I bought my 800 directly from the Rotring website, while shipping took longer I'm sure than Amazon, I have no complaints that most people have with their 800s. I have used my pencil as my daily work mechanical pencil as an engineer for about a year now. It has worked flawlessly, I have less lead sleeve movement under lead advance depression motion than you demonstrated in this video but some movement none the less. My only complaint is the sense of scraping under the rotation of the rear twist nob, I simply applied a little graphite lubricant to it and it twists smoothly now. I have noticed some videos have 0.5 or 0.7 instead of 0,5 or 0,7 which mine came with the traditional German usage of the "," to denote a decimal "point". Most of the 800s I've seen with problems have the decimal english "." used instead of the comma I'm not sure if that's a batch or newell distributed issue but something of note.
I've just got mine in .5 I've written 7 pgs in the last couple days with 0 breaks (I don't advance the lead past 2-3 clicks. I've had it in my shirt pocket bouncing down back dirt roads and the leads are still intact. Mine was from Amazon. I'm not a super snob but I wanted to get a utilitarian luxury pencil. The 600 was originally retractable. I had one in silver and gold that I bought back in 1993 , which I unfortunately lost. I then bought a replacement 600 online in 2003 not knowing that they had changed the design, and I don't like it at all, in fact I never used it. Fortunately I found out about the 800 series and got the very same you are showing from a dealer in Germany. Excellent piece.

Clutch Situation i think he has the 600 G. Like the 800, but better mechanism (twist mechanism still has hardness indicator). So sad they are no longer available.
In 1989 I worked a A I Friedman Art Store in NYC on Madison Avenue. That was when the Rotring 600 made it’s advent as you said here. For nineteen year old me it was a must have, I gleefully bought one. Recently I purchase a new one off Amazon for lees than I paid back in the 80’s unbelievable. For certain I do agree it’s one of the best writing experiences for a mechanical pencil. Now I am fetishizing over the 800 just because it looks so cool, and is retractable. Though I do own 3 PENTEL GraphGears and for drawing I prefer then greatly, they’re more suited for artists is my belief.
just bought one on ebay for 40 bucks, still expensive and agree with most of the review, but probably one of the most well designed /aesthetically pleasing mech pencils in my collection.

The 800 was originally call 600 gold in the 80s and was also originally released as a special edition for a limited time. I own the 2mm leadholder version and I have removed the pocket clip and that just looks so much cooler. I am thinking of getting the 0.5 and 0.7 to complete the set.

Just you know the Rotring rapid pro 0.5 mm does very well cause the sleeve moves back when the lead starts to wear out I use both 0.5 and 0.7 mm without any problems

@@ClutchSituation it would be nice to list in description as an update the things you later realized you said wrong in the video. is a good habit and builds trust for the viewers. in this case, the "double the weight" you would have DEFFINETILY felt it in the hand, but they are very similar. cheers!
I actually just use a pen cap for my rotring 600.. pretty secured
My Rotring800 0.5 just arrived. I ordered online Jetpen. Seems the new version of 800 when you open it all tip is made of metal. It reduced lead break happens. The feeling in hand is totally different from600 because it is more heavier than 600. I like the weight of 600 It just feel right in your hand. When you are writing you even forgot it is in your hand. But the 800 is heavy, I mean you can totally feel the extra weight compare to 600. Maybe some people would like that weight. But I love 600 more.
Pen at this price range should not have such issues.
I just use a pen cap on my Rotring 600, it's true that it fades the paint from the pencil, but my pencil is old enough that it doesn't matter anymore
same!! but next time I'm going to buy the silver version since it won't be to obvious on that. :)
Retractable tip mechanical pencils = plastic ones.
Fixed tip mechanical pencils = premium ones.
To me, if I pay a premium price, I expect a premium product. And the one on the top with unmatched solidity/robustness and best quality feeling = Rotring 600.

