    I find it very interesting to see how the different shows put the teams in different perspective. If this were Med, you would automatically be on Dr. Charles' side. She is his patient, the police are interfering in his treatment of her. But because this is P.D. - you're actively following the investigation. You want it to be resolved and don't immediately think about treatment. Thus his interference puts him in a bad light. The framing of the different viewpoints is done brilliantly - even though neither party is in the wrong here.

    To be fair, not only was Dr Charles completely in the right, not only avoiding any lawsuits by going through the proper procedure, but he's also the psychiatrist meaning he has a better understanding of when she is ready to talk than any cop could have. She was close to unresponsive and then went crazy and attacked a staff member once already, how do you know she isn't going to snap again and snatch the gun from the holster instead of a knife? Sure, the staff were a little aggressive in rushing her, but he does not deserve any hate for following procedure and doing what keeps the most people safe at the given time.

    I see a lot of comments bashing Dr Charles here. And while I agree that the two nurses definitely went in way too hot to sedate the girl, I think Dr. Charles was right in that it wasn't the right time to interview her yet. Eye witness accounts are notoriously unreliable, and then you add in the fact that she's a young girl who has just been through such a dramatic event... there is a big risk that her testimony could point the cops in the complete wrong direction.

      welcome to the psych ward. at one of my stays, something happened where one patient was hauled off, sedated and restrained. a day later said patent was much calmer and was more open to conversation, and even apologized for their actions. its hard to understand but when you are hospitalized, your safetly is the staff's number one concern. by restraining her, they can focus on the work they need to do so that she can be in the best mental state she can be in to help the police. a dissociated, traumatized girl would more likely to give unclear answers and trigger another mental break in which she could harm herself or others.

      It was probably more of a subconscious reflex action than an actual planed strategy. When attacked people do one of two things - Flight or Fright.
      They run like Hell to get away from the danger. Or freeze up & play dead to make the person/thing threatening them think they're no longer alive.
      Her brain decided on Fright - aka playing dead in order to survive. She more than likely would have fainted. & her sister would have fallen on her as she was shot further protecting her.
      Young children (& animals) will often opt for the Fright/Freeze option when confronted with danger. Because they are aware they cannot out run an attack.
      & for those who like to rip apart & bash discussions like this. Saying "Oh but it's just a TV show. You *KNOW* it's all fake." The story on the show may be fictional.
      *BUT* it's was written using multiple real world examples of similar situation. & psychological accounts of what people actually will do when faced with situations like this.

    I'm with Erin on this one, I understand where Dr. Charles is coming from, but Erin was able to get through to Polly when she was in an agitated and unstable state. I think they should have given her some time to help Polly calm down and talk about what happened.

    The girl just lost her entire family. She is in a psyche ward. She attacked the medical staff there. Tell me, is there any indication that she is capable of helping Erin out, even if she said she wanted to? The problem with the girl now is, not only is she traumatized, she is not rational. She is a danger to herself even. Really, Erin... what were you thinking? You think that interviewing her can solve your case any faster, when she can't even think straight?? She is in the psyche ward for a reason!

    What episode of Chicago pd is this?

  • @KristiContemplates
    @KristiContemplates 2 года назад +44

    People, please remember this is fiction, and not how competent hospitals operate.
    1. Kid isn't going to be wandering around in socks,
    2. Kid wouldn't be anywhere in the vicinity of a live blade already on the handle, and
    3. Decent mental health unit staff would have talked a child into cooperation.
    Sure, might take little longer than crash-tackling, but is more effective and less traumatic for all involved, including already traumatized child.
    Crash-tackling is for impatient staff who think they have better things to do, usually due to insufficiency in staff numbers and resources.
    Oh, there's the occasional mental health nurse who choose the speciality to bully the patients, because who're going to believe - the nursing staff or the psych patient?
    They're the ones who love the excitement of the crash-tackle.
    TV shows wanting to speed the story along and make things exciting.
    They're not worried about reality, only ratings and reviews and revenue

    • @jimloontiens9275
      @jimloontiens9275 2 года назад +6

      it's a tv show, not a reality show , 1 case per episode , we all know it takes longer , days, weeks , months or even years to solve a case . and if a show doesn't make revenue it gets cancelled.

    If it were a grown unstable man stabbing staff and then sedated no one would complain. But even if it’s a little girl whose story we know the fact remains - the girl proved herself as a danger to others and herself at the moment. And this was a decision to calm her at exactly that moment. (And yes the fact that she put a knife on the floor doesn’t mean she certainly calmed down) They won’t sedate her when she is not doing anything dangerous. Her trust issues with doctors is the last thing that is going on in her mind, I imagine. And even if it’s lost because of the accident good specialists will earn it back and she hopefully will understand what she did and there will be no regret about sedation when a person could have died.
