  • At many different levels of being an artists, we struggle with phases in which we find it difficult to get feedback on our work. In this video, I talk about 3 such stages in which I regularly find artists struggling to find feedback and encouragement, and I do my best to offer solutions.
Below are Amazon affiliate links for some of the supplies I use in these videos.
Feel free to use the links if you're interested in supporting me with your purchase:
The type of sketchbook I use is the Earthbound Cachet sketchbook, available here:
    amzn.to/2nx7IoT
The white pen I use is a White Gelly Roller Gel pen available at most arts and crafts stores, or on Amazon...
    amzn.to/2ng3tLW
Red/Blue Colored pencil from Prismacolor :

You have an amazing personality, a great balance of reality and raw honesty. But the best part is that your really passionate and I dare to say your the definition of being humane.
Your artwork here also turned out really great, I love the process and the subtle touches that make this artwork unique. The added white in the end I did not expect as a first time viewer and it came out well. I also liked that pencil at the end with the red and blue, for warming up and cooling the artwork.
A thumbs up from me, thank you.

I am so guilty of hoarding references more often than I take the time to actually learn from them by drawing. I love your videos because they get me to MAKE more art rather than just collecting it.

What I find most interesting about your advice is that you project a lot of empathy during it. You seem like you're always conscious of what words will hurt to hear and softening the blow and when a little bit of levity and satire will make more of an impact. I especially liked this particular video because it can easily be applied to other creative outlets beyond just drawing. Well done sir!

maybe i'm just a natural crybaby or my eyesockets are too loose but i literally sobbed for good minutes when you told us about the middle phase. it's very lonely and frustrating, yes, and it's very tempting to just put down the pen and quit drawing alltogether but it is called a phase for a reason. meaning it would pass and you can get better of it by practice. and yesss that moment when everything clicks together and you can see you're getting better, that's such a satisfying feeling.
thank you very much for the advice(insight?) Mr. Teller. this video is such a balm to heart, i really feel so much less like a garbage x''D

"Where you do a drawing that makes other people just sit back and admire... beauty.. and appreciate their life a little bit more because of something you've created, it's totally worth all of the struggles you've been through"
Inspiring stuff right here - hearing you say this reminded me why I decided to start the artistic journey. Thank you for making this

Totttaaally my situation right now. My stuff isn't... BAD... but it's also not special. I still struggle with too many things too and it makes me curve down my inspiriation. So I end up drawing easing things and hope something good comes out of it. Again, I have barely any motivation for anytthing since I'm depressed, but I hope I can get out of it someday.

    • @jonesmartins
      @jonesmartins 10 лет назад +1

I share the same feeling. You have to know exactly why you are depressed. It also depends on your age, because you are building your character, thoughts and opinions on life, etc. If you get demotivated when drawing because you're not happy with the result which always happens to every artist, just practice more. Try different things such as different styles, grips on the pencil. Themes, papers, or just stay a while without drawing. That cleans up your mind a bit which helps you to get more focused over time. Look for "Proko", I think he is great at teaching how to draw, always useful. Good luck. :)

    • @dpcdpc11
      @dpcdpc11 10 лет назад +3

agree with Jones... try to find out the cause of you depression and then let your emotions fly through the pencil right onto the paper! drawing and making music got me through some rough times. and don't think too much about what others may say or about the technique.. just try to focus on you and the moment... catch the feeling in the moment and just... draw it!

This video is really helping me get through a tough time in drawing. I never really identified it before but I'm in that middle stage exactly like you're saying, where people go "oh cool" at my drawings but can't really offer any good advice. So I'm just going to keep chugging on and practicing! Great channel, keep it up!

Same here. I feel like only artists can give other artists feedback. People who aren't artists, they just say "oh that's nice." Or "yeah you're very talented. Good job. Keep it up." 😓😓 I only know what I know about art today because of other people who are artists that have been doing it for awhile.

