1:39 The Shield controller actually works via WiFi. I'm sure the Remote is the same. WiFi Direct or something like that. Faster response times than Bluetooth and sync super fast!
***** I thought I heard Nvidia say that the Remote was bluetooth. Which would make sense because the remote doesn't need super low latency to work right. The controller does though.
Looks great. Your review was a bit more brief compared to others I've seen yet more thorough in coverage of features (i.e., Kodi, emulation, pc streaming), so thank you. I think I'm sold.
This guy is underrated. Lon all your reviews are very well-spoken and get right to the point. What's more you seem to cover all the "big questions" a potential consumer may have!
***** exactly! And no other system will ever be so impressive in comparison to the previous generation. Dreamcast took a long step from the 32-bit era and even made the N64 feel old. Also thanks to its 8MB of VRAM, it even made the PS2 seem inferior in terms of texturing ;)
DrxSlump Loved code veronica . . And yeah the dreamcast was a beast . . Better cleaner textures and also had a sharper overall image compared to the ps2's muddy graphics. That and the only water cooled home console!
DrxSlump Not to mention the Dreamcast had a wired ethernet port built right in; also incredibly ahead of its time. Have some very fond memories of playing Phantasy Star Online on my Dreamcast when I was a kid!
On the comments regarding games and external harddrive storage, I know that with the Shield Portable I can go into settings and move certain Games and apps from the Shield Hub (Google Play Store) between the internal storage and the microSD card. roughly 80% Of the apps and games I have can be transferred between the 2 storage medias. Should be the same for this device as well
Your video makes me want to buy this device(Like all your video do) it would've been nicer if you specifically said the price(if you did, I must have missed it) when I've enough money, I'm sure to buy one with your affiliate link! Keep up the good work!
Hey Lon. Loved the video. Waiting for the Pro version. But one thing I thought someone else mention is if you install the HdHomerun app then a live TV card will pop up. You should bee able to view your live TV right through the Shield. Would you be able to test and show how it works and performs. Keep up the great work.
+Tjaldid Default streaming is just for the Nvidia setup where you select the games/applications (you can add new ones) to stream; that means they'll be launched on demand with a low latency high quality responsiveness. That is a per-application stream. However, you may install a remote desktop app on the shield and access the whole desktop (that may have a very little latency, though, due to window's RDP protocol).
To move an app to a SD card go to settings, apps, tap on what app you want to move, and then it will take you to another screen that will say "move to sd card".
So I have had my nvidia shield console for 3 days now and I am loving it. As fast as you can pretty much click and it just responds so well. I have tried out grid , a few downloaded games, netflix , and kodi. all work fantastic. My only concern is that when Grid becomes a payed service is it going to be worth the price. Right now I just dont feel there are enough games for it. That could change in time which I really hope does. I just dont see myself paying $10 or even $15 bucks for only 20 games that are on the grid server now. I really don't count the 10 lego games that are on there.
Richard Sigler From what I've read it doesn't currently, but might be possible later. Only lossy codecs for now. Still, I'd be nice to have Lon confirm this.
***** Better late than never. Thanks for the update. Look forward to the new video. Hopefully version 2 of the shield doesn't overlook this feature as it was the main deciding factor for me to not buy it.
My brother has a tendency to use voice nav with the XBOX 360 & XBOX ONE as well as his GPS! Actually, I am curious if you can look up NETFLIX and RUclips videos with voice. That would be a leg up on XBOX & Playstation!
With support for 4k output on these newer devices could you review that also. I have a cheap but great performing 4k SEIKI TV that lacks the built in 4k streaming apps (ie NetFlix or RUclips) of a Samsung and this type device might be a great addition.
But how well does the nVidia remote work with Kodi? I wouldn't want to use the controller. And the remote is expensive to buy it and then not be able to use it in Kodi.
