This was from the 5th series episode 'Burns' Heir'. the execs at THX loved this spoof so much that it was made into a trailer sting but in widescreen format, the pre-animation was done at Film Roman and it was re-animated by Anivision of Korea. The one with the URL was a 1996 re-release in Dolby Digital, DTS and SDDS.
Man it would be amazing to have classic Simpsons with a new scan from film instead of the upscaled 1990s video masters. Unless the film masters no longer exist or are so disorganized that they can't easily be used, it's amazing that Disney hasn't bothered to do this when they spend big money on restorations of all the insipid filled they made. Even in the best case scenario it would be a big job because all the editing and 60i video effects would have to be redone which I guess why it hasn't happened.
The only thing that rivals this is the joke they made in Tiny Toons Adventures where everyone was blown away out of their seats while the tagline read ' the audience are now deaf"
Turns out this might be completely reanimated, the sides are extended out further than the 4:3 episode, and all the lines are thinner. The animation looks identical in most shots though but I suppose they just redrew it. The one at 0:10 is a bit more dymaic with Bart's hair.
@@HjRobins Unless I'm mistaken, the folks at THX liked the gag so much that they wanted to use it as an actual trailer, so they had the Simpsons crew reanimate it in widescreen.
30 years after its first release theatrically, I still love the fact that THX & ILM turned this into a real trailer after George Lucas himself loved the initial appearance of the gag in _Burns’ Heir._ You can thank David Mirkin for coming up with that concept!
@@CJBStudios That’s definitely something interesting to note. The DVD commentary for the episode where this originated from claimed directly from David himself that he came up with that concept, but the THX Demo discs say that Matt came up with the concept. Maybe both of them came up with the concept? Unless, maybe, that’s not David talking in the commentary I got my source from. I sourced my fact here from the “Extracted Audio Channels” video that Han & Leia oldest son uploaded a few years ago, it dubbed this commentary as the “David Mirkin Commentary” so that’s probably why I claimed it was David’s idea.
I first experienced THX when Jurassic Park came out. The one thing that stood out is when John Hammond popped open a bottle of wine and it sounded like the cork landed in the back of the theater. That was state of the art back then

My favorite THX trailer, hands down. THX, along with its Deep Note, while I've warmed up to both in recent years, has always been one of my biggest childhood fears, and this trailer perfectly illustrates why I was scared to go to the cinema as a kid (with a fear of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" being another reason).

I remember being somewhat confused wondering if the THX gag was from the Simpsons or Tiny Toons during my earlier years, but it's definitely amusing looking back to see this joke occur independently on two separate occasions.
The THX Deepnote always cuts hard. Also, holy cow..... does the original 35mm elements of the old Simpsons seasons still exist? :O Is Disney actually going back to the film elements for brand new HD masters?
interesting to see classic animation Simpsons on film, rather than the standard def video transfer the show has been using for all releases since its been broadcast. I did read somewhere the show was shot on film, but edited and mastered on tape, maybe in the future they'll do a proper rescan of the original elements rather than the upscales that are currently out there.
And more theatrical trailers in 35mm in 4K like About Last Night... (1986), Adventures in Babysitting (1987), Bugsy (1991) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
At this rate they'll likely put out a Roger Ebert biopic at the least. However, neither Siskel nor Ebert are with us so they wouldn't give it two thumbs up.
This is probably the only classic era Simpsons thing that's in actual HD here than an upscale. Glad you're back
