As funny and relatable as the cucumber monkey’s reaction is here, to me, the really interesting part is that the grape monkey never seems to question the fairness of this setup at all
Grape monkey is so busy enjoying the grapes, it probably doesn't even realize that the friend is getting stuck with cucumbers.
Also the monkeys mad at the scientist, not the other monkey.
Busy enjoying the fruit of his labor lol
As is the case for rich people who become more and more disconnected from reality the longer they are rich, deluding themselves that the world is a meritocracy.
It's like the Paul Piff monopoly experiment (also discussed in a Ted talk) where he had pairs of students play an obviously rigged game of monopoly where one player started out with more money and got to roll 2 dice instead of one, allowing them to move around the board faster. After the game, when the students who inevitably won were asked why they had won, they ALL talked about the smart moves they made and the strategies they employed. None of them acknowledged the head start and blatant advantages they were given.
i like how we're now referring to them as "grape monkey" and "cucumber monkey"
I love how the monkey was checking the rock like "Did i give her a defective one?"
You're laughing. He was given cucumber instead of grapes and you're laughing
😂😂
The laughing hurts even more.
And to think that this video is shown to an even higher intellect which marvels at the cruelty of the hairless primates towards the others
*"u think it's a joke hoooman??"*
Oh lighten up you depressing saps.
The other monkey received grapes after the experiment. People are laughing because there is hunour in comparing human behaviour to that of an animal's.
Scientifically proven: Grapes are tastier than cucumbers
ckbs1: no, the 1st monkey (cucumber monkey lol) hasn't tasted the grape yet so how does it prove that the grape is better tasting? the one and only reason 1st monkey is asking for grape is that he's doing the same work as the 2nd monkey and so everyone must get same reward (either cucumber or grapes). If 2nd monkey was given a cucumber, 1st monkey wouldn't care about the grapes. lol

I am amazed how intelligent they are. The one who gets the cucumber actually bangs it against the wall, testing it, because she thinks there must be something wrong with it for getting cucumber instead of grapes. So her rock must be lacking in quality according to her thoughts. Thats an insanely high level of intelligence for me. Crazy.
Being able to identify the inequality, being able to understand that this must have a cause, and trying to find it.
And im not sure that she tests it, maybe shes showing it to the doctor like "see, my stone is as good too, gimme grapes!"
Just awesome and crazy.
Similar to humans being passed for promotions, being paid less, or not being given a raise or bonus, some will attribute it to their own short coming. It's a mentality that is pervasive in America, the idea that you are in complete control of your destiny and not a monkey inside of a cage who will get cucumbers no matter what you do because that is the life you were born into while the monkey next to you will have to do nothing and always get grapes.
That’s a reach. No evidence they thought that deeply, they could have just been angry

@@kx7500 It is not a "reach" it is a "hypothesis" and you are in the wrong place to be assuming anyone is "reaching." That being said, if the behavior wasn't at least in part focused on the rock itself, the monkey would only have grabbed the glass or thrown things like it already did. The rock was an extra factor and there is enough evidence to form a reasonable hypothesis that there is a consideration behavior happening.

Be interesting to see what would happen if each of the monkeys had a different phenotype. Also, this isn't "pay", because neither of the monkeys had to do any real work for it? Employers are well aware of this, why do you think they insist you don’t tell your coworkers how much you get paid?
Exactly, which is why you should let your coworkers know how much you're making. You could have agreed to get a pay of 15$ an hour while someone working just as long as you doing the same work is making 16$ an hour, but because you both are afraid of telling each other what you're making, you end up getting cheated and not knowing it.
@@_IcyCube_ except its not cheating... if you agree to work at a wage then thats that. No one is forcing you to do it its not soviet Russia if you feel you can sell your labor for more then go do it no one is stopping you. Plus this line of thought completely ignores the biggest reason for wage dissparity which is competency and reliability. If you and i both work at the same job for a year and you show up everyday and allways do a good job but i call out and do an average job and then our reviews go around we both come up for raises and you get a dollar and i dont then is it unfair that we have a different wage?
Of course this can be used to take advantage of people like only giving white employees raises simply because theyre white or men simply because theyre men without giving consideration to the quality of their work this is illegal and has serious consequences if proven to be true. But to assume that all wage disparities are results of inherit biases or discrimination is not only false but dangerous misinformation.