Besides, if you want retractable tip mechanical pencils, you still have other premium choices: Rotring 800, Rotring Rapid Pro...
If you drop Rotring 800, it becomes a projectile, with the lead dispenser head, going for crash landing into a hard surface. With all that mass, 2 feet drop is all you need to make this mechanical pencil a peace of ugly paper weight.
That is exactly what happened to my son. And all that misery that followed about getting the pencil fixed. Countless hours on RUclips. And alas it is so complex to even open, what is the point. So we decided to call Rotring service center. The pencil was barely 3 months old. They tell me that it will be covered under warranty. I mail the pencil to France and then get an email saying that it will cost me $36 to repair the pencil.
Hunh? That is more than it costs me to buy a new one. I tell them not to mail me the damaged pencil and I don't want to proceed with the repair.
So, after $8 in sending them pencil for repair, and my informing them not to mail the damaged pencil back, they did send it back completely mangled piece of junk. It seems the technician working on the pencil also struggled opening the damn pencil. Porting 800 was butchered. And they spent another $5-6 to ship me back damaged pencil in a nice plastic container.
Damn it. What a waste of time and money.
Next time, get a Pentel P205, or a Pentel Kerry. You won't have any kind of issues with any of these pencils and in the same time ,you get the best pencils in terms of performance.
Rotrings are fancy, but not reliable and don't have the performance that Pentel's do!!

I'm an Artist, Finally i decided to buy Rotring 600 as per your review.
How about the Balance ? some other reviews says rotring 600's balance point is somewhere near the middle just like Pentel graphgear 1000. i'm confused coz I'm really concerned about the balance i hope you will help me in this, thanks.

Was looking for a review of the mechanism and saw this video. Great video, i have heard that some have huge wobble issues as in bad machining and they are now all made of brass internals your is the plastic internals and holding up okay? I got mine off amazon and seems many on Reddit exchange them if they do not have the revised internals.

Easily the best pencil in the market after the Rotring 600. There is a pencil I would put ahead of this one and that is the Retro 51 Hex-O-Matic, but since that pencil only comes in .7mm I can't really put it ahead because that right there is a deal breaking limitation to anyone who needs .3mm and .5mm, which are the lead sizes most artist work with .7mm is for school boys! Damn you Retro why not .5mm. So until Retro 51 picks up its act, the Rotring 800 is the way to go!
I doubt they ever will. Retro 51 is style over function. They made a surprisingly good drafting pencil for their only outing, but I think it is fair to say that they were just trying to gain minimal access to that market.

Hello very nice videos! what about the Piloto shaker? It's worth buying it? and comparing the Rotring 600 , 800 with Pilot shaker which is the most comfortable ? I'll appreciate your opinion! thank you very much
The Pilot Shaker is all plastic and has a thick ribbed plastic grip. So it would be worth buying if you like that style and feel. Comparing it to the Rotring pencils is like comparing apples to oranges. The Rotring pencils have knurled grips and are made of solid brass. Much higher quality but with added cost, of course. You get a much better pencil.

Thank you very much for the review, it is pretty helpful. I wonder have you got any chance to try the 0.5mm? After watching a lot of your reviews, I really interested in having one of the 800. I like the 600 as well but Im afraid I do have to carry the pencil all around, the retractable 800 probably its the best for me. However, as you mentioned in the video, Im worried about the breaking leads problem, never want a $50 luxury pencil to have this problem. Much appreciated you video again!!!
+Roseylex Li I have not actually tried the 0.5mm. I will say that after weeks of use, I still feel like the 0.7mm is a great pencil. It isn't perfect. And I think that is what a lot of reviewers expect when they first get it. But it's still very solid: like writing with a 600, but portable and a slightly more squishy mechanism.
Michael Fryda thanks!! but considering breaking lead is a serious problem for a $50+ mechanical pencil while 600 and rapid pro dont have this issue. I probably go with rapid pro since it is portable as well. However, I really like the 800!!!!!!! Guess ill consider a couple extra days before make the purchase :)

+Roseylex Li All good points. I have yet to suffer lead breakage on my 800 and I'm now many weeks in. If you don't mind the weight of the Rapid Pro (much heavier than the 600/800), it would definitely be a better buy for the price point.

