I don’t think they’re anti tourist, the locals, they’re annoyed that people are buying up property and making it unaffordable for locals to live and work in resorts, due to inflated property prices.

Thought the EU was about freedom of movement? It was the Mallorcans that sold their properties to the highest bidder or who turned them into Airbnbs, so I think this is a discussion the Mallorcans have to have between themselves. Btw 40% of Cornwall's revenue comes from tourism, the sad fact is the young will have to move somewhere more affordable as they will have to on Mallorca.

I think that the damage has been done, the press has seen to that. The problem is not the visitors, but the government ,and the council's on MALLORCA. I can understand the Mallorcans
anger. The problem lies with so many unregistered properties put up for the visitors to rent these properties should be for the locals to rent.
But who rents out these houses, most are Mallorcans, because as with everything greed comes into the equation. They can get more money from the visitors, than they would get from their own people. So the council's on Mallorca need to sort out this problem Pronto.
Then maybe the few that are protesting, would have hope of getting a home to live in.

The hotel I stayed at was amazing (Palmanova Beach Apartments by TRH ) so it didn't really make a dent that the supermarket wasn't the most friendly place.

🇮🇹 2023 will be remembered as the year of the Italian tourism boom: the numbers tell us that 445.3 million people visited Italy. This is a huge figure, which even exceeds pre-pandemic ones. Yet, all that glitters is not gold: the processes of "overtourism" (mass tourism) present various negative and complex aspects which often cause enormous damage to the quality of life of resident citizens. First of all, this phenomenon fuels a policy of competitiveness between cities, placing different realities in conflict with each other. It is no longer about promoting culture and local realities, but about selling a product. This evolution undermines the typical original nature of common goods, which should be preserved for society as a whole. In this context, cultural heritage loses its function of safeguarding the fundamental rights of the person, in particular those linked to culture, also compromising the interests of future generations. The accentuated commercialization of culture leads to commodification, with an increase in prices associated with growing tourist demand. As a result, there is a progressive exclusion of certain social classes, who find themselves unable to access cultural experiences due to high costs. In this scenario, culture becomes a product destined to satisfy the expectations of the tourist market, to the detriment of its authenticity and its importance as a heritage shared by the community. All this becomes further complicated if we consider the most insidious aspect hidden behind the phenomenon of overtourism: the constant residential emptying caused by the increase in living costs. Tourist destinations, in themselves, have high costs, as they act as visitor attractions. As a result, ordinary costs inevitably rise: from rents to property prices, up to basic necessities. This causes the exodus of the resident population, mainly for two reasons: the cost of rent and the transformation of homes, once intended for families and students to rent, into holiday homes and B&Bs. This situation contributes to a vicious cycle in which residents are pushed out of their communities due to rising costs and the transformation of the housing fabric, with significant effects on the social cohesion and sustainability of cities. Transforming your apartment into a holiday home is more convenient since the tax rate is 21% and the profit is tripled. In the city of Naples alone, in 2023 there would have been a 300% increase in requests to start business to open B&Bs and holiday homes. Furthermore, a study by the "Rete s.e.t" reports that in 2020 there are 7,500 rental advertisements for tourists, including B&Bs and guest houses, 70% of these are located in the historic centre. This means that, in the city of Naples alone, 5,000 apartments have been removed from the rental market, causing social and economic damage to the families who once lived in these apartments, forced to emigrate to more degraded neighborhoods, disconnected from the urban fabric and deprived of services, generating a differentiation between the rich, who can continue to live in the city, and the poor forced to abandon it. In essence, a social crisis is being generated which affects not only residents, but also away students who are no longer able to find an apartment, or in any case cannot afford one. This fact alone calls into question the excessively positive tones with which mass tourism is often praised. The issue remains stratified. Traders find themselves in difficulty as they are unable to support the influx of tourists and are forced to reinvent themselves, adapting to tourist nightlife, or they risk closing, as often happens. This involves the disappearance of shops and commercial activities, which represent the cultural fabric and historical memory of entire neighborhoods. Demonstrating that mass tourism is only good for those who can afford it, i.e. the wealthy rentier. The other worrying aspect is the total absence of public policies aimed at orienting tourism towards a sustainable dimension, capable of bringing real benefits. The dangers and effects of overtourism - in which we can also include environmental damage - are not yet transparent to most people, described through a distorted and unambiguous narrative. But if it is true that tourism can bring economic, cultural and social benefits, it is equally clear that the excessive influx of visitors can jeopardize the balance of local communities, threaten cultural heritage and create social disparities. It is imperative to adopt sustainable approaches and prudent strategies to balance the promotion of tourism with the conservation of local resources and the safeguarding of cultural identity. The tourism industry and local authorities must work together to implement policies that protect host communities, preserve the integrity of heritage and encourage responsible tourism. Only through joint commitment and prudent management will it be possible to guarantee that tourism continues to be a driver of development without irremediably compromising destinations and the well-being of the people who live there. (google translate)