My wife kept insisting I go to the company we sub-contracted with and demand more money. My gut instinct said not to. We were making very, very good money and I didn’t want to jeopardize that. We didn’t know what the others sub-contractors were making but I was ok with the gamble. She was sure we were getting “cheated” so after six months of this I brought it up. It was embarrassing. I originally negotiated the contract with us being paid at the top of the industry standard. They were ok to keep paying it because we were their best sub. Our renegotiation meeting was overheard by another sub who pitched a fit. It didn’t matter that we did a better job and had no returns to fix mistakes or damage. They didn’t bring the other subs to our pay scale, nay, nay! WE got lowered to everyone else’s pay. I should have followed my instincts!!! It cost us more than $300k over the course of three years. If you’re doing good and are happy shut up and earn your pay. Too many employees waste their employers time and money complaining to their co-workers who really don’t want to hear their whining! After the Crash of ‘07-‘08 we were the last subs contract to be canceled. We stayed their best and it paid off in the end. It just would have been nice to have had the extra pile cash .💰
The most interesting in these behaviors to me is when the betrayed one checks the stone against the wall before handing it back. That means he formulated a hypothesis on the reason why he didn‘t get the grape, then he checked up on it. That is intelligence!

I work in a nursing home as a CNA (Nursing assistant) and get paid slightly above minimum wage. The place I work is in desperate need of CNAs to care for the patients, so they brought in registry CNAs to fill in. These registry CNAs we’re getting between $26-$28 an hour while the regular employees get paid $16. Needless to say, we asked for equal pay in which they replied, “you agreed to your current pay when you signed the contract.” Well guess what? Many of the CNAs quit and the Nursing home was filled with registry CNAs who were not accustom to the policy while getting paid quite nicely (if they just paid their employees the same rate, they wouldn’t need registry CNAs). The place has not fully recover and their 5* rating dropped to a 2. I won’t be surprise if the place close down.

It was a management decision and they made the wrong decision and the patients suffered. I don’t exactly understand why the people getting paid more could at least do the level of work that the lower paid employees were capable of. Even if they quit and went to another job, paying exactly the same amount of money because that’s what the industry was paying that outcome would be better than staying at the same job, knowing that someone doing the same work as you were getting paid double amount of money that you were getting paid especially after asking for an increase in pay. That’s intolerable because of one’s sense of fairness has been violated.

After doing this for a while it became an every morning ritual.
When other people in the office were out of treats, the monkey understood they don't have one to give to him. Well, the first morning I showed up with no banana chip, he grabbed my hands and rubbed them together, then made my hands clap, then he checked for a banana chip.
No chip. He then did the motions with his hands as if telling me to do it. I did it but still no chip. He got angry at me. Because we already know that capuchin monkeys have a sense of fairness and unfairness through these experiments, we would not need an additional experiment that confirms this sense but uses a more complex setup than this one. The monkeys would show the same reaction, they would get aggitated and we'd have the same result as in the first experiment without finding something new.
@@jayer. It's about as enlightening as an experiment that shows the innate desire for fairness. In this experiment, Left Monkey realizes that he's getting unequal reward for the same work and gets upset. Right Monkey is completely fine with this new system.

What happens when Right Monkey has to complete a task that Left Monkey hasn't been trained to do? I wonder how soon or even if the first monkey would realize they're getting paid only half of what the second monkey is getting paid. Good stuff indeed.
I like the way it checks the second stone to see if it's real. pretty smart.
Smarter than most of humans
Good catch. As if he wanted to confirm it and say, “Yes it’s a rock, look lady, are you as dumb as this rock? Give me a grape”. I heard that in one of these studies they put the chimps together and the one that only got cucumbers beat up the one that got grapes. Jealousy. Very human like emotions.
@@DonaldDump2024 dogs do that too lol
Drasang yea smarter than yo dumbass. Only a dumbass will know one.
How would the monkey even be able to tell it's fake from a simple tap on the wall? Second inequity is not as simple as "jealousy". If a mofos eating better than me constantly when we both put in the same work and I get upset it's not because Im "jealous", I'm fucking pissed theirs inequality.
Thats why you never know a payment of other staff members in company
Or it could be an example of how equal work deserves equal pay!
This is a tactic to prevent unions. People need to know what their colleagues make for the same work
Only the company benefits from this lack of knowledge. If pay was open, then inequality wouldn't be allowed to exist because we'd all go ape shit cucumber throwing crazy about it and have evidence to back it up.
most jobs have equal pay, it's the higher positions, commission based, money (banks, stocks etc) and media jobs where pay becomes different depending on what you bring to the table.
tns226 then why not just ask if you want to know
My granddaughter sent me this when she was in college. I watch it every now and then when I need a good laugh……
I’d be interested in a longer term experiment that makes it more difficult for one monkey to get a grape compared to another.
I.e. the disadvantaged monkey can either give 1 rock now for 1 cucumber or give 4 rocks for 1 grape while the advantaged monkey is reversed.
I love how you can see the exact moment he decides "Nah, I'm not putting up with this."
The slamming his hand on the floor was definitely " gimme my damn grape!"
Its funny to see a woman enabling unequal pay to female monkyes hahahaha

