@@gareth449 That‘s my point. Targetting innocent individuals is rude and bullying. The government has for years promoted mass tourism - often with little regard to its impact locally.
I have been going to Spain for 54 years, it was beautiful and people behaved in a completely different way. The rise in weekend stag do's and the like also programmes like bargain loving brits in the sun have totally changed resorts. I met my wife in Benidorm, she is Spanish, we married there and all my wifes family live there. The Poniente side is full of bargain loving brits , it's horrible. I can understand a lot of the protests .

Everything in moderation. Locals going to shops who can only buy fridge magnets and t shirts is a problem. The other is water. Or more accurately wasting water. Tourists perhaps are not as conscious of the sacristy and act accordingly.. I totally understand both sides
You can blame media on focusing on this location, but as a tourist, one never knows to where this new ideology will next spread whilst you're vacationing. Go elsewhere !
Everything in moderation. I live in Mallorca, but have never come across any hostility from the locals. What I do worry about, though, are the finite water resources. That alone ought to put a cap on the amount of visitors allowed in per season.
In my seven years on the island I have also never encountered any hostility - to the contrary. Finding a balance between tourism as the major income generatot and over-tourism straining resources is the challenge. Individual tourists should never be targeted - as we have seen in Barcelona.
Go to Croatia instead .... its beautiful and the sea is clean, the locals welcoming and the sunsets are to die for .... let the Spanish find out why THEY NEED tourism when they are going hungry !
People's memories are short. Countless small businesses in the hospitality industry went bankrupt. I suspect that these people taking part in the protests are not employed in the tourist industry.
Yes, it seems to be part of the same nationalistic attitude that brought about Brexit. It always surprised me how many ex-pats in Spain voted for Brexit, and Brexiters like going to Spain. It's the kind of place where the police tell you off if you don't speak to them in Spanish. I might be wong, but maybe that's why they like it. Perhaps they want it to be like that over here, with the police enforcing the use of English 🤣
Every single balearic person is VERY aware of the impact of tourism in the economy. Many if not the majority of the people on the demostration possibly work in the industry. They know very well the situation. So ask yourself, WHY all these persons are going on demostrations, likely you think they are stupid, they are not. They are forcing the goverment to take action. I am not so sorry for tourists, your leisure cannot come out of the roof of locals, out of their marginalization. Locals are not atrezzo, you fail to comprehend that. Also, it is funny to me after, how long have you been there?, you know absolutely nothing about your neighbours. You just talk about the impact of tourism on the economy...what about the impact of tourism on daily life?On the price of housing, on crime? You all say dont bite the hand that feeds you like if locals were dogs...WTF, come in respect or dont come at all
I do think most people are aware that overtourism is a problem, especially when it comes to limited water resources. However making foreigners responsible for the high cost of living especially crime is ethnocentrism. Globalization is happening everywhere. There are benefits and downsides. See my latest video on the high rentals in Mallorca. Many dwellings are empty because legislation is weighed against landlords. Give landlords tax incentives and make it easier to evict the „ocupas“ and a large part of the problem would be solved.By the way „biting the hand that feeds you“ is a common expression. I doubt whether it was meant to be derogatory.
@@Redfishsword Well, half of buyers in 2023 in Balearic islands are rich foreigners, lot of retirees choose BAlearics because is cheap for them but expensive for locals and half of the island is empty for 2º residencies. Ethnocentrism?I guess thats called gentrification but hey my two cents. Globalization is not happening in Lugo or Guadalajara because theres no tourism, ergo RE is 3 times cheaper, those regions are poorer to yes but the buying power in comparison is higher. The okupas is less than 0,02% of housing and in the majority of cases afects only bank properties, works well to fearmonguering on RE owners though and it is understandable. Look, I live in Menorca and more than 2/3s of houses are empty 9 months out of 12, why? Because those are 2º residencies and tourists rentals and there lies the issue. Apply Denmark law, only after 5 years of residency you can buy RE, problem solved. Is that ethnocentrism too?
I wouldn’t visit Spain. I don’t want to go where people despise you. Go where you are welcomed and appreciated.
155,000 jobs in Barcelona dependent on tourism 😂😂😂😂
years ago , Spain was begging for tourists ,

Pero ya no.
Get the holiday makers out.
That will leave room for immigrants.
How many centuries did it take to get your country back from the last invasion?
Barcelona is banning Abnb rentals totally.
And it will do precisely nothing to ease the housing crisis

I just won’t go to Spain, Turkey for me