Could you do reviews that show the native playback capabilities of media players as well as how well it handles Kodi, Plex, and your other preferred programs? I am looking at getting a possible replacement for my aging WD TV Live Hub. At the moment I am not having any problems with my WD machine. It is only a matter of time though for it to wear out.
What's the biggest size External Hard Drive this device would recognise? I know that other android tv devices has a limitation of 3TB? Please let me know
Good stuff. I really think boxes like this will be the next generation of gaming consoles for casual gamers. Especially if Apple decides to gear the next Apple TV towards gaming.
Thanks for the video but it seems you shouldn't have rushed to do this video. You got a few things wrong. The controller is Wifi direct. I believe apps can be moved to the sd card in the app settings. I'm not sure if you noticed but there is a touchpad on the controller. Thanks for showing emulation though. I've been dying to see that running! =)
***** You are using an sd card right? Usb won't work. I have the first two shield devices and that's how it works there. I know the option exists because i saw a video of someone showing there issues with it i'm gonna be getting the box tomorrow for emulation to replace my Ouya. Btw when you said dolphin emulator doesn't work did it not play games at all or was it just like a slideshow and impossible to play?
Good review, but the controller at least (I don't know about the remote), is not Bluetooth, it has its own WiFi signal between the box, that's why you can't use it with a PC unless its plugged in for example. And you didn't go over Nvidia Grid streaming.
please somebody help me. I have a freeze black screen with this description. there are four boxes: first box says twitch, second Auto Record, third Manual Record and last Screenshot. I don't know how to eliminate it.
I saw an icon for "photos & videos" on home screen of the box. can you tell me more about that? I want to know if this box has native media player and photo gallery app?
So what I think you are saying is if you run Marshmallow on the nividia tv 16gb you can store all of your content on the external SD card saving your internal storage and pocket book is that what you ment? Thanks
Mine doesn't work. I log in via Google on my pc and tv but then on the TV it just ask me to log in again and I can't get pass that screen. I have a GTX 980ti Microsoft 10, I7 3930k etc. Have the recommended router and everything is on the same network so I don't understand why it's not working.
I landed here from the link you left on your Amazon review, this is one of the best product reviews that I've ever watched, answered many of my questions. Couple of questions, I don't mind waiting for Andriod M, so assuming getting Andriod M on this device, is there any reason why I would want to buy 500G version? Also have you tired pairing two controllers and play multi player games on the Grid or locally stored? I see a lot of games supporting two players on the Grid (mostly Lego games), and I am wondering if the device is capable of it. Thanks a lot.
I have question for you if you have time. I have set up my Plex Media server set up on my surface pro. I do have remote connection set up and working. the problem I have is once the PC goes to sleep I can't access any of my media. The server shows offline.. is there way to access my library?
Awesome video does the nvidia shield have the original hitman series ? And how do you have to buy a year subscription to play AAA titles and normal games like with ps plus membership?
Great review, Lon! I was wondering, which emulators besides Dreamcast and N64 are available for this? Would be great if I could run Turbografx 16/CD, Genesis/Sega CD, or even Jaguar games. I have an Ouya but this looks so much better!
I'm not sure I missed it in the video but is it easy/doable to set up game streaming from your Steam library? That is one of the biggest features for me, and I am considering getting Shield TV this week. Also, is surround sound supported when you stream games? Please answer, lets say I get games on my laptop, but I dont have a good graphics card to run it, but can I still stream it to my tv? The game I got is Need for Soeed Rivals, its a relative new game
***** I'd be curious to see how running the Android TV Remote app compares to the $50 remote. The controller also supports hooking up a headphone though right?