It's an 800 with a stylus. There you go. I never intend to buy it unless I get a tablet someday and even then there are probably better styli out there.

5:03 The Pilot h1005 retractable pencil doesn't move the sleeve then advancing the lead. It's really well build. But I can't find it online.

I'm looking to carry the Rotring 800+ in my pocket. What pocket sleeve or case would you recommend?
The 800+ is, by definition, pocket safe. As to a case for protection, I like the Global Arts cases available at Blick Art supplies.
I just stuck mine in my pocket.. really not afraid of wear n tear. Got it to use it! Kaweco makes some nice sleeves though Andi have one for my liliput fountain pen

+jimsta10 The 600 (6 mm) and 800 (5 mm) erasers are different sizes. A search online suggests that Pentel Z3-1 erasers might fit the 600 and Z2-1N might fit the 800, but I haven't confirmed that.
Hey, cheers for the quick reply...quick question. If you had to buy to types...would you get a combo of 800 & 600? or 800 and Rapid Pro? Only because the 600 seems more fragile (tip) for my use.

+jimsta10 If I were to do it over, I would get two 600s of different size and color. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but I would rather have a solid "risky" pencil I keep in a case than pay the price of the 800 or the weight of the RP.

Is the rotring 800 not supposed to click when I advance the lead? Or is that just mine?
The 800's click is considerably less sharp than the 600 and most mechanical pencils.
It's a very quiet click.. the actual advance mechanism and clutch release are TINY compared to any others I've looked at... Size of this seems to dictate the click volume
You need very thin tape for that mod.. nothing I've tried clears well.
After reading nightmare-like reviews on Amazon I'm scared to buy a Rotring at all - to say more I'd need it as a gift. Yes it's stylish but I want it practical first of all. And I don't want Retro-hexomatic or TWSBI or even Kaweco as overestimated... Reguarding that would you mind to make a review on such pencil as Tutto 3 (have you heard about it?) - I haven't got - what german company is producing them for a new american brend... and at all maybe somehow it is possible to unscrew all these top solid-brass pencils to show the real stuff... I'm in search for smth stylish and posh looking as Rotring 800 and practical at the same time and of black color to present for a manger in bank financing.

The Tutto 3 seems like a pretty big financial risk for something that I'm not sure that I'd like.
Hmm... but why - is it matter of taste? Or just because it's unknown? I think it's obvoius - yes, it was design of artist but produced by company mastering in that field. I have no reasons not to believe it's really by Kaweco. And if it will cost 35 $ or so - isn't it a good purchase for 3 calibres of leds at once and retractable tip, and posh look?? I can't compare with Rotring, but I don't want to pay only for a brand of Rotring - I prefer pencil been really reliable. And Rotring after all negative reviews still is 50 $. For me it's much higher risk when 1/2 of buyers are not satisfied by 800 (I'm not saying of course that 600 is not good or maybe even 800 - I haven't tried but also I definately don't want to risk).
Until I see it for sale, I have no way to know that it will cost 35 USD. Touch of Modern had it for 55 USD "on sale" and then removed it. Where do you see it available for purchase? The only thing I had to go by was the indiegogo campaign, which I remember being much more expensive than that. What is your source? If the Tutto 3 became affordable, I'd consider it.
Is the writing experience on the 800 really the same as the 600? Because I've heard that the tip on the 800 wobbles or wiggles when writing. Does that make the writing experience on the 800 unenjoyable or troublesome?

Tip wobble could be an issue for you. Remember that my opinions on things change over time, just like everyone else. 600 currently sits at my Number 1. I think if you like it, and don't need pocket safety, there is no need to upgrade.

