- Anneka meets Natalie Lagstrom of Watermill Wolves who trains wolfdogs for the film and TV industry as alternatives to full blood wolves. Anneka learns from her the techniques to gently guide low, mid and higher content wolfdogs into training for agility, film acting and day to day in the house behaviour.
Also featuring Captin Khaled, Iraqui dog trainer of RUclips channel خالد K-9 who trained a wolf saved from the exotic pet trade which was aggressive and unhappy and turned him around with gentle positive techniques.

I find my chihuahua incredibly intelligent he learns things incredibly quickly.
However they're very much, what's in it for me breed .

We rescued a pup from the humane society in Colorado 15 years ago when a group of 55 of them were taken from a lady who had them tied to trees. They told us she was 'Alaskan Husky', lol. There was no looking at them without knowing they had quite a bit of wolf in them too. She looked exactly like the wolf right after your intro at 0:09. Once we got her home and started training her it became even more obvious. A different ballgame than training your average pooch but so very worth it. She would escape our yard but then if I flat out asked her how she'd physically show me... we must have reinforced/rebuilt/dug further down a million times. Smartest animal I've ever had the pleasure of being mom to... 13 good long years with her.
Did she show you how she was digging her escape because she thought u wanted her to?
was you able to train her things and she listen to your commands

Natalie's advice on preventing issues before they happen and constantly showing the dog fun things to do rather than just saying "don't do this" is absolutely wonderful advice that most dog owners (with any breed) would do well to listen to. Really loved the advice she gave :)
I was able to teach my hybrids two things. Sit and paw for treats. They were smart enough to know if there was no treat in my hand they didn't do anything

What an incredible pack, and Natalie is such a wonderful woman, I believe that everyone before they get a dog should themselves get some training, so then just maybe less dog would end up being dumped and abused.

A lot of people like to claim that we domesticated dogs by effectively capturing wolves and beating them into submission. I've always doubted this. Fear and pain only go so far with most creatures.
I'm thinking this video shows us a more likely scenario as to how we eventually won wolves over to becoming our companions and partners.

We selectively bred friendlier wolves that we captured which led to them being domesticated so not entirely, watch how they tame foxes it’s a similar idea
If they were beaten to submission then we'd see them in circuses too
They followed our migration routes and ate our scraps. Then we made them our companion with promise of food.
@@BluCharmander yes. This process took many generations in span of hundreds of years if not longer considering looking at wild ancestral dogs as well. Humans benefited in several aspects by getting their scraps rid of and masking/mixing scents so that other predators wouldn't come close to them at their stations. Their behavior would alert them of dangers and strangers as well.Wolves would also provide hides.
Thes are just a few examples.
What happened with the Russian fox experiment was a much more controlled process with selective breeding at it's finest by isolating and choosing specific behaviours which correlated with drops in the fight or flight/adrenaline responses.
Because of this, I believe one could too domesticate wolves and other canines very quickly ( just 10-20 generations).
Best way to treat a wolf is with respect and allow them to be free and wild as they should be. We all just learnt what lockdown feels like. A wild creature in captivity is lockdowned for life. Imaginehow that would feel. That said.....id give my right arm to spend a day with those stunning majestic wolves. Awesome ❤❤

that's true. Though being a pet (Provided the humans are decent) has it's perks. If Mischa isn't feeling good, my brother's immediately on the phone to the vet to get her looked at. That said, she's a couch potato, so home life suits her better most.
I agree, but we also have to understand that once an animal is acclimated to humans, or impaired in some way, release into the wild might not be the best choice. The biggest thing is that the wolf is comfortable, healthy, and happy, as much as humanly possible.

@@remyrichardson9263 Sometimes even healthy animals. For example, a friend of mine works with birds at my local Audubon society. Some of their birds are perfectly healthy, but since they have been raised or just spent too much time in captivity they do not have the skills they need or a healthy fear of humans and would not survive in the wild.

Well, I mean that was actually a wild wolf that was very aggressive. That trainer guys, was an expert dog trainer...that put in incredible amounts of work. The wolf eventually trusted him through positive reinforcement, and the patience of a Buddhist monk, and a sloth combined. He even had the courage to let a wild animal nom on his hand, without getting angry or even slightly reacting...that takes incredible balls.