The thought that entered my mind was that there is a species out there that views us as those monkeys and I find that so fascinating.
No need for a species, bosses from huge companies most probably just viewed their workers at the lower levels as monkeys and can easily be replaceable.
Yes, they are called devils and they control the people of this world through spiritual means. The only way out is through faith in Jesus Christ.
God in the flesh, who lived the perfect life and died for our sins, taking our punishment for sin on himself. He rose again the third day and appeared to 500 eye witnesses who had nothing to gain from lying.
Salvation is by Grace through faith and is a free Gift. Not of works, lest any man should boast.

@Annie Springer You want to make your case for that? There's more to being owed than arbitrarily declaring it. The next stage of cooperation would be to hand the rock to the right and then share the grapes to the left. Of course, the monkey on the right probably thinks the one on the left is just less skilled and handing over rocks than he is due to innate laziness. It's strange how those who get the most accuse those with the least of entitlement when, logically, it has to be the other way around.

There was also a study of larger groups of chimps where actual coins were given as a reward for tasks. The coins could be traded for various fruits, etc. There were approximately 30 in the study evenly divided between males and females who were allowed to roam freely in the compound. After a couple weeks a certain female had acquired most of the coins from the males who were looking a bit underfed.
So what does that imply? The female chimp prostituted herself to all the males? I wonder what all the tasks were and what did each task paid and such.

I have lived and worked with wolves for over thirty years. They count up to twelve and are aware of equality, greater and less with larger numbers. They are extremely aware of fairness in rewards, payment. It is sort of okay if a higher rank wolf gets paid some more but very bad if a lower rank wolf gets paid more.
It is interesting how the humans laugh when faced with evidence that other animals understand fairness, and attempt to break free of the cage in which they are being experimented upon.
I don’t think it proves they understand fairness as much as they understand getting fucked over.
It’s not like grape monkey gave much of a fuck about the plight of cucumber monkey
@@OrysB-po1fy Expression of compassion is variable among humans, but that doesn't preclude the ability to understand fairness.
In this situation, where the test subjects are without agency to impact the reward of the other, it becomes about individual success.
Recognizing self and other receiving disparate rewards for identical tasks is identification of inequity. Otherwise, cucumbers would be accepted.
Understanding getting fucked over can only come through understanding fairness, as they are essentially the same thing.
@@Nullpersona No they are not. They’re merely understanding greed. We want what others have. I have watched two bears fishing. Both bears put in the work to fish, one bear got a fish and the other didn’t. And do you know what the bear that didn’t have a fish did? It got in a fight with the bear that did have a fish trying to take the fish. Wasn’t any comprehension of fairness and simply the bear wanting what the other bear had and it tried to take it. There is no evidence this has anything to do with them seeing things as fair and them simply wanting the best for themselves regardless. That’s not wanting things fair that’s just wanting the best. Which is why the other monkey doesn’t give a fuck. Trying to conflate compassion with fairness when you can’t even prove this is a comprehension of fairness and not simply the monkey wanting the more prized food source for its self out of pure greed. Animals see different results for equal work all the time in the real world. Like the two bears not every hunt is successful for the effort put in. How could animals that live in an unfair environment possibly care or know what fairness is? Nature was never fair to begin with, what could fairness possibly benefit them in the actual cruel world? Even pack animals, herd animals there are disparities among members. Some members are more valuable than others. That’s just reality.
@OrysB-po1fy There are myriad examples of animals sharing their food with other animals, especially when they have more than enough for themselves.
Similar to your bear story, humans who have worked, but not eaten, or have food of insufficient qualities, will sometimes try to take better food from others.
Suffering and death promote success over fairness, at the level of survival. One being better rewarded than another for a similar effort is unfair, not sharing is greed.
Individuals can go a step beyond recognizing unfairness, and seek to compensate through compassion, though it is not mandatory to the understanding of fairness.
None of that addresses the unfairness of sentient animals being held captive and experimented upon. Nor does it take note of the hypocritical laughter at unfairness.
you do understand they dont share it for the kindness of their heart right? they do it to get something in return, when they share food they will get something in return in the future, so that is totally different@@Nullpersona