atarileaf ouya uses tegra 3 (fairly old and crap cpu), this uses tegra x1 + maxewell (the most powerful cpu and gpu nvidia has ever made) , to power of Tegra x1 falls just a lilbit behind the xbox one but i only consumes 10w at max power while xbox one works at 100w minimun, is more than twice the performance of Xbox 360. Tegra x1 is the most powerful cpu per watts human kind has ever created. ouya has nothing on shield TV.. trash ouya give it to a shild i dont know..
atarileaf PS4 - 1.8 TeraFlops, Xbox One - 1.3TeraFlops, Shield Console - 1 Teraflops, how ever nor ps4 or xbox one can get 4k output. the only downside i see is RAM, both ps4 and xbox one run with 8gb ram, HOW EVER you can get a fast mirco SD, root Shield TV a posibly increase the virtual RAM.
Lon you have to do a video please on how you did that Blue ray movie and MKV file to play on the Shield. I just ordered a shield myself. Did you burn your blue ray movie some how to a MKV file to then play on the Shield? "Perplexed" Thanks

wow. you answered literally every question I had about the device. Its like you read my mind. good stuff
I got the other 2 shield device and use them every day, waiting for mine to arrive. Thanks for covering every question I had :)
Great review!
The only review that covers KODI, thank you !!!
do you know if it support MKV 3D too ?
Excellent Review once again Lon !
I'm getting mine delivered today and i can't wait to put my hands on it
Just got mine for 149 black friday, along with a free nvidia shield remote! Can't wait 'til it arrives to test it out.
Dreamcast was sooooo far ahead of its time. It still doesn't look bad and we're talking about 1998 hardware!
***** exactly! And no other system will ever be so impressive in comparison to the previous generation. Dreamcast took a long step from the 32-bit era and even made the N64 feel old. Also thanks to its 8MB of VRAM, it even made the PS2 seem inferior in terms of texturing ;)

DrxSlump thats why it failed so hard.. ppl were not ready
DrxSlump Not to mention the Dreamcast had a wired ethernet port built right in; also incredibly ahead of its time. Have some very fond memories of playing Phantasy Star Online on my Dreamcast when I was a kid!
You deserve way more subscribers, great channel and reviews.

This device is very impressive! Cool video Lon :D
Best review of this console!!! Thanks my friend!
Awesome review. Great, great job. I'm subscriber now.
Nice job reviewing! Subscribed :)
Pro tip; the silver triangle thing on the bottom of the controller is actually a touch sensitive surface you can use as a trackpad.
You can install apps on the sd by default, you can change it in the setting dude. Great review!
Just thought I would mention since I know you were a fan of Nostalgia as well. It has finally been released for the shield!
Thank you for the excellent review.
an in-depth look at more emulators would be nice, particularly retroarch.

Can't wait till I pick this up after work! Gonna try the UAE4Droid app, so I can play Amiga games on it. Nostalgia :D
Thanks Lon, i will just get the logitech wireless keyboard with built-in trackpad. So far i'm loving my Shield Tv, NVIDIA nailed it !
It'll run the PSP emulator as well. So there is more emulation after Dreamscast on the Nvidia SHIELD TV,

this guy looks like a batman villain.
Lmao that's a good one man
+deadguy718 riddle me this...
nice review. i subbed
Great review (as usual). Thx. Can you test whether or not it will pass through DTS-MA and TrueHD (Kodi).

An emulator you can try in these reviews is the ppsspp psp emulator as its a more modern console and try to find a very demanding game for it
I'd love to see this as well. Games were hit or miss on the Shield tablet with ppsspp and Im hoping the X1 kicks it up a notch.
Android allows you to load apps to SD cards / external storage. But they leave that option up to each developer.
would really be helpful if you did a test over wireless instead of ethernet to see the difference in lag
How do you delete photos/videos from the gallery and how do you upload video from the gallery to youtube?
Great review.
What's that Apple II floppy holder above the apple II at 12:27?
Where is the Benchmark
Great Review as always Lon! I pre-ordered the Pro and I'm waiting patiently for it. Do you find yourself using the voice navigation a lot?
My brother has a tendency to use voice nav with the XBOX 360 & XBOX ONE as well as his GPS! Actually, I am curious if you can look up NETFLIX and RUclips videos with voice. That would be a leg up on XBOX & Playstation!
Can you stream your own pc games at 4k? Or is the local streaming limited to 1080p?
If you do a follow up please show off a little Grid game streaming. Thanks
With support for 4k output on these newer devices could you review that also. I have a cheap but great performing 4k SEIKI TV that lacks the built in 4k streaming apps (ie NetFlix or RUclips) of a Samsung and this type device might be a great addition.