Not only did I train my own half wolf/half husky hybrid, but she was hands DOWN the easiest dog I've trained! House broken in 2wks, NEVER an accident. Just seemed to know what she could play with on the floor, and what she couldn't. NEVER-EVER stole food. I could leave my food on the couch & run to the kitchen for a beverage and she'd ignore it. Sit, come, stay, off, down, were all done in a few weeks and she did them all OFF LEASH. To top it off, she was the most strikingly beautiful dog I've seen. A leggier sort of Siberian look with the yellow green predator eyes (and a dove blaze on her chest that looked EXACTLY like a dove!). My Rotties, Aussie shepherd, my Newfie/German shepherd mix, and all the rest, she blew AWAY. For the sake of full disclosure, while she was great around people-if aloof, she was definitely an ALPHA around other dogs-BUT-in her mind we were a pack of two, and she was incredibly protective, VERY protective. She was a great ambassador for other hybrids to show what solid citizens they can be! With all of the dogs I've had, they were polite, good canine citizens through repetitive training. For my Sasha Bear...I'd LOVE to say it was my brilliant dog training abilities...but it wasn't LOL! Nope, I'd show her something a few times aaaand she was pretty much "i've got this already, for crying out loud, TEST me dude!" Also, as addendum, as awesome cuddlers as my shepherd & Rotties were, Sasha was the ALL TIME CHAMPION snuggle bunny!
I have a 3 and a half months old czechoslovakian wolfdog and this video was really helpful to me, on RUclips there's not that many resource on how to train a wolfdog, thank you for this video :)

I have a wolf dog, i have raised the mf since he was born, and if i raise my voice when talking to him when he does something wrong he starts growling, and with the time i have learned that i have to growl back to his sorry @$$ to calm him down.
I absolutely love these animals. They require not a power structure necessarily but a respectful relationship between wild and human. Wonderful video

Yes, if it's adopted at an early age, therefore, it'll be way easier for the wolf pup to adapt to the new surroundings, humans, other animals, etc.

She is like the best wolf and dog person, and knows so much about them. She really understands them, unlike a lot of wolf dog owners, she really understands them and is very positive and educating people how to better understand these animals and why they are the way they are.
A lot of what she says is more accurate then a lot of people
They are beautiful, well trained and there a happy pack you can see that.
I have a Siberian Husky. We are almost always together. I wanted him to maintain his individuality so I have never trained him or given him a snack to obey me. He is 2.5 years old and we are pals. I've let him figure things out for himself and he loves me and wants to make me happy (which he does in spades). My neighbors are amazed at our bond. I'm 60 and I've had working dogs all of my life and I have never given a dog a treat to obey me. The best training technique in my view is time. The more time you spend with your dog the more they love you and want to please you. Dogs, especially wolf dogs, need your time more than any scrap of food you might toss it's way. Oh and one more thing. My dog doesn't beg at the table because he knows the last bite is always his. I suppose that satisfies the pack leader instinct in dogs. If you have a dog it is easy to take them for granted. Don't. They are precious creatures and their time with us is much too brief.

Got my wolf dog at 5 weeks and began intensive training and socialization. She was almost perfect. Annie's one weakness was chicken coops. She loved to play, especially with kids. She was 1/4 American timber wolf, 1/4 American Malamute, and and 1/2 American black and tan hound. A true American wolf hound. And the best dog anyone could ever own.

Natalie has a great take on resource guarding. I find my cute little hound dog is exactly the same as these wolf dogs with her meaty bones; if you confront her she'll growl and snarl but with praise and treats she'll change her mind. It's a delicate balance, though. If the dog barely accepts you being close to or taking it's possession, the "training" could actually make their guarding behavior worse.

I wanted to be a wolf dog trainer ever since i was young, I've researched a lot about them and hope to become a trainer in the future. Im almost an adult and god I'd love to volunteer at a location just to better help me in my future endeavors to train these wonderful wolfdoggos.