@@joshk.4096 got the rapid pro .5 and .7 the .5 took some getting use to cause I had a heavy hand when writing do you have a light hand or heavy hand when writing if it is heavy then .7 is better

I think it is fair to say that it is noticeable. If it is difficult for you to make peace with a little tip wiggle, this probably wouldn't be a satisfying investment to you.

Have you tried the "Pentel Orenz" 0.2, 0.3 mechanical pencil. how it works I'm not sure, but what a pencil.
The only one I've tried broke within one day of use.

What do you value in a pencil? It depends on what people like. Is pocket safety important to you? If not, it's hard to go wrong with the Rotring 600.

What model is your pencil? I'm asking this because I found one on Amazon for $40 and the model number is 1904447.
That is the model number for the 0.5 mm 800. So, if you feel it is legit and not a knockoff, that is a good price.

It's a cheap 600... Good entry. Solid mechanism. Has a plastic body and is much lighter
don't drop the 600 on the tip
I did that the other day. Straightened it back out by eye using my fingers and then ran a torch hole reamer tool through the feed and it's good as new.
That is why Graphgear 1000 by Pentel kicks 600s ass. For less money you can just retract the tip and be safe.

I don't see anything special about this pen is any better than Ohto mechanical pencil and it's 3 times cheaper. Ohto has many more features than this rOtting pencil. I was wanting to get this rOtting but after see your review I do appreciate my Ohto pencils more... no kidding.
You are entitled to your opinion. The top criticism of the Ohto ProMecha is quality. It definitely has more features, but at what cost?

A tiny bit. This is a big concern for a lot of people for the 800. It's just very difficult to get a retractable tip that doesn't have some kid of wiggle. The Rotring 600 Newton retractable is rock solid (and expensive because it is no longer in production), but you lose the knurling on the grip.

Clutch Situation Oh I see. I have one more question, (sorry if this was answered in the video. As of right now I'm too busy to rewatch the video and don't recall all of the points) excluding the retractable tip mechanism and the fact that it has no lead grade indicator, is the 800 identical to the 600? (i.e. the balance, knurling on the grip, weight, etc.) I'm thinking of getting an 800 (I used a 600 before but right now I need a pocket version of it, so the 800) and, judging from online sources, there may be a fix to the small play and possible lead breakage that it may have. If I could fix these problems and have a pencil basically identical to the 600 but with a retractable tip, that would be perfect.

What could you do to protect the sleeve of the 600 i need help because im concerned that if i drop it the tip will break and i have to buy a replacement tip for it and which would you recommend for really comfortable feel and sturdiness like it feels like the tip not wiggling while your writing which one 600 or 800
Buy a hard back case.
Taztaz Riax buy one of those cheap plastic bic pens. Then, take the cap and stick it on the rOtring 600. Bam. Problem solved.

If you like the Graph 1000 for Pro, the Rotring 500 would be about the same. The 600 would be an upgrade.
Hey guys I have a very important question that nobody has answered:
Aside from the stylus, how does the 800+ compare to the normal 800? Is the 800+ an improved version internally? Please help me out here!
It's a stylus. That's it. It is the most marked up feature.
Only feature added to 800+ was the stylus biggest mistake buying it the tip was dysfunctional and wish I just bought 3 more 600's for that price.
Why do you say "rotring" in such a weird way?
+Erick Aparicio Rotring is originally a German company and that is the German pronunciation. It comes naturally to anyone who studied German extensively in school.
I've seen like 10 reviews of these pencils and they all said it was a German brand. I'm such an idiot for not realizing that and connecting the pieces together lol. That makes sense now.
+Clutch Situation you roll your r. No german rolls their r. It's a good try though, the german r is more throaty and most english speaking people can only pronounce the soft r.

The 800 has a spongier mechanism, but this doesn't bother me given that it is a pocket safe 600. I think that the 600 is the better value for the money, assuming you have a case to carry it in.
