Video includes 4 Canon M39 Lenses: Canon 50mm LTM 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM, Canon 35mm LTM, Canon 28mm LTM. These Canon rangefinder lenses are fantastic Leica alternatives! Canon M39 Lenses are less expensive than Leica M lenses and are cheaper than Leica M mount Zeiss ZM lenses and Voigtlander lenses for Leica. Recommended!
These are vintage Leica thread mount lenses, Leica screw mount lenses or L39 Canon lenses. This is video #2 in a new series of lens review videos. Here I introduce the amazing world of LTM lenses and show 4 Canon LTM lenses on 4 Leica cameras. Canon 50mm f1.8 LTM on Leica M3, Canon 35mm f1.8 LTM lens on Leica CL Digital, Canon 28mm f2.8 LTM lens on Leica iiia camera and Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM lens on Leica M6 Classic. I don't own the Canon 50mm 1.2 or Canon 50mm 0.95 yet! :)

I just recently got my first Leica, the M3 and it came w/o a lens. But I had a Canon 7 RF that came with the 50mm f/1.4 so all i needed was an adapter and I could start shooting the M3. I have only shot 2 rolls but I am extremely pleased with the Canon. I got the Canon at an estate sale for $75 including the lens.

I made two attempts to purchase a Canon 50/1.2 LTM lens. Each copy I got had an issue - first one the aperture ring was misaligned and showed wide open at f/2.8 instead of f/1.2. The aperture could easily get stuck, too. The store I bought it from was not willing to have it repaired for me and sent back. So I returned it - it had mint glass elements! Next lens had a misplaced lens element and didn't focus to infinity. All other available lens copies online showed either haze or very scratched lenses. In the end I gave up here and went with the Leica 50/1.5 Summarit LTM instead which turned out to be an excellent choice. Later I read that the Canon 50/1.2 LTM is a big gamble, and this lens' construction is known to have flaws, for example humidity sneaking in easily. The only Canon LTM lens which I own is the excellent 35/2.8 Serenar which I got for a good deal online last year.
I am using the same LTM/M adapter which you showed (affordable and does its job well!). One thing important to mention is the trick to remove the adapter from the M-mount camera. It is crucial to have with you either an old Leica or Voigtlander rear lens cap. They have some little notches on the back which will fit into the half-round gaps on the side of the adapter. With this you can easily rotate the adapter from the camera. Unfortunately the new Leica rear lens caps don't have those notches anymore.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks - the trick to release this kind of adapters is not well documented. I found it quite hidden in a photo blog online somewhere. I also used a screw top first but it can lead to scratches on the mount.

Just to add to the fine video. Most every 'old school' lens, unless recently serviced, WILL HAVE fog/haze caused by lubricate out-gas fuming in the light path. So always check the lens by using the 'Flashlight Test' (made famous by Ken Rockwell) before making your final judgment about the little jewel you just bought. I see too many RUclipsr's providing negative reviews of classic legacy glass (old lenses) never mentioning that they CONFIRMED the elements to be CRYSTAL CLEAR prior to testing...

If you sometimes have trouble starting the thread on ltm lenses, here is an old time trick: when you unscrew your lenses, allow them to turn to minimum focus distance, and store them like that. When you go to screw the lens onto the camera, you will find it much easier to find the start of the thread, because the rangefinder focus arm inside the camera is not pushing against the lens.

Thank you, Matt, for pointing out good alternative choices for a prime lens, such as those LTM39 lenses made by Canon or Nikon. Both make very good lenses-to this day. Yet there is a history about Canon and Nikon. During WWII, all the Japanese optical/camera companies were commandeered by the Imperial government to make optical equipment for the military. After the war, there was a need and effort to revive Japan’s domestic industries-and camera makers were among those who needed to revive. The occupation GIs who were in Japan at the time did not have the salary to buy Zeiss or Leica, and they found the Japanese cameras to be very good and affordable. Some of first efforts by Canon and Nikon were to imitate the Leica rangefinders, which is why their lenses can fit the LTM39 mount on a Leica and vice versa. Camera makers in the Soviet Union, such as Zorki, Fed, Industar and Kiev, also imitated the Leica rangefinder. Camera makers then did make good Leica clones, and their gear is still available.
Thus, there is a history to why Leica users can use a Canon or Nikkor lens. This history just fascinates me.

FWIW, eons ago I had a friend who had interned one summer at Life magazine. This was in the mid 1950's. First I Iearned that Life tested each batch of color film Kodak made. If it was a good batch Life would buy all it could and store them in the freezer. Second, Life photographers went to Korea to cover the war with Leica cameras and Leica lenses and returned with Leica cameras and Nikon lenses.
I did get swayed by your review of the Canon 50mm /f1.4 and the 28mm /f2.8 and have bought them both. Hopefully we can get out soon so that I can play with these and other lenses from Japan, like the SMC-Pentax M 50mm /f1.4 that works on an M240 with EVF,

Hello Matt, I admire your portrait shots. Wonderful. Back to the lenses: I do own several Canon 50mm LTM lenses from f 0,95 to f 2.2 and 3.5, but the one I like most is a 50/1.8 all chrome from 1951, I received it with a Canon IVSb2 camera, a perfect camera. If you try to use another Canon RF body try models of the IV series or the V series or the VI-L with thumb lever. Wonderful cameras, as mentioned before with variable magnification in the viewfinder instead of simple lines. The Canon RF lenses I like most are the 2/100 and 1.8/85, both in all black colour (last version). Quality is superiour. I got mine 20 year ago before the price was driven upwards.

