    This drill was KEY for me into learning the pro swing. Focus on shoulder turn for a week and five buckets. Shoulder turn is the breakthrough for me. I cannot stress how critical this drill is..... I know I say that a lot BUT I really really mean it here. Shoulders are huge!!!

    It might be obvious to many but this drill also gives you a visual to your shoulder plane by looking at the plane of the shaft which will be in front of your face. You can do this drill inside by using the door jam to replace the alignment shaft in the ground. On a par 3 if you have to wait on the group in front you can use a ball washer stanchion as the alignment shaft.

    Again Eric, really good content. What’s amazing with this drill is how much more correctly your legs work on the downswing. Bcuz I get too flat, it stops my legs from thrusting upward bcuz what???? They’re already up from never loading correctly

    Eric, I have been specifically working on tilt in the backswing because it was helping me stay more centered in the backswing. Now, however, I must be over doing it and while it has helped for one issue(upper body sway to right) it has caused me to move my head down and towards the ball. So I am guessing I might be overdoing the tilt?. If this is the case, I am guessing I need to find that happy ground in between.

      you need to use video to confirm the FEELS to hit the checkpoints
      Checkpoint: keep head in circle you started
      This would be a good training station to use to keep forehead on noodle. Don't come off nor press into....that would help

    I try to read golf instruction books from Toski and even as old as Percy Boomer/early 20th century) and when I see Toski talk of left side taking club back ...maybe he meant this left shoulder down
    With left shoulder down the left arm and side unit gets activated and takes the club away automatically! different words but same concept maybe?

    Question: if I use a longer stick, should it hit the guide stick in the same spot (height wise) as I turn my body back to the left?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 года назад +1

      I would have to try to confirm (I dont know) but in my mind the answer would be yes.
      If you need more tilt and normally turn flat it would be better to hit too low and over do in practice

    Love your Channel, am a subscriber & anxiously await new videos. Have a question about the backswing / takeaway. I’m 48 with two total hip replacements (lifetime of hockey). Up here in Alaska so all the drills you provide are being used in the winter. I tend to sway off the ball in my takeaway and have found the Mike Austin hip pivot to be an easy way to let my hips flow naturally while keeping my head from swaying off the ball. I’m also noticing that not many other instructors teach the Austin pivot & seems to me that they call the move towards the ball a sway that tends to get stuck on the follow thru when you slide the hips forward. Also, I’m noticing that when Austin explains the hip / pivot slowly that it looks a bit different when he’s swinging ‘live’. As a matter of fact. It looks like what you coach. Is this because it’s just more of a ‘feel’ for him ? Can you talk about this in a video perhaps with some deeper explanation. Basically how to go from the swinging (sway) of the hips forward to a complete natural finish. Because when I let my hips move freely in the pivot to forward I do get stuck (perhaps early extension) I’ve got a problem getting all the way to the finish after getting weight to my lead side if I don’t super concentrate or get lucky. Please HELPl

    Interesting. Not unlike Mike Austin's compound pivot of the hips (pivot and tilt the hips) lead leg flexing and knee moves out toward the ball. Trail side lengthens and lead side shortens. I like it!

    One question..when the club is grounded there is already a angle with the ground. So to increase that how does one rake the club away? In other words does the left shoulder dip first which moves the club or does the torso turn and then does the shoulder dip?there is no room asthe ground is in the way!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 года назад

      The right shoulder goes up and back...that lifts the club as the left one goes down

  • @billread5891
    @billread5891 4 года назад +2

    Very nice tip! Is the tilt of the shoulders about the same angle if swinging a driver?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Thanks, Bill!
      IT will be more FLAT.....BECAUSE.....your setup posture is more upright...
      90* shoulder turn to back line is a decent general rule

    Eric...I know you've discussed the left shoulders role on the downswing...any chance you two can show that portion of the swing? AMs tend to quickly tilt back to the trail side immediately to start the downswing instead of keeping or even dropping the left shoulder lower as the downswing begins.

    Eric, this is another great video. Could you do another video of the very same thing only using a driver instead of a 7 iron. I would think with a driver you would not want to have such a steep backswing.

      Yes....
      but....
      Because you are setup taller (less bent over) with driver
      Your left shoulder won't go AS far down....but still 90* to back line is a good general guide

    When I do the drill and I 'exaggerate' goong very low with the lead shoulder, my head doesn't seem to keep up with the massive 90° turn... Am I not flexible/mobile enough or is it normal to feel have that tension there? Thanks

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Hey Max! I would have to see exactly what you are doing to say for sure. I would say as a general statement the idea would be to get your shoulders turning 90* to your back line.
      If you need to go a smidge flatter to get a full turn I would GENERALLY be OK with that.
      IF you dont get it sorted sign up at www.cogornogolf.com so you can send me your swings!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад +1

      I would say you would have a few basic options
      1. Figure out the best way to swing around what you are capable of doing. What other pieces could you adjust to help you turn more (closed stance, foot flare, leg extension, etc)
      2. Work with someone to improve your mobility/flexibility.

  • @bjohnson515

    most amateurs stand too far from ball, flattening the swing
    Watching pros hit wedges really demonstrates shoulder tilt, chest on ball compression
    They stand so close to ball! One can sense the trap/compression.
    Byron Nelson said you cant stand too close to ball....clearly an exaggeration but made the point

      LOL....no no silly.....I have 9,000,000 examples of those style backswing RUINING downswings....just because you have 2 anomalies that make it work.....DOES NOT prove a point. They are anomalies my friend. Talent trumps all.
      9,000,000 backswing matters
      2 that it doesnt
      I will skip the part where I explain my past 13 years coaching, the amount of swings I have seen, the real lessons I have given, etc, etc.
      Can you make a BAD backswing work? Lol of course. Does that backswing "not matter".....thats silly.

    So why does more shoulder tilt lead to more compression? Physics lesson please.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Search my name and "compress"....there should be 6-7 videos that come up.
      Watch those.....this left shoulder move makes all that easier.
      In short. Lead shoulder more down....body closer to the ground....makes you have to shorter the trail arm and wrist.....which to hit the ball solid you have to turn enough to get the shaft forward enough to get low point forward......shaft more forward lowers the dynamic loft...lower dynamic loft with angle of attack neutral leads to more compression.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Make sure you turn enough....atleast 90* with shoulders ...
      If you already do that....then shift more pressure to trail foot...
      But RECORD yourself and adjust based on what is ACTUALLY happening not based on feel
      You might FEEL left but be perfectly centered
