Modun's Song - Epic Turkic Music

  • Опубликовано: 18 июн 2023
  • Music & vocals by Farya Faraji. Please note that this isn't reconstructed Turkic music of the time period, only modern music using various influences from diverse Turkic cultures, as well as Chinese and Mongolian influence given the subject matter. This is a song I composed using the texts provided by the excellent I Love Languages channel for the language Proto-Turkic, the reconstructed common ancestor of all Turkic languages spoken before 500 B.C. This ballad about Modun is effectively the continuation to my ballad on Touman, who was his father. Modun was a renowned chieftain and leader of the Xiongnu, who came to power after killing his father, and he waged war against the Han dynasty of China.
    Lyrics in Proto-Turkic:
    Mao-tunnun ogey anasi Tabgaclig erti.
    Ögey anasi Mao-tunnu sebmer erti.
Mao-tun Ögey inisini utdu, bödke olturtu.
    Mao-tunta nence bala bar (turur)?/
    Mao-tunta bir bala bar (turur).
Jiyu atasi Mao-tunka kömek etgen ebe ogul turur.
Tou-man törunün örünten ciksar ogulunu öltürmek küseti.
    Ogulu Mao-tun ani öltürtü.
    Mao-tun Dong-hu, Yue -chi,
Han yagifi birle bolgan sünülürünü yenti.
    English translation:
    Modun's stepmother was Chinese.
    His stepmother didn't love Modun.
Modun won his little stepbrother and sit the throne.
How many children does Modun have?
    Modun has one child.
Jiyu was a good son who help his father Modun.
Touman wanted to violate the custom and kill his son.
    His son Modun killed him.
Modun defeated his battles with Donghu, Yuechi and Han enemies.

Hello Mr. Farya Faraji, I'm your listener from China, and as an amateur of Altaic studies, I'm thrilled to see someone creating songs based on the theme of Modu Chanyu and Tonyukuk of the later Turkic Khaganate. According to the Chinese sources I've come across, "Modu" is likely the honorific title of this Chanyu, similar to how "Chinggis" (Great Ocean) is added before the title of Genghis Khan. Adding an honorific before an official title is an ancient tradition among these steppe nomadic peoples. Unfortunately, due to the lack of attention from Chinese historians of that era, the actual name of this Chanyu before acquiring the title "Modu" has not been preserved in Chinese historical texts today.

Modun was quite a legendary figure in Chinese history and to a certain degree mystified by stories such as how he trained his soldiers to be so obedient that they shot Modun’s father when ordered, and how he defeated the Donghu tribe by faking weakness by answering to all the demands until land was asked for… truly the figure to initiate the subsequent thousands of years of history between the nomadic and sedentary civs

Modu had also subjected an equally large empire of China to the payment of tribute. Modu was in many ways Alexander«s equal, maybe even superior when it comes to the extent of his conquests. The two rulers were also similar in that they were both suspected of having assassinated their fathers (Touman and Philip) in order to seize the throne. Modu, however, was clearly the more competent politician and administrator of the two.

Mete Khan was the one who established the modern decimal military organization. He split his forces into 10/100/1000/10000 etc. Each ruled by corresponding commander. This can be observed in the modern Turkish army. Onbaşı rank can be translated as "Head of ten", Yüzbaşı, an officer rank in the Turkish army, can be translated as "head of hundred,". Also, another officer rank called Binbaşı means "head of thousand".

The history of the Gaoju is given in the respective entry in WS 103 + (pp. 2505-2508); until the beginning of Text 1.056/B it is extracted as follows.
    高車,蓋古赤狄之餘種也初號為狄歷,北方以為敕勒,諸夏以為高車、丁零。 其語略與匈奴同而時有小異,或云其先匈奴之也。
The Gaoju are probably the remaining tribes of the ancient Chidi [lit. 'the red Di']. Initially they were called Dili. People in the north called them Chile, whereas people in China proper called them Gaoju or Dingling.
Their language is roughly the same as that of the Xiongnu but at times has minor differences from that. Some say that their ancestors were the nephew of [i.e. indirectly related to] the Xiongnu.

I think Modun or Modu Shanyu's real name could be „Bodun Yabgu“, it means tribal Yabgu. Because Turkic languages had often this b to m or other way around consonant Switches. For example Attilas father Mundchuk would be in modern Turkish Boncuk. The same case with the words for I am in Turkic languages , in Turkish it’s „Ben“ I think in Sakha Turkic it’s „Bin“. In Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Kazakh,Turkmen, Uzbek it’s „Men/Man“. Another option would be „Baatyr Yabgu“, because the Oghuz Turkic legends about Oghuz Khan in other Central Asian people (Mongolians, Kazakhs etc.) are known as Epos of Baatyr. Moduns father could be Tümen Tengrikut or Tuman Tengriqut. Tümen means „thousands“ and „Tuman/Duman“ means smoke.

It's amazing how much of this proto-language is perfectly understandable with just a basic understanding of one of its descendants (Turkish, in my case). Definitely not the case with most of the Indo-European languages today.

    • @Flozone1
      @Flozone1 Год назад +12

First is the issue of its age. Proto-Turkic is much younger than Proto-Indo-European. Second is the mobility of the Turks. The Turks were in contact with each other for a good part of their history. This had preserved linguistic similarity, while the Indo-Europeans all moved away from each other.

Mao falan yok yani sağda solda Maotun demeyin. Han ve Tarkandan önce Türklerde Tarkan unvanını görebiliyoruz tarihte ilk kez stepleri tek bir düzenli imparatorluğa dönüştüren Tengrinin gölgesi Cengiz Han'ın Budist rahibe mektubunda Hanımızın eski zamanları diye bahsettiği Kutlu Kağana esenlikler olsun uçmağa varsın.

What sources did you use when you composed the text? Sorry for nitpicking here, I just have my personal gripes with some reconstructions. Though on the choice of vocabulary, Tabgač is probably not "chinese" at this point, but Tabgač, a Turkic or Mongolic tribe. The Tabgač migrated to China and founded the Tuoba-Wei dynasty there and became sinisized. This happened after the Han dynasty fell in the 4th century. It is like with Kitai for China in Russian. The Khitay (originally Kitań) were a (para-)Mongolic people who lived north of China and then migrated there and made their kingdom in the 11th century. The became sinisized and they were the first Chinese some people encountered, so the name stuck. Same with the Tabgač a few centuries earlier.

While its true that there was some controversy about the origin of the Huns, the consensus after recent decades is that they were Turks of Oghuric affiliation, mostly based on credible studies confirming that the vast majority of attested Hunnic names, as well as all Hunnic successor clans are of evident Oghur Turkic origin.
All Hunnic tribes (entirely Oghur Turkic) :
Akatziri, Onogurs, Utigurs, Sabirs, Bulgars, Saragurs, Kutrigurs, Barsils, Balanjars
Recorded Hunnic names of Turkic origin :

Emmedzur = horse lord; from Turkic Ämäcur
Eskam / Esqam = companion of the shaman; from Turkic Eŝkam