I use a Canon 135 F 3.5 ltm lens on my Leica IIIa and really like the results especially when I use a hood. Years ago I bought a Nikon F to Leica LTM adapter so that I could use Nikon lenses on my Leica. There is no focus coupling and you just have to guess or measure the distance to the subject and turn the focus ring on the lens to that distance. This really is a great way to save money on lenses. This especially works on the wide angle lenses with their great depth of field.

I have quite a few lenses so I’m quite fortunate but I might try it anyway. Is the scale focus using the lens not off due to the different camera system flange distance? I guess on wide angle it doesn’t matter. One lens I would try is the fantastic Nikon mount Voigtlander Skopar 20mm .. but then I have 21mm Skopar LTM. Thanks for sharing. I'm using a canon 35 f2, 50 f1.4, and a voightlander 75 f2.5. all really nice lenses. only caveat is when mounted on my m240 or cl (the old film version), is the fixed lens numbers don't sit at the top of the lens, instead being several millimeters to the left or right of center (the 75 is the worst, the 50 is slightly off, the 35 just about perfect). this takes getting used to. my question is, as these adapters are all from fotodiox, are other adapters more accurate in their positioning of the lens after screwing it in?

The images it produces are fantastic, and despite Canon's reputation in the 50s as the "cheap Leicas," everything feels built like a tank. Now I will shop for a Canon or two and be done, along with the appropriate LTM to M adapter. Thanks for all your straightforward help. You and Burling are very helpful. Matt...awesome video as always! I recently also heard about Canon LTM lenses, and I was looking for one for my Leica iiif. I was going to get a 50 1.8 but someone said that it would get in the way of the rangefinder (cutting off a corner of it), making it difficult to focus/compose. Then I saw that the Canon 50mm 1.9 collapsible lens was very similar to the Leica Summar F2. I found one on eBay and it should arrive this Saturday. Have you considered the 50mm 1.9? What are your thoughts on it? Thanks. Keep up the great work! 👏 👏 👍😎

I've seen some photos taken with the 1.9, and it looks like it will give me what I want. @@Banjmedina I know for a fact that haze has a definite effect on optical quality. When using vintage lenses Clarity is destroyed, especially with backlighting, even the slightest haze. I had put together the parts of (2) Stainless Canon Serenar 50mm 1.8 by taking apart both lenses, cleaned the parts, took the best parts from both lenses and put together a lens with clear clean no scratch no separation lens elements. Now shining a strong light through my lens will almost blind you from the clear clean elements. I have shot both lenses before I took them apart and now the difference of my images from this lens is like night and day!! Both lenses had just slight haze and one lens had scratches on the front element. Haze even when slight is an optical barrier that must, in my opinion, be eliminated using alcohol and hydrogen peroxide with Q Tips cotton swabs...

Operationally, I've found out that the difference between Canon Serenar and Canon lenses is the name and date of manufacturer. In the 1970's, when I regularly trolled the newsprint pages of "Shutterbug Ads," screw mount lenses from various manufacturers were cheap enough for college student me. I had no trouble mounting Canon and Nikon LSM lenses on Ye Olde Leica IIIa, since equivalent Leitz lenses were more expensive. I read that Canon wide angle lenses (such as the 19-28mm range) had corner falloff at maximum aperture. This was true on a friend's Canon 19mm and my 28mm lens, but these extreme corners disappeared under the slide mount. (Making "the complete 35mm frame" prints wasn't a priority back then.) What made using "other than Leitz screw mount lenses" on Ye Olde Leica IIIa was a Nicca (or is it Tanaka?) "zoom finder," which went from 35-135mm, going from "everything" on the wide end to "so that's what's out there" on the long end. (There is/was a much better built Nikon zoom finder, in 2 versions.)

Be careful Matt lest you find yourself slipping further into the Canon realm. Like Canon lenses Canon ltm bodies are extremely well made and a strong argument could be made for replacing your Leica IIIa in your travel kit with a Canon IVsb2 with it's combined RF/Viewfinder in an essentially identically-sized body. If you want to go a bit larger the V and VI series Canons (that is "five" and "six") lever-wind models such as the L-1, V-L, VI-L and P come to mind. Amazing value for the cost.

I don’t mean to sound like a Debbie Downer but besides the fact that Leica cameras are works of art and mechanically superior to other range finder cameras, you have mentioned on more than one occasion that they, like other rangefinders, are just light boxes. I recently bought a Canon 7 and may pick up a Canon P in the future. If I’m using canon LTM lenses, why would someone spend 3 to 5 times as much for a body when the Canon (matched with a Canon lens) would basically do the same thing. I guess I would love to own an M3 or something similar but I just don’t see the value in one. $1500 and up is a ton of money for a light box. 🤣
