      Easy. He gets the distortion from a Sans-Amp. The almost literal turnkey solution for metal, or mix cutting bass guitar.
      Sans-Amp.
      If you are a metal or rock bass player and you need your bass to cut through a heavy song/mix whether its live or studio... Tech 21 Sans-Amp. Done. Just about all metal and hard rock bassists along with studios own one.

    Dude is an excellent bass player, and I love his less conventional solution to the speed limitations of fingerstyle. Most people just take up picking, and a rare few just play with three fingers and eventually get fast enough to play this kind of stuff, which is what I'm currently working on. But the sort of finger strumming he's doing is pretty wild.

      I'm pretty sure they're to keep his jeans from catching on the beaters. Unless you wear really tight pants - which no self-respecting metalhead would ever do - as a drummer you always run the risk of your kick drum beater getting caught under the cuff of your pants. So my guess is that's what those are for, but I could be wrong.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 5 лет назад +15

      Wait, you're right; they must be weights. I just looked at it on my big flascreen TV and noticed his jeans are tucked into his boots, so my theory's trash. I guess maybe adding some weight helps him play better, or maybe it's just for practice. All I know for sure is that I could never play my drums very well with boots on!

    • @psychogames6219
      @psychogames6219 5 лет назад +8

      Well it's really a combination of both. The key to getting to the climax is the rhythm variations and knowing when to keep a specific rythm and consistant pressure when flicking or galloping..
      The woman is the conductor of sorts. By listening to her every sound and watching every move and breath she takes.
      If it is done just right you and the lady will be perfectly in tune. Just like a band you have to listen and watch every nuance to be in perfect time and rythm together. You must listen to hear body. Don't try to steal the show on your own. She will not like it, think you are unable to produce pleasure effectively.
      You will be kicked out of the band with no reunions!

      I used to kinda do the same for my guitar, except I would use the top 3 strings of a bass (A&D have the first layer of winding;keep G wound). Once the strings have their winding removed, imagine tuning on a guitar a whole octave up, then a 5th down, like so-----
      E=A
      A=D
      D=G

    Man, these two are just tight. Brian made a joke in the beginning about metal being about the guitar and vocals, But that is not true. Every successful metal band has a solid rhythm section. Bass and drums. They are the driving force. I think of it as a cake. The rhythm section is the actual cake itself, what makes up 95% of the whole.The guitars and vocals are the icing, the last 5%. It is not very good to just eat the frosting. And the cake would be kinda dull without the frosting. Black Sabbath is a great example of this. Ward and Butler hold the pocket, Tony and Ozzy made it complete. Same here.

    • @DJones1048
      @DJones1048 7 лет назад +4

      Usually the argument i make for people who say that bass or the rhythm section of the band is unimportant in comparison to guitar or vocals is that you can make a great song without vocals or a lead guitar. You can't make a song without rhythm or in other words, you can't make a song without some sort of drum or bass.

    • @clutchmasters3402

    • @MetalguitarlessonsUK

      I mean...one of the albums commonly heralded as the best metal album of all rime And Juatice For All has quite literally zero bass on it...and yet it was still a huge huuuuuge success. Can you imagine that album being successful if any other instrument was missing? If there were no drums? No guitar? No vocals? No, bass is the only one that can go because it is the important.

      @SineEyed 5 лет назад

      @@tommysuhlami6241 yeah, I think you're right. And now that I think about it, the same could probably be said for a lot of (maybe even most) metal. Absent lyrics, the music will still be enjoyable to listen to. Tbh, as it is I don't pay attention to the words of most of the metal I listen to. Much of the time you can't make out wtf they're even saying, so...
      I'd say to get your music metal af you need two things crucially: chunky shreds and fucking brutal rhythms..

    Picking up a musical instrument for the first time looks really intimidating to me. I'm freakin' 34 now -- way too late to be any good at something like this. BUT -- this video -almost- makes the bass look approachable.

    • @Manimal_Official
      @Manimal_Official 9 лет назад +2

      Bass is the simpler of instruments to learn, not too many complicated chords or anything. But when you get to a very high level of playing, take Dream Theater's John Myung for example, it becomes just as difficult, if not more difficult to pull off than any other instrument. The larger frets and thicker strings make versatility tough. The right hand does most of the work anyways. But as a bass player in a metal band, I would like to suggest bass as it's underappreciated. :)

      +J Wall It's never too late to start. Music is about having fun, not being the best at something. If you work hard you could probably be at this guys level in a few years.
      Bass is a little easier to pick up because of things like a lack chords, but it presents its own challenges. I play bass in a thrash band, and write some of the guitar, too. The biggest difference to me is the amount of physical effort it takes to play bass at guitar speed in metal. The other thing I run into a lot is you have to be very considerate of what you play, because you don't want to walk on the guitar or the drums, but still play something interesting.

    • @joeywall4657

      ***** Haha, well, I'm not trying to sell you on it. I'm definitely not trying to sell the video short, either, there's a lot of time and effort in it.
      Budget instruments have grown in quality so much that it's not very expensive to get started. I recommend Talkbass.com if you're interested in learning. Lots of people know their stuff over there.
