're willing to work for it.

    I have great respect for these professionals and the Maryland state police in general. However, this EMS service is monopolized by the State (thru taxpayer funded resources) and therefore, no civilian medevac/EMS can compete. That in turn greatly restricts competition by a civilian provider for the obvious reasons that no company can compete with the State. The state should stay in their domain of law enforcement and allow civilian companies to provide EMS throughout the State. That said, I say again, I have the utmost respect for Maryland State Police and all who work in the aviation unit.

    • @yellowthunder92
      @yellowthunder92  7 месяцев назад +1

      Maryland State Police Aviation gets their funding through vehicle registration which covers about 80% of the cost. The remaining 20% is covered through federal funding from sources such as Homeland Security. Since Maryland was the first state to provide Helicopter Medevac in this country it will always be in existence most likely. There was a time when MSP aviation provided all Medevac services in the state but this is no longer the case. Private civilian Helicopter EMS providers handle all Hospital to Hospital Medevac operations exclusively while MSP handles all scene Medevacs exclusively. The only time a MSP helicopter provided Hospital or Hospital Medevac or if Private providers handle a scene Medevac is under extreme circumstances.

    • @maus92
      @maus92 5 месяцев назад

      Therefore, all ambulance service should be provided by private companies? We hear this complaint periodically, usually stemming from the large helicopter services companies and their affiliates and lobbyists.