It’s happening everywhere worldwide especially in popular tourist destinations. People who make money are some local with economic powers and those dominant group of foreigners are in control of economic powers worldwide resulting local people being poorer in their own home in their own countries. This is one of the results from when A greedy governments and A greedy riches are dealing businesses under the carpets. Shouting and abusing visitors isn’t going to change anything. Protesters Should Shout to their greedy governments and the greedy riches to be less greedy + to put policies in place to protect the benefits and wealths for their own local wellbeing first.

I think you need to talk to a local because you really don't understand the problem or you don't want to understand it. We are not saying at any time that no tourists should come here, the amount of tourist that we have is just not sustainable. I don't know if you think that we all work here as waiters or we are your servants but many people in mallorca have university degrees and studies. We are demanding that the model be changed and that other jobs be generated, this model is unsustainable but our government has always been very corrupt. I don't think you know that the locals here because of the drought have water restrictions for showers, watering the fields, etc. etc. but not for tourists. In addition many people who work on the island are not even from here but are from outside just like the investors who come to get rich through our island. The foreigners buy massively houses and do not stop destroying and building on the island and that besides having to leave mallorca involves loss of traditions, culture, language, etc. Many of my friends and myself included are doctors, teachers and professors who have had to leave. So inform yourselves well of the problem with a local.

Exactly. The government allows locals to sell off land on the island. There are many Mallorquin families where the parents who own properties are old and passing away and their grown children are selling them off and also selling land to the highest bidder. In other countries, this type of sale of land to foreigners is controlled, but in Mallorca, it´s all about raking in cash without a care in the world as to where that cash comes from. Families that owned large houses are selling off their parents´houses so that apartments and hotels can be built in their place. GREED is what is killing Mallorca, not tourists or foreigners.

Flying does contribute to global emissions, which are linked to millions of deaths annually. Tourism, including air travel, is responsible for a significant portion of these emissions. Mallorca's resident population has increased by nearly 25% in the last 20 years, a significant proportion however are floating, ie they leave after the season ends and return the next year. This is problematic for any housing authority as owners of some properties prefer and rely on the security of tourist occupancy and yearly income. Protestors blaming tourism do have a point but it is not the real issue. It is being used as a campaign slogan to pressure the authorities into ensuring temporary seasonal accommodation for floating residents.

The empty houses are the problem. Everybody from other countries want a hosues here to sell it later (200% the last 10 years) and to go there 2 weeks every year and we can't prohibe them buying if they don't live here because Ursula and the European Union say that it's illegal. You're happy if you have servants in summer and you think that this is the problem but do you know that it's people who have to leave the island, their family and culture(doctors, police, lawyers, engineers (like me)) because they can't live properly with a salary that is high for Spain?. It's people living here in winter but we are a problem for the hotel mafias and the politicians. They don't want us here.

Well I have to wait till after midnight to be able to walk my dogs, to be able to take the recycling and the trash out. I no longer go out during the day unless absolutely necessary. I have to look out the window to see how crowded it is before going out. I'm stuck inside my home. Walking from my apartment to for example the pharmacy is close to impossible. A walk that is 5 minutes turns into 15. So many tourists I have to wait for them as they walk slowly. If you say excuse me they look at you like "how do you dare we are on vacation." Not everyone is on vacation. I walk between them as if avoiding land mines. Avoiding people with their camera wanting perfect pictures. If the tourists were at least a bit considerate. But to the tourists it is like no one lives here and only tourists have the legal right of way. I just went to throw the trash out during the day and even though they see me with the bags they do not move so I have to push through. To watch tv I bought speakers because it is impossible to hear the tv with all the tourist talking loudly, laughing loudly, or totally drunk. My dogs are always stressed and barking because of the noise. My dogs get scared to walk around so many people. I don't want to be mean. Its good to laugh and be happy but not at the cost of others. I no longer go to bed when I want to. I have to wait until the restaurants close. Yes we need tourism but why tourists cannot be considerate and let people who are not on vacation go about their daily lives. All we ask is be considerate and conscious that people live here. This is not your playing ground it is a place where kids go to school, people go to work exactly like you do back in your country. You have the right to go on vacation and we have the right to live and move around without issues.