Whenever someone shows me their drawings and they're bad, I feel really awkward, and i wish I could slip away quietly but quickly, not that my drawings are the greatest, I don't go around showing people.. lol, I try to hide them away like a deep dark secret, and whenever people want to see my sketchbook for whatever reason some of them say it's good, and I can't help but think to myself that these people just don't know what good art is, but it's probably because they're trying to be nice. I've recently been actively trying to get good at my art, so hopefully I'll be there one day.

I agree about how being a great artist in a room of budding artists isn't always a good thing, I feel like I'm not improving much at my art, I already know most of the stuff in my art elective. To add to that, I can't find any books that help, either. Most of the books I find tell you how to draw, not how to improve.

You're right, these golden moments when you realize what your mistake was in a drawing makes you feel so good.
It makes you feel like you just passed another big mountain to get better.
Because of you i started to carry my scetchbook around and scetch everything that looks interesting to me.
And once there was one older lady that i drew and she looked at my scribble and asked "Is that me?"
I was unbelievable happy that she recognized herself on my drawing that I ripped the scribble out of my scetchbook at gave it to her, we're both were happy. One good memory that I always like to remember.

Man, that middle artist thing hits so hard to home. :( I'm only just entering this phase but I can already start to feel the loneliness. I'm really dreading the next few years. D:
I enjoy calling my work shit and seeing the conformations from those around me, pushing me to not be shit, but I keep getting refuted and it's bothering me because slowly but surely fewer people are calling my work bland and crappy when I know I still have a long way to go.

*I want to make people happy when they see my art.*
      (Positive Psychology, sort of speak).
I found my passion for art when I watched VHS ending of Sleeping Beauty. Where the 'magic behind Disney' started, the traditional artists still created the backgrounds. One of which did a step-by-step of how he created the background for the forest scene. I thought, "I WANNA DO THAT!"
However, after I graduated high school I submitted my work to Disney and they regretfully informed me that they no longer take traditional artists (unless they are concept artists, but even then they wanted a digital artist background).
So now I don't really know what to do except teaching art. And your videos make me realize that I can do anything, (i actually have a small business with a fellow friend(s) that want me to be the back bone of their stories).

I've been looking at so many lectures over the course of about 6 months. I never really knew where I stood on that little phase meter, mainly because I don't show anybody my artwork and I never bothered to judge it myself. That includes friends, family and even my girlfriend. I mean, I used to show others when I was younger. But I was in that starting phase where my art would be horrendous and sub-amateur-looking. I find myself to be in that second phase where I'm good enough, but not at all great. Unfortunately, over the course of time I've sort of braked on drawing. Mainly because of demoralization due to my partner being a significantly better artist who's able to do photo-realism, as well as the style that I've longed to have. She was better than I am now when she was about eleven years old. And that hits pretty hard when you're trying to be an artist because you're older than somebody, but they can draw professionally and you're no place near that level yet. I've asked for her help, but every time I get demoralized she'd lose her patience and kind of just say, "You're stuck. I can't help you." I'd like to overcome the demoralization - so is there a way to? Or is it something I'll need to truck on through?

ah at last! Refreshing advice! I've been working on and off on my art most of my life, went to college for it even, but life side tracked me away from it. About five or so months ago I realized I was never drawing anymore and I was just super unhappy, so I got back to work. Been building up momentum and regular practice to the point now where I'm drawing everyday again, without fail. I'm really through "playing around" with my work, I want to take it to the next level. I think what Will is talking about halfway through the vid is mainly a compositional aspect of drawings. That the technical ability is there but the composition is boring. I think I'm a bit in that phase right now. Creating interesting dynamics in composition is a lot harder than you would think. But like Will and every other professional artist out there has said, the only way to get better is to keep at it and be patient. Will, thanks for the vid. As always, very inspirational. I work like hell on my drawings, I really am just learning how to draw anything really and I draw at least one thing every single day even if I don't keep it and I used to have a DA account where I put up the stuff i was really proud of....then it started getting torn into by other people. I don't mind people telling me its bad but....in today's society people seem to forget to give the constructive form of criticism.
I am not looking for a job as and artist I am a novelist but I find drawing helps me see my creations and putting it out there would help people maybe want to read my stuff...But I don't know why I bother anymore when people just seem to find it amusing to rip down your confidence.
You just stopped me from giving up ♥ Thanks Will