Wolves are very close to dogs and it was wolflike creatures that evolved alongside humans to become the dogs we see today. Humans and dogs belong together, so maybe its not that far removed that we can domesticate wolves.

Our buddy / German Wolf was easily trained but he was fierce & sensitive to our actions & extremely territorial,
I recall one-day, baring neighbors witness to a event, of these Mastiff Rottweiler mix's who got loose when buddy was only 9 months old, they had been abused & was aggressive but buddy dominated them, & even calmed them down quickly, funny no harm was done luckily to them, he had this way with dogs... But we we're only blessed to have him for 8 happy year's.
Wolves aren't all that "BAD" as Society says, & they actually can be very good guards & friends if you treat & train them properly" !

Wolves are amazing! I think you can totally train a wolf. It's still going to be a wild animal, he may see anybody other than you as a threat and react according to his wild instincts, and could see YOU as a threat without notice if you somehow scare them or hurt them even involuntarily, so that would never make a good pet, but with enough time and perseverance (a LOT of it), I'm pretty sure it's "trainable". Raising him from a puppy would be tons easier. But even then there would be a lot of wild instincts, so not a good pet unless there is no other human in a 1 mile radius XD. This would be my dream btw. Live in the woods with my wolf buddy. This is Wonderland or something.

What a very nice contrast with other videos. I was quite shocked about how in the previous video I watched from this show, nothing was said about the outdated and proven to be bad training methods for the Shiba Inu. The training methods they are explaining here, are actually currently the only methods that are accepted as not bad for the mental health of the dog... Meaning that these methods apply to ALL training of ALL races and types... Thank you for letting these good trainers fully speak.

Can you train a wolf? Yes, with plenty of treats. Food is a universal language.
Fun fact, a breeder friend of mine ended up adopting and raising two Wolf/Dogs from the same litter. He named them Van and Helsing. Absolutely legendary.
I love Winston he's so wolfy looking ahhhh and Eve 💕 I think you should have to have a licence before being allowed own one of these beautiful creatures. I'd love one but know I'm not the right kind of person to have one I'm house proud firstly and I work long hours as a lawyer.

Excellent vid! I used to own a German Shepherd/American Pitbull Terrier (she passed away at 12 1/2yrs). Her mannerisms, self awareness, dislike of being alone, and many other aspects were VERY much like those described for the wolf mixes. About the main difference was her confidence...she had tons of it!
As an example...One day me and some homies were wandering around. We'd found a shopping cart, and were on the way to pick up some raspberry canes. As we traveled, we encountered some crows chilling about 20yds ahead. I let Miný loose and she did not run straight for the flock, she rounded behind a tree and flushed them from the flank! Almost snagged one!!!
A couple of the dogs looked like London the dog who starred in the Littlest Hobo.
Winston looks a bad ass, super loyal pup. Bless him. Give me that over humans anyday.

How do you think primitive humans successfully tamed or domesticated creatures like Elephants? A wild elephant or even wild horse is more dangerous than a wild wolf. Wolves are prime candidates to undergo a domestication procesd

My wolf dog Indy, totally destroyed my couch. Cushion, metal springs, total destroyed. He is much better now after he got fixed. Lots of energy these boys have.
You can most definitely train a full blood wolf. When I was 9. My dad trapped a wolf pup. Brought it home and nursed his leg back to health. With a lot of work. Flash lived with us for 9 years.

When you have a wolf at some point you wonder who is really training who. Once they trust and accept you to be the leader they will be the best "dog" you ever had. Mine always did what I told her to do but she would wait long enough to do it (not more than a minute). My favorite is when I told her to do something she would pretend she didn't hear me but her ears already showed she heard me. Always let them have a short time during the day to be themselves.

My GS white and creme girl has a mom that was part husky and her dad is jet black with bright yellow eyes and part wolf. He's one of the most stunning creature ever ♥️💖 They are all gorgeous 💯😍

Winston looks just like my family wolf dog that had to be put down two days ago due to old age and health deterioration. He lived a long life and seeing another wolf dog look like him full energy makes me happy.

Because they are still newfoundlands, give them time to mature, when they became oldfoundlands, they can be easily trained.
