I made a rod without a reel. Figerglass with a small drum facing outwards with 400 yards of 80lb braid. I use it for catfish. I just drop my bait below me. Mostly on a boat. Gloves are used lol! No cranking and fighting. All pull. It's exhilarating when I have a 60lb+ fish on the end. Sounds ridiculous but I enjoy the fight.
how things have changed,built many a rod from scratch,Used rope with epoxy for rod handles ( Grips ) and PVA mix with water for cluing thread to rod,,and then a couple coats of lacquer to seal,all turned by hand on the lounge room floor,,still use me Black fish rod to day,,wow just thinking ,,way back in 1978 i made that one.

That would depend on rod curve,,and ifin is an over head or under hand set up,,on an over head the trick is to have runners so as when rod is in full bend the line does not contact rod,braid going of ya spool at a rate of knot will cut ya rod blank like a hack saw, On under hand rods,try to space runners so as the line tend to follow natural curve of blank,,you won't need as many as an over head,,but i think ( and that Just Me ) more is better, and finally don't skimp on quality of runners,,these days it is so confusing on what to use,,a good hard guide,with anti friction quality is the go,,

My grandfather has been building rods for 60 plus years. I really need to learn this art before his passes.

Do you like cork or foam in the but of the rod, I'm a big cork fan.I think it's more sensitive, what's your opinion.

When I was taught to make my rod they told us to double thread the guides, will a single thread over the guide still be as strong as a double?
