For my store-bought socks, I bought some elastic bands for sewing, ran it through the weave, then tied a knot to form a loop. It's long enough to stretch from the end of the sock and hook on the reel handle. That keeps the sleeve from slipping off.
Before cutting your sleeve material to length, try wrapping a piece of masking tape around the sleeve at your cut point, then cut through the center of the tape, leaving wrapped tape on each cut end. This will prevent fraying and make it easier to feed into the heat shrink tube...much like a shoe lace. Cutting through the center of the tape leaves two ends prepped and ready to go. Great video btw...going to make some for my sibs before our annual family fishing trip! Cheers from Mizzou!
Thanks for the video. I don't use rod socks on my rods in my boat very often but what I do like to do is to have my rods completely covered while they're not in use, in my shop. I don't leave my reels on my rods. I had been having them covered with custom sewn cloth covers, but this might be the ticket now. "Tight Lines and Full Limits To Ya"
Never understood the need for rod sleeves until i saw what you did at 1:09. I don't have a fancy bass boat only a jon boat so rod socks are still usless to regular guys like me who don't have those compartments.
Thanks for watching Johny, some anglers use them when they are traveling. When you have 5 or 6 rods and you want yo lash them together to through them in a car the socks protect the rods.
Missed ISE this year. I have a construction project at home and it gone sideways and needed me to be here. Definitely would like to get together this year. I am headed to CL for a week in mid Feb trying to get some time there before tournaments take lake for Spring and Summer.
Seems like the way to go. Any I’ve bought online are too long. I always carry my rods in a cal coast rod mule so this will really help with bulk and efficiency. Thanks!
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 Nope. I’m recovering from surgery at the moment. Another 3 weeks probably before I can get out. Hoping prespawn will be heating up. I’m spending my time organizing all my plastics. Fun (not).

Angler Steve Cooper, a hearty 'Hola' from our Mediterranean waters, here in Barcelona city, Catalonia! Anyhow, congrats & thanks for your super 'tips & tricks', really appreciate your sharing such logical & helpful design ideas. 🌿🙏🧜♂️
Since day one I have cut down my rod socks. I always put a small zip tie on the end then put a longer length of shrink wrap tubing on it. I don't fully shrink the shrink tube, only the part where the tie is. This allows the tip of the rod to settle in the shrink tube keeping it from ever poking through the mesh.
For a spinning rod-which diameter would work best to slide easily over the 1st eye. I've got a couple of store bought socks that are too tight for my liking on the 1st eye.
Good tip but I bought mine last year on Amazon 12 sleeves for $18. They were already finished in different colors and patterns. Now I know what to do if I need more.
Great idea. I love diy. The 1 inch expandable sleeving looks like it fits casting rods, but what size for spiinning rods? 2" or 1-1/2? And I assume that there is no real substitute for the heat gun which I don't happen to have presently. Thanks again. I plan to try it out.
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 yours is better than mine. I like the way you did the opening of the sock. Mine, all I did was melt the fray and then rolled it under. I like the bottle idea.
I 3d print treble hook guards, it is really nice NOT getting stung by the hooks and I could keep all the lures in a bag if I wanted without them getting tangled. I like rolling back the end of heats hrink like a sleeve it gives a nicer border when it shrinks than the edge of the plastic.
Thats a great idea. Wish I had the know how. Unending supply of hook guards would be great to have. You need to do a how to video. Thanks for watching.
Hi just found your channel and I'm very interested on making rod socks for my much larger rods ( surf rods ) and i see in your video you show a rod tube that secures your rods is that a product that anyone can buy and install into their own boat.Larry
The rod tubes are standard built in on all bass boats. The tubes are made of a light weight 2 in. PVC pipe so I would think you could make your own to fit any rod or boat. Good Luck.
The one in. will work about half way up the rod. that works for storing in rod tubes on the boat but they will not cover the full rod. You will need 2 in. I am working on a method to fuse 1 and 2 in togather so you have a nice tight fit rot the first 2/3 of the rod and a bit more room for the larger guides near the reel. If you have ideas let me know. Thanks for watching.
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 Might try the braided tubing that is heat shrinkable on its own. and use 1 tube shrinking it gradually as you get nearer to the bottom? Just a thought
I like using the 1 in material for a tight fit. You can make them shorter if you have trouble pulling them over the last rod guide or go to 11/4 in material. I really like the tight fit for boat rod lockers. Thanks for watching.
You can either use 1in or 1 1/4in and make the sleeve short so they don'tgo down past the larger guides on the but section of the rod. I like this method when storing your rods in rod lockers on your boat. I will also use a bait wrap if you are using a bait with treble hooks. You may need to go up to a 2in sock material to make a full length cover. I like the tight fitting socks, you can easily fit 2 rods in each boat storage tube and they are also easer to lash together when bundling them when going on a trip. Thanks for watching.
I have a question, I like the look of the 1" which I'm sure works well for micro guides but do they work well for regular size rod eyes? Also what size do you recommend for spinning rods? Thanks!!!!!
The 1 in will work fine for rods with reg size eyes. I usually keep my socks to about 5 ft so ithe sock never goes over the last guide. Same thing with spinning rods , I go with ii1/2 in but that will still not fit over the last guide so you can measure and get the sock to go up just to the last guide. Hope that helps.
Spinning rods are tricky. I in will usually not cover the entire rod. 1 1/2 in will usually cover down to the last 2 rod guides on spinning rods. Thanks so much for watching and sending in a comment. Good luck.
Good idea m the only thing I can disagree with is not getting close enough to the reel. Can be problematic. I get it. Now, tough guys, no gloves. Safety for others should be tantamount.
He should have made a test run on this video, keeps repeating the same thing over and over. It gets a little hard to watch. Great sleave, but if you don't know that a "HEAT GUN GETS HOT" you should not be using one.
I've been waiting for years for this video. Nobody makes them long enough for fly rods; plus they want too much $$ for them. Thank you much!!!
Thanks Erich. Stick with the 1 in materal.
