Our Sapporo Travel Guide! Join us as we explore this most unusual of Japanese cities.
Sapporo is unlike any other Japanese city you'll ever visit. Not just because of its food or its climate or even its location but because of how it came to exist in the first place.
Home to Miso ramen, hairy crab, and one of the few lamb dishes you'll find in Japan, Sapporo is full of surprises and is not to be missed.
And yes of course we visited the Sapporo beer museum!

All the time, I just love this channel, the way it's done, Alex's voice... Just perfect.
I was like that too, but recently I pulled the trigger and I am going to Hong Kong thanks to the Attaché guide.
Was just in Sapporo in late December of last year. Full of snow and amazingly inviting. Spent too much time and money on miso ramen and don't regret a thing.
Traveling tip during the snowy winter months: Convenience stores sell rubber and metal cleat straps for your shoes, GET the rubber ones if you don't have the proper footwear and save yourself the shame of falling on your ass in front of dozens of people slipping on ice. The rubber cleats grip better than the metal ones and you won't be tap dancing through stores scratching up the floors.
If you got time Jozankei or Lake Shikotsu are great places to visit with few tourists.
Great tip! We love the little sticky heat patches that the combinis sell too. Life-saving.

Just came back from Sapporo. In the middle of May, We were lucky to witness stunningly beautiful cherry blossoms. Really enjoy the city. Looking forward to returning to Hokkaido University in autumn for its golden gingko avenue.
The content on this channel makes me even more passionate for new journeys, traveling and getting out of my comfort zone while discovering majestic places all around the world. Keep up the great work, guys!
An elderly couple I met while travelling in Sapporo said June or July is a great time to visit. Not too hot, lots of beautiful flowers along the main Odori road. Also, for beer lovers, they hold a beer festival around those months too. I went for the Snow Festival. It was cold and enough snow to last me a few years but I enjoyed it nevertheless :)
That's a great tip. We were there in mid-November and it was pretty cold. I'm keen to return during more temperate months.

It will absolutely be worth your time
But don't think Japan is like you see in manga, anime, and those beautiful outdated stories you find on the internet. Not all people here polite, you still have to look to not be "mistakenly" cheated on the stores, like different prices on cashier than on shelf, not including discounts if there are etc. Look after your belongings as in any other countries. Look out for cars driving crazy and on red light especially in Sapporo. People constantly "pulling" their noses instead blowing into tissues. Just don't expect too much. Think of it as about any other country in Europe for example.
So glad you made a video about Sapporo. I have been, including during the famous Sapporo Snow Festival. It is great place to visit during anytime of the year. Also, the underground walkways are awesome, especially when it is snowing outside. Anyone who visits should do a day trip to Otaru and some other places, too. Including the Nikka Whisky Distillery, less than an hour outside of Sapporo by train.
im going to be in sapporo a week....any other must see places up there? im planning a day trip to hakodate
Yeah we were trying to squeeze in a trip to the Nikka distillery (I have a bottle of it on my desk) but sadly we ran out of time.

Great video as usual but is it just me or is the audio volume going down and up and some dialogue sounds muffed especially during the shots shown when you talk straight to the camera? Hard to hear and have to lower and raise my volume a few times as well.

I've been hoping you would make a Sapporo video as I want to visit there on my next vacation. I was actually in Tokyo when you filmed this so it did put a smile on my face to think we were both in Japan at the same time. BTW, the ATMs of 7-11 are the best and I've never had an issue with them so Lawson and Familymart are just trying to catch up. Thanks for the great video and info as always.
Ha, that's so cool that we were in Tokyo at the same time. 7-11 ATMs are by far the most....consistent. I think that's the fairest way to put it.

I recommend taking a bus from the airport so you can sit.
the train from the airport has less than 20 reserved seats so you have to stand for 40 mins.
We were able to sit in both directions without reserved seats but perhaps we were lucky.

@@attachetravel ...It's actually and easily my #1 favorite city in Japan now. No pretentiousness of Tokyo (Tokyo vibe is very much like LA to me).. has the openness and friendliness of Osaka; but in a much more mature, laid-back and grown-up manner (Osaka and Sapporo is very similar; but, to me, Osaka is better for younger 20-30 year olds, and Sapporo feels better for older 30-40+ crowds)... Best food I've had in Japan bar-none.. best music venues and artists in Japan (and the world I've been told)... best beer.. best confectionary/sweets/desserts.. best snacks.. and the list goes on. I know it's bad to compare and shill the word "best".. but, it's my secret and unpopular (to most gaijins) favorite destination now.

Northern Japan getting some love! Too bad you didn't venture outside of the cities. My favorite parts of Hokkaido are the vast outdoors. There are so many national parks to explore and vast hilly farmland.

Although I love all the videos, the last few have had a travel porn quality to it. Big on visuals but lacking on what attracted me to this site. It was the kinda every man style Alex had. Glad to see this video had more of his personality and humor back. And also, I love the Rundown !! Sounds silly, but wanna know how much a Big Mac costs on the other side of the world, lol.

Awesome as always. One question though. I thought you had a video on Taiwan but I haven't been able to locate it. I was sure it was you. Saw it a couple of years ago while we were planning our first visit and we are going back in April and I wanted to see it again. Sorry if I'm wrong and it was someone else.

Tipping is not offensive. But many companies tell their employees to refuse it. Because we think that providing customers with good services is our honor. At a traditional place like RYO-TEI, tipping is acceptable. It's called "KOKORO ZUKE". You should do it when having a party or ceremony at RYO-TEI. You need to put bills into an envelope which is available at stationery shops.

Another beautiful episode.. I really want to know how annoyed the people were when you were filming and speaking in the public trains and metros..
It went against every fibre of my being as a protocol-centric traveller. But people laughed with us afterwards, they were good sports. It's definitely not something I'd make a habit of though, especially in Japan. We're usually very self-aware and unobtrusive on our shoots - I can't imagine changing that.

Hi. I'll be travelling to Vladivostock with the Trans-Siberian train next winter. Before going back to France I plan a side trip to Japan where I've never been before. For a 3 day trip would you recommend going to Tokyo or Sapporo?

The best service I’ve ever received was from no tipping restaurants. Restaurants should simply pay their workers fairly and include the cost in the price of the food.

I was lucky enough to spend 2 months in Edinburgh this year. I absolutely fell in love with this city. Also, got a glimpse of the Fringe festival which I highly recommend. 😄

Nice video^^ ! after 15 years here is in the tourism industry, seeing the evolution of the business, I may say that sightseeing taxi driver or guide (Japanese) do now accept tips, of course they may refuse at first but it became really commun, specially since the Boum of NISEKO hahahah which spoiled and destroy the beauty of Niseko in less than 10 years...

We know the considerable quality gap between the sushi sold at the prepared food section of the grocery stores versus those served by sushi restaurants in the US , but what about those in Japan, where making a bad piece of sushi is almost sacrilegious? Let me take you on a food tour in Sapporo as I devour sushi in a traditional market and at a supermarket and compare the quality gap between the two channels.

Love the video..is Japan mostly a cash society or are major credit cards widely accepted?
It is ABSOLUTELY a cash society. I've never been, but this is something that is often stated. The japanese have an aversion to credit cards.
Very cash based. Despite the massive amount of automation you'll encounter (restaurants, transit, etc...) many of those machines will be cash only and cash will be the preferred way of paying almost everywhere.
It’s changing as we get closer to the 2020 Olympics, but cash is still very much preferred.
As people have said, it's still pretty cash centric BUT I've noticed a marked increase in the number of outlets that accept credit cards and the variety of cards they accept. You'll have no problem using any type of card at any of the major convenience stores.