***** oh, how long does the battery last on a charge? I had a Minix M1 remote that needed to be charged every two days, it was such a pain in the ass.
Nice review Lon. Can you use Plex Home Theater with this?
But can it play minesweeper at 4k???
Also grid gaming! That could be huge if it works well and they get all the triple AAA titles. Please review!
Could you do reviews that show the native playback capabilities of media players as well as how well it handles Kodi, Plex, and your other preferred programs? I am looking at getting a possible replacement for my aging WD TV Live Hub. At the moment I am not having any problems with my WD machine. It is only a matter of time though for it to wear out.
as soon as this thing gets a legit amazon prime video app I am getting one.
What's the biggest size External Hard Drive this device would recognise? I know that other android tv devices has a limitation of 3TB? Please let me know
Yes finally! An Android TV device that let's your have full access of the USB port. Thank you Nvidia!
One question: Can you do a review showing the 4k capabilities of the Nvidia Shield TV? Thanks again.
Good stuff. I really think boxes like this will be the next generation of gaming consoles for casual gamers. Especially if Apple decides to gear the next Apple TV towards gaming.

i own 80 games on steam but i no longer have a gaming pc. Can i still play my steam games with this via wifi?
:( thanks for the reply
please an important question : does streaming pc games on it requires good router and a good internet speed ? or just a good router ?
Are you able to still use the host PC for other things whilst streaming through the Nvidia Shield ?

Is the HDhomerun view app not available yet.... if not can it be side loaded?
Can you use an internet browser like chrome or firefox on it, like a pc
Can you use twitch an stream games like the shield tablet.if so can show it please?
Thank you
Can you upgrade Kodi as new versions come out? Can you configure Kodi anyway you want it? Thanks for this review.
I don't have a cable card so would the other hd homerun models will work on the shield?
can you download the legit direct tv sunday ticket app to the shield? I have paid access to the app but am also looking for a device that can use kodi

how reponsive/accurate is the voice feature on the remote? and would you deem the remote a worthy add on?

Hi Lon, great video as always! Do you know how the Minix Neo 8x Plus goes vs this one?
Also, is the geforce stream support local co-op multiplayer like fifa....?
Can you load N64 roms on to a flash drive and play them on the Nvidia Console?
Does the controller version have steam ? (Not while streaming
Hi, does that wireless keyboard you have there work with the Nvidia?
This looks like a great replacement for the ouya, which I hear is a dying platform. Would you recommend it as an ouya replacement? I used the ouya mostly for Kodi and classic gaming emulation.
Thanks Lon, so do you know if the Robert Broglia emulators will work on the Nvidia Shield?

André Fortin it can only stream games from your PC though unless you want android games but that's not at the level of console games
Is it better than a Stream Mini for a HTPC?
What is the FPS and max resolution for local pc games streaming?

+Lon Seidman Thank you Lon!
can i stream my games on the console even if im 2 miles away from my computer?
Can it output to a 1080i resolution?
*****
Yes. Mine has and HDMI port in the back oddly enough.
What if my pc can't run some games, will i be able to play them on the shield?
Can you test the Grid gaming service?
Hello. This nvidia shield can play sound through mini component Bluetooth like Sony Shake, LG, etc? Or it has optical audio SPDIF?
how do i find out the version of the nvidia shield i have been sent because i have looked at the controller that came with my brand new NVIDIA SHIELD BOUGHT on 03/february/2015.
and the controller has the house symbol on it under the power button which shows it is in fact the older controller.
instead of a circle on the new controller shown on the video.
this leads me to believe digital river the official outlet of nvidia has sent me the old
K1 Processor when infact they advertise the X1 on there site.
i realized when i watched the video again i made a mistake on what he said the K1 is the tablet version and the X1 processor is in the nvidia shield.
Is it upgradable internally at all? A tear down would be great.
Thanks Lon, keep up the great videos!
Can you please anyone show me a tutorial on downloading recast for the Dreamcast. Can never do it. Also GameCube please