I think this is one of your best vids of this series yet, Will, imo at least. :D You definitely ARE one of those artists who can teach as well as draw, and you know how to be humble and get people interested in what you're saying. This vid also really helped me in a personal way. I'm 15, and I hope to become an animator someday bc I love to tell stories creatively. I've only started to really draw/work hard in the past year or so though, and sometimes I get frustrated with if my full-bodies don't look quite right, or my characters aren't interesting enough, etc, not to mention a lil' bit of flack from my family for wanting an art career. (I totally understand where they're coming from though. It's just that I know this is exactly what I want to do in life, to share a part of myself with my stories and make other people /feel/ with them too as much as I can.) But watching your vids and getting encouragement from peers really brightens my days and keeps that resolve going. So thank you so much. :) (Sorry for the huge 'life-story' thing, ahaha. ^^')

One other thing, you are also right about references, I spent practically the whole day downloading tutorials, and ebooks, etc..about drawing, and by the time I actually started drawing I was too tired and over-whelmed by the plethora of stuff that I probably won't even use. So now, I limit that time spent, and just draw. Only real way to learn AND be original at the same time.

Thank you for always uploading such great videos with wonderful tips and insight. I love how much closer you feel than a lot of the other artist online, you keep things so real and open. :)

I really loved the information that you gave. I started listening to this video at work and continued on my drive home. I feel like i've heard so many things from each category and mostly lately it's been no critique at all. I just don't know what to say, it's like you've said everything that I was thinking. I'm definitely subscribing and watching more of your videos. I guess for me, I like hearing that, yeah it's going to be tough but just keep working at it. Keep doing it and you'll get there. I in no way think I'm a great artist and I know that I need a lot more work. It's nice to know that when I say that, someone understands instead of thinking "oh you just think you're a bad artist. Stop being so negative." I'm acknowledging that I need more work and that I can be so much better. This is a great video and it brought me out of a crumby mood today. :)

This is very helpful. I have tried every way in the world around practicing. I hate to do stuff that I'm not naturally good at. I have been drafting so long I'm out of practice at drawing by hand. I don't like to see my bad work but it's the only way to get better. I'm grateful that people take time to help.

im glad i stumbled on to this vid, i really like your honesty because i feel as though you were talking to me as one of those who would gather alot of references and data but not putting in the mileage (even though im now putting in) and also i like what you said about the next new thing, i love alot of different art and anime styles but every time i try to learn from them i end up with something completely new and im very happy about that because i dont like copying someone else nor do i like stereotyping, because of that im becoming an even better artist and master story teller

I really love this video and it is true. I've been drawing since I can remember and just kept drawing, I learned new things from my middle school art teacher and he told me that I should go to a special art school where I'm from. He helped me with my portfolio to show the school. When it came time to show they didn't accept anything that I did. I was heart broken but I never stopped doing my artwork now I'm better than before and all of my friends ask me how did I learn and I always told them that I never stopped drawing.

I just started as an animation student and have only been drawing for about 5 years, im a big believer in learning from reference material but its what you can do and create after you have learned thats gonna decide your future in art. Your right when you say you can have a portfolio drawing every disney character perfectly but they dont care because they have seen it before, they want New and Original material because if your hired thats the kind of stuff their going to be using. Great video and advice will!

Thank you for this video Will. I am at the point where I am good but not great but I find seem to find anyone to give me any good advice because it's always "woah" and I can see and feel something is missing. I don't want to give up because this is honestly something I love but hearing you talk about this makes me think I really need to put way more work and try to socialize more with exploring other avenues in art. I want to have my own voice and you just hit the nail on the head and the reassurance I needed. Thank man. seriously.
