That is a good question. But, I think it depends on how big the castle or the fortress is. Sometimes they are not big enough to fit all of those troops in a formation they want. Or the size the army is just too big. Also if the walls fail, they are basically surrounded by the their enemy and the walls around them. No way to retreat, It would be a total disaster. As you can see there are some units left in the castle for protection. PS: I forgot, there are Calvary too, they can’t just move around too much if they are inside the castle. Also, have u seen the winterfell size? It is not that big. Another, do u know how they gathered their men? Obviously, they all did not come from the winterfell itself. I feel ashamed, you were talking about the battle against white walker right ? I thought u were talking about battle of b***erds. But this reasoning also could work tho, I think.
In the beginning it says gondor was running out of supplies and needed and was running out of choices, I feel like leaving the castle(besides the trebuchets outside( was pretty justified.
But also Gondor calvary engaging with other calvary was a dumb choice. Gondor was obviously losing the infantry battle and should have used the calvary to their advantage, maybe targeting their archers
The Haradrim moved like the Romans did plus the way the battle was fought somewhat resembles the battle under the walls of Troy (some of you may know what I'm talking about).

If I were the Gondorian strategist and put men outside the walls, I'd make (toward the back) several rows of fake (2D wooden) "men". The enemy would be fooled and all that wood would provide protection when the actual men retreated - much earlier. The enemy would, for awhile, contine to attack the wood men, making them more susceptible to arrows released from the walls. This is a pretty low-tech (do-able), yet effective way of improving the outcome
In reality, what's the point of the castle if you aren't going to stay in it when an army approaches, fewer losses on your side and more dead on theirs.
There has been precedence. In the video I thought he said the Gondorian supplies were running low so it was a gambit to force a favorable engagement with some on the walls and some one the ground. Having only a 2 to 1 number advantage sounds sketchy for a frontal assault, so the Haradrim might have otherwise been content to wait on starvation and morale damage to do some more work for them, possibly forcing surrender terms. Given the heavy armor disparity that looked like a foolhardy move on the Haradrim's part and I'm surprised they took the bait. Another reason why an army might post up outside is machismo. Showing the enemy they aren't afraid of them and don't need the walls. At least not yet. Logistics might be another reason to spread the forces around a bit. Only so many men can fight effectively in a confined space. Keeping reserves and spreading out allows for more tactical maneuvering. But in general yes, you are correct. It was a boneheaded move on both parties to engage. Harad had too few siege engines, troops, and armor. In any case it was a fun little for entertainment scenario.
Just a comment on the tactical decision to fight outside the walls. You'd be better at loss management if you made the enemy try to escalade the curtain wall.

Or the estimated value (lives saved) by various defenses. Presumably, your simulation provides all that data. After a while, the battle gets a bit boring.

Beautiful video! This is the main reason of polygamy has been introduced. Most of the men die during war, there are not enough men left for women to get married. Therefore, it was necessary for a man to have more than one wife to help women to have a dignified and well protected married atmosphere. Which I believe is a very good idea to create a peaceful society. Every woman has the right to be part of producing future generations under the highly dignified umbrella of a man.

Yeah, Minas Tirith held as long as it did before Theoden and Aragorn's arrivals because they defended the walls from the inside.
